Mediterranean

Located on the trendy U Street Corridor, Tabaq Bistro features one of the unique rooftops along the East Coast.
Halfway retractable, fully enclosed glass rooftop lets the diners enjoy the Washington DC views year around.

Embracing the flavors of the Mediterranean from Morocco to Spain, Tabaq’s tapas style cuisine offers an exquisite blend of fine taste and elegant presentation. Tabaq features food served in small portions to encourage a sampling of many flavors and ingredients of the Eastern Mediterranean.

Small plates include a variety of vegetarian, meat, and seafood delicacies. Our talented chef prepares traditional Mediterranean specialties such as Manti, Dolma and Lamb Kofte alongside seafood delights such as stuffed mussels and fried calamari. Savory sauces enliven many of the dishes. Full sized entrées are offered as well, including lamb, beef, and stuffed chicken. We also do private events for any occassion.

If you are after a night with the girls, and obnoxiously loud screaming, this is the place for you. If you want authentic meze, you may need to look elsewhere. If you can brave the four flights of stairs to get to the roofdeck seating area, you will find a small, cramped, loud and busy restaurant that has seen its better days go by. The bar/seating area is easily 80% women and with that (and cute small stiff drinks) the volume goes up and you may not hear the person in front of you, especially ife runners and servers whiz by with meza that are likely cold. Do, however, try the lamb kabobs ($7). They are small, but full of flavor. Overall the location is the best thing about Tabaq. I wouldn't mind missing another year or two before I return.

I used to like eating at Tabaq, but I hadn't been there in a while and won't be back any time soon. My water glass came with a weird, sticky substance on it. I was served a cocktail on the rocks in a martini glass. The tuna tartar was gray. The stuffed dates were burnt (actually charred on one side). All of our dishes came out at the same time, which is fine I guess but a bit unusual for small plates. And after delivering our food, our waiter somehow seemed to forget that we were there, which must have been a challenge since we were only one of two tables.

I learned about Tabaq Bistro through web searches and was excited to find a place with a fireworks view on July 4 in Wash, DC, so much, that I agreed to the fix price of $75/person; was assured that we could see fireworks. Seated at a two-top up against the bar; however, were at the end of the bar by dumbwaiter and the sound of ever clanging dishes resonated all night. You could see the fireworks, if you were in 20% of people seated in the front of the restaurant. To top it off, a rude person decided to stand in front of us with his child on his shoulders. I was very disappointed in what happened and expressed this to the mgmt which did nothing but charge us $75/person. The food was good, but not worth $75/person for what we received.

Lets start of with the service. EXEMPLARY!!! Glass never got below half. Waiters came by just enough to ensure we were taken care of but not too much to wear we felt bothered. The food was a 3-course prix menu and the food was 3 out of 5 in my opinion. I will go back to try their regular menu items to see if there is anything else. The view was nice however I couldnt see all of the fireworks due to a building that is being constructed but I saw about 75% of it. All in all I would go again just without high expectations for the food.

The chilean sea bass was very good, not quite as good as some other restaurants, but very good nevertheless. The service was very slow and I'm not sure I'd really recommend it. The view of the 4th fireworks wasn't as good as I'd hoped.

I made a reservation for a night out on the town. Came all the way from Virginia and when I arrived with my reservation confirmation via Open Table they had given away my table and made no other accommodations for my party. They were preparing the space for a private party and could not honor my reservation. I then had to spend the next 2 hours searching for another location and waiting on a table. Why take the reservation if you cannot fulfill the agreement?! I refuse to ever come here again! The hostess was rude and had to find a waitress to help her try to resolve the issue. AWFUL SERVICE!

We were on a U Street DC historic walk on a hot summer afternoon when we dropped by for a late brunch at Tabaq. The climb to the roof top was tedious- but we loved what we saw there- the glass roof was canopied over with white canvas and we got warm filtered sunlight with the ac buzzing away. The food was delicious- really loved the mediterranean salad with much argula and feta cheese and the salmon tasted good too. Service was warm and friendly, the terrace views were nice, ambiance intimate and cheerful- quite a pleasant dining experience in all.

We went there for a late brunch on a Saturday. The space was way too hot, the 4-story walk up to the roof was long and not really worth the view, food was good but not anything to write home about. At 1:30 the place was weirdly empty, but got a few tables of big groups by the time we left at 2:30.

Tabaq has been a weekend brunch favorite for years. The menu is simple but pleasing. The food always seems to taste better than you expect. Just wear sensible shoes for the walk to the roof top. It's worth it though, the view is awesome. The staff are always friendly. Groups seems to do well also.

