Extensive Spanish Wine list
Paella for Groups
spanish chorizo, shrimp, clams, chicken, calamari, saffron, short grain rice, capers, peas, carrots, onion
Bacon Wrapped Dates
bacon, dates, manchego cheese, pecans
arugula, goat cheese, shallots, mint, walnuts
Since the last time I was there, some changes, perhaps covid affecting. Wine selection is much higher priced than necessary for very good Spanish wines. Of the four tapas ordered only one was the quality of previous trips (approx 2 years ago). The others were pedestrian to subpar. in particular the seafood paella, and lamb chops (overdone and spartan) which are easy to make excellent. I like the place, I really hope it returns to its previous quality and adjusts its wine selection to reflect the extremely good values available in Spanish wines. I had it on my top 5 in the area 2 years ago.
Wonderful dining experience! Diverse range of flavors in most dishes. Food comes out super quick. Service was phenomenal.
Spouse’s 50th birthday. We informed them in advance. Food was brought out in a timely fashion. Service has improved greatly, however this time the food was lacking. We enjoy tapas and I bought my in-laws out to join us. The paella was greasy and lacked flavor. The skirt steak was over cooked. The patatas bravas were burned ( we ordered several Bc it is usually a fan favorite). The shrimp was tough, and the arugula salad was bland. The old tomato salad was much better. At the very minimum, I had hoped they would acknowledge our special occasion.
We’re probably going to skip Taberna’s in the future. It is not for celebrations or special occasions and quality of food has diminished greatly (from our experience) see my previous reviews.
Pretty uninspired food. Octopus was over cooked, arroz negra over salted, and mussels not fresh.
First, our server was very pleasant and helpful and was appropriately attentive to our needs. We appreciate that! The food, however, was very disappointing except for the albondigas, which were quite tasty and enjoyable. We had two seafood dishes (shrimp and octopus), both of which were over-cooked and, thus, rubbery. The wines by the glass were tasty, however. Two employees at the front of the restaurant, one of whom seated us when we arrived, spent most of the time we were in the restaurant staring at their computer screen as though they were on social media or the internet. Admittedly, the restaurant was not busy but this was not a good impression to leave with diners.
I doubt we will return to this restaurant.
Food was ok. Server did not pay much attention to us.
The ambience lacked energy and wasn’t lively at all, the food was just alright.
Food was delicious, service was very good. Two complaints- the outside entrance was unswept with leaves and other debris on the doorstep. Upon entering the music was loud, too loud to be able to converse without raised voices. The hostess, after a little persuasion, lowered the volume so we were able to stay and dine. The music was very pleasant and added to the ambiance.
Thanks! We had an amazing time. Dinner was served nice and slow.
Very interesting tapas (especially crab stuffed piquillo peppers) and other food choices. Wonderful and attentive service. A very delightful dinner.
This place has all the trappings of a great restaurant -- beautiful ambiance and décor, a smart menu, and food that is very well presented. The only problem: the food is tasteless. Mind you, I'm vegetarian, so maybe the meat dishes are better, but some of the vegetarian classics like tortilla española and patatas bravas were shockingly bland.
I was also disappointed that several items were out: the cheese plate, literally half of the vegetarian options, and a third of the wines by the glass.
Had a bottle of wine and tapas with family. Quiet scene to relax a little more!
Excellent! Every dish was delicious, we were a group of four and shared multiple plates. The wait staff was friendly and attentive.
Very good, flavorful, authentic tasting food. Variety of options. Little limited on Vegetarian, but sufficient. Service slowly paced, which is nice for tapas. Do not go if you're in a hurry. Very pleasant and knowledgeable wait staff.
Food great, cocktails not so much !
I really like the food here but the service was not commensurate with the price of the dining experience. Food orders were not spaced so we either had no food or were deluged with food. We felt rushed and wanted to actually enjoy our wine with our food and not have to guzzle or drinks or let the food get cold. Will definitely come back and hope service improves.....
