I love this place! I go there for Sunday brunch every time I’m in DC . The atmosphere is quaint and cozy and the food and service are great. Don’t miss the doughnuts!
Sitting by a fireplace having cocktails before dinner is the perfect way to start an evening on a cold winter's night. Service and food were great. Had a really fun time.
Reliably good food and service in a charming old building, convenient to Dupont. I like taking out-of-town guests here.
I have always been a great fan of the Tabard Inn. Several times I have actually stayed at the Inn while on trips to DC. The rooms are eclectic and no two rooms are the same. The whole ambiance of the place kind of reminds me of an Agatha Christie novel - a throw back to the early 20th Century, when life was simpler, people were well mannered, and decoration was designed to please the eye in an old fashioned, Art Deco comforting kind of a way. But this is supposed to be a restaurant review so I digress.
The food at the Tabard Inn restaurant is very good. Nothing is spectacular, but it is just very good. I have never had a bad meal at the place, but you will find nothing here that warrants celebrity chef level plaudits. It is kind of what you would expect from an Agatha Christie novel - consistent and well above average, comforting to the extreme, but not truly spectacular. If it is avant garde that you are looking for, go some other place. But if you want to eat a meal that your great-grandparents would have appreciated highly, this is your place. The service is also very good. I would not say it is excellent, and it can be a bit uneven sometimes, but it is really very good.
Next to the dining area, there is a small and perennially crowded bar. They make wonderful cocktails there, some that are quite unusual, but whenever I am at the Tabard Inn I usually just want to order a scotch (neat) or a Manhattan or an Old Fashioned, because that somehow just goes with the place and is probably what my great-grandparents would also have ordered if they were here in the 1920s or 1930s.
One of the best things about the Tabard Inn is the sitting room next to the bar area where people come to congregate, sit on overstuffed furniture that looks like it dates back to 1925 but remains very comfortable, sip on their scotches (neat) and Old Fashioneds, and carry on conversation with other folks. It is all so utterly .... civilized. I just love the place.
Always charming dining room in any season. Lunch menu was perfect for post museum outing. A Washington, DC standard.
Wonderful funky atmosphere. Brunch was delicious.
delicious, fun, friendly place; we were immediately seated even though we were early. Waiter was prompt and so kind. Food was so delicious, inventive and still comfort food., and even our leftovers have been so good! Can't wait to come back for an outside patio meal!
I have always enjoyed the Tabard Inn when we visit Washington, however this time it fell just a bit short. We like to be upstairs but apparently this was not available. The noise level downstairs is much too high. The service was excellent and our waitress was very accommodating, even making the requested substitute from our guest. The wines were perhaps overpriced, but guess this is just Washington.
This is one of my local favorites. Great ambience, great food, great value.
Wonderful food, service, diverse menu, good service
Great food. The inside of the restaurant is beautiful, and I love the ambiance. Service was very good on all my visits.
Great food and service.
Great food, slow service, and too noisy
The Tabard Inn continues to delight with its ambience and food and beverage offerings. The gin and tequila varieties were exceptional. The appetizers and entrees contain enough variety for vegetarians, seafood lovers, and meat enthusiasts. The servers are friendly and accommodating. Our server was a tall Asian woman who was helpful and friendly and she gave us space and time to enjoy our meal without hovering all the time. We appreciated her approach to waiting on our table.
Outstanding food and drinks. Dark, quiet, unique ambiance is perfect for a nice date night. Great service. We’ll be coming back for sure!
Food, ambience and price all very good. Server not friendly or attentive.
Great place to have drinks and dinner! Highly recommend!
Food was pre-made and awful. They just heat it up. So not worth the price.
Great ambience with the fireplace. Have been here twice and the food and service very good
We love the Tabard Inn. The food, service and overall vibe is just great for a special occasion dinner OR a casual get together.
Recommended by the concierge at the Mayflower. Excellent dinner.
The patio was lovely!
A smaller venue, almost intimate. Semi-clubby with a well-worn late 1800s lounge, fireplace, wood panel, stuffed furniture, Persian rugs, a casual bar upstairs and a narrow walk past the bar as you enter the more-updated dining room. Excellent, diverse menu that changes over the course of a year. Informal, but staffed like a 5-star. Noise can be an issue for some, but there is patio dining to escape that. Modest but thoughtfully-curated wine cellar. Not inexpensive dining, but you won't feel overcharged. Recommend the valet parking ($12 plus tip)
Lovely!! Go on Friday or Sunday and enjoy the live jazz after a nice dinner.
Excellent meal. Crowded and noisy.
Our fourth visit dining here over the last few years was excellent. Celebrating our wedding anniversary. Service was extra special with thoughtful complimentary dessert and after dinner drink which made the experience a delight. Will go back on next visit to DC.
Perfect experience even you just had brunch alone
Food was terrific (understand there is a new chef) and the service was very attentive and accommodating; had two birthdays in the group and they went out of their way to be welcoming, including complimentary limoncello for the group (which was not a big dessert crowd). Will come again!
Beautiful and unique atmosphere, but very overpriced. On top of that, the meals were small. Mins was delicious, but my wife did not like hers at all. We definitely enjoyed ourselves as ambiance is important to us, but we will not be returning as it was not worth the cost.
Lovely old world inn. Nice menu, competent service.
The Tabard Inn never disappoints. The food is always excellent, the service perfect and the ambiance great. It is one of my favorite restaurants in DC!
Overall, excellent. Noise level deafening however. Maybe Sou absorbent drapes? Dunno. Tough to abate, I know
A fun quirky spot, a buzz with lunch meetings and great conversations. Food is very good, and the spot is very unconventional, but worth a stop for sure! Don’t miss this unique and eclectic spot!
Brunch on a weekday was underwhelming. I had the Tabard sandwich and bread was greasy, bacon a little burned. More than $10 for a not-very-good breakfast sandwich. Coffee was terrible and that was my major source of unhappiness. Waiter was friendly. Room/hotel are a nice environment.
Food was well-prepared. Had halibut special which was good. Service was attentive without disturbing. Restaurant was a little too dark where we were seated so it was hard to see what we were eating even with a candle on the table. Complimentary digestive (OJ, vodka & sage) was an unexpected treat and appreciated!
Hadn't been to this DC institution in quite some time...with all the new restaurants. Was very much looking forward to it. We were disappointed in the food. My pancakes were completely burnt on the bottoms and my friend send his shrimp and grits back twice because they were not warm at all...room temperature. The atmosphere was wonderful of course but we were disappointed in the food.
Wonderful setting. Food is decent - the restaurant is quite loud.
We have been to Tabard Inn a few times over the past couple of years. Although the food was fine and our server was very good, the noise level was beyond painful. There were only 2 of us at a table for 2 and we could not hear each other. The first room we were shown to was horribly loud and the second was just as bad. We mentioned this to the server and she said she knew. I think the management has an obligation to ask very noisy groups to tone it down out of respect for and consideration of other diners. We ate and got out as fast as possible and won’t be going back.