We got several small plates, all of them absolutely delicious. Service was friendly and speedy. What a great find!

This is a very casual place--in decor and food style. It's best visited on a warm day when they can open the windows...the alfresco with a neighbor hood only view is more about the fresh air than the view. Convenient to U street clubs. Not so convenient to hotels around the National Mall. Reasonable prices for reasonable food.

I picked this restaurant primarily for its proximitiy to the 9:30 club (about 6 blocks away) and secondarily for the menu. At 6:00 on a Monday the place was empty, but we had a nice dinner with an interesting view. the small plates that we ordered were all good, although the risotto was not worth ordering.

While the food was delicious (loved the chicken/waffles), the service is lacking. Be sure to make reservations for weekend brunch/lunch, even with reservations we had to wait because the line into the roof top restaurant was long and unorganized (granted, not much space and the line is really standing on the steps). But, once we were seated, it took some time before anyone came over to even ask us for drinks...luckily it was a lunch with a friend and we had catching up to do...so, if you have alot time and don't want to be interrupted by the servers, and enjoy good food this is a place for you. However, if you're in a rush, or expect utencils on the table, a cup of coffee within the first 5 minutes of sitting down maybe not.

We got the valentines day tasting menu, which on paper looked great. Crab cake(s), lobster bisque, sorbet, and a steak. The 1 crab cake I got was crunchy and awesome. The Lobster bisque on the other hand was the worst I ever tasted, as in, I took two bites and then pushed the bowl away, so did my date. The sorbet was alright, we were busy talking, didnt pay attention. My steak was room temp and i didnt get a steak knife. They were busy and my server was really cool so I didnt care. The view and the atmosphere ... 10. The view of the capitol building and Washington monument look great, so does the rest of the city. They play that relaxing, trendy, chill vibe techono music that all hip restaurants do. I recommend eating there at least once

Tabaq was a fun, funky place. The food was decent and it has an interesting ambiance. The only downside is all the stairs. It's probably a better place for the young and/or fit. If you have problems handling stairs, I don't know that it's worth climbing four flights of stairs for.

Also, they have 3.00 Mimosas they are not endless :(I would definitely check it out again I had steak and eggs and it came with a lot of food (make sure you tell them you want home fries if you do not want french fries with your steak I thought it was a little different)

I've walked by this place a million times and never noticed it, and I'm glad I did. Great for eating late at night, and the food was absolutely delicious and great for date night. The one complaint I do have is that the service was horrible. It took forever for the waiter to take our order, he was unfriendly, never checked up on us, and it took forever for the check to come. Luckily the food was all correct and came out quickly, otherwise I absolutely would've complained. The food is absolutely delicious though, so I would definitely go back for that reason.

Excellent restaurant - we were there during the height of the DC presidential inaugural weekend - the restaurant was filled to capacity and several groups waiting for tables. Our hostess noted we had a reservation and worked hard to get us seated as quickly as possible. The food was terrific and we did not wait long to be served - remarkable considering the restaurant was completely filled - every table was full. Maybe because of that we had to ask twice for a refill on coffee. Otherwise it was a terrific place and one we will return to enjoy again.

This place is a hidden gem - I can't wait to go back. Getting to the restaurant is a little confusing - finding the place is easy, but then you have to walk all the way up to the 4th floor and there isn't any signage once you're inside the building. Walking up those stairs is definitely worth it! You have an amazing view of the city as it's a glass enclosed space with views across U street and stretching back towards the National Mall. The food was delicious (since it's small plate style I would suggest going with friends and sharing) and the wait staff was just the right amount of attentive.

The food was passable, hitting ok on some and missing on others. The rooftop is quite nice though the furniture is looking worn and has the slightest feel that late night partying took place there the night before. Great coffee btw but the syrup and BBQ sauce served with the chicken and waffles not very good. Eggs and bacon good though and prices are appropriate.

The food was fantastic. The owner was very friendly, and it was great fun watching him flirt with women that came in for dinner or drinks (which he seemed to do a lot). Our waiter, however, was horrible, and asking another server when you needed something didn't seem to help either. Not sure if it was just their second string wait staff or what. I "recommend" this place only because the food was awesome, and you might have better luck with service than we did. If we went back to DC, I might give it a second chance, but not a third.

I was hoping for more outdoor view as it was advertised but the place was covered with window glasses and it didn't have that patio feel to is as expected.