Horrible food. Skirt stake was very cold, had to send it back, AND it was not even skirt stake. The shrimps were undercooked and once again, cold. The short ribs were not short ribs but a piece of meat with lots of fat in it. The fried calamari were toast overly crispy and burnt. About the only thing that was ok taste wise was the empanadas but $12 for 2 empanads....no thanks. I think it's way over priced for tapas and I'm spanish and know a thing or 2 about tapas specially coming from NY where there are a lot aunthentic Spaniard restaurants. Well, we tried it..... 1 and done!
Food was average at best, service was not the best either
Food is microwaved and gross. Totally disappointing. Won’t be going back
Lousy, casual service. Dishes were dull, and very bland. Portions were puny given the prices. Very disappointed
The food was excellent and a very nice variety. We really enjoyed the servers who assisted us with the food selection. It was clear that they knew the food and were open to helping make selections.
The food was so-so, just not particularly flavorful or tasty.
We had a sampling from the entire menu. Everything was perfection. The wine bar was enormous The empanadas were crispy. The grilled octopus was perfect. The dessert was bread pudding. Amazing. Will definitely go back.
Great way to have dinner with friends. Service was excellent , window set was great. Salmon was over cooked but the other small plates were really good especially the crab stuffed peppers. Have eaten here several times and always enjoyable.
Food was amazing as was the service
Highly recommend going
Food was horrible. Microwaved out of the kitchen. Will not be back.
My mom and I were looking for a fun place to try in Durham and so I made a reservation for this place at 5 pm last Saturday. I realized after making the reservation that it didn't open for 10 minutes, but since we were cold and hungry, we figured we would see if they could at least seat us early and give us a glass of water.
We walked up to the restaurant to see 3 workers standing around the host booth hanging out and laughing. We walked in and said hello only to be greeted with a curt "we open at 5." With a bad taste in our mouth, we went and sat on a park bench until 5 and figured that we would give the restaurant a chance still since it sounded good. Yes, the girl was rude and could have said to come back in 10 minutes in a nicer way or just sat us with menus and water.
Our actual server was fine and didn't have an attitude like the other girl thankfully, but the food was bland. The cheese plate had very little flavor, the red wine I got which was supposed to be "smooth" was so bad that I didn't even finish it (and I'm not a wine snob) and the lambchops had literally no flavor. The mussels were mediocre and in a weird red sauce and the patatas bravas tasted like they were in a spicy ketchup. The roasted brussels sprouts were bland as well. I've literally made better ones myself.
All in all, the food was not worth it and I wish we hadn't ordered all at once, so we would have known it wasn't good. I think these were the most overpriced and boring tapas I've had in my life.
Service good. Food tasty.
Wonderful experience. Food was excellent and so was the service.
Lots of space and great experience
The service was excellent. The staff as very attentive. I will be going back. This is my new spot
Great time! Much better to go with 4 people but 2 will work. Yes you will pay some money but the food is well worth it and will put a smile on your face. I recommend 4 people so that you can get to taste much more of the menu. Everyone should experience this place. People and ambiance are wonderful and being in downtown Durham means there is plenty to do before and after.
Didn’t ask anything although I mentioned a special occasion...
everything was too grilled when we were expecting something more testy
Initially, the hostess declined our service, stating the restaurant was “booked the rest of the night”. After about 20 minutes of trying to locate an alternative for food, I was able to view the open availability of the restaurant on open table... therefore the restaurant was, in fact, NOT completely booked. There were about three other parties dining and the waitress made a point to ask for my friend and I to pay our bill even though we were still eating/drinking. She also stated that we had to be making our way to leave the restaurant since they were closing soon. Mind you the other parties were still sitting comfortably and still dining. Very disappointing encounter seeing as how my initial experience at this restaurant was outstanding.
Absolutely love this restaurant! They have the best wings in NC and the paella is just amazing. Can't pass up the churros either.
The food was delicious and affordable. Nice ambiance. Good service.
Food was excellent. Great wings. Great service from Kelsey.
The food arrived at our table luke-warm and the servers were very pushy for us to leave because they were closing soon. I'm sure I'm like most guest at a restaurant, when you're spending $70 plus dollars on your meal, you want to relax and enjoy it not be pushed out the door.
Traveling through Durham and found this wonderful restaurant. Each of the tapas dishes we had were delicious. Wish we had a restaurant like this where we live!
