poor service and reheated ribs... I traveled a long way for this?
I won't return.
Not sure I am sold on this place. We used to go there before they changed owners and the food was good, but service was hit or miss. The last couple of times I have been here, the service was good, but my brisket has been lukewarm (as in temperature).
How is it a Smoke House restaurant doesn't incorporate their signature meats into the Brunch menu?
Food was not warm, came out in 1 minute, like it's sitting in the back from yesterday. Gross
Fun place for my kids 6th birthday. Service and food was just okay and it was expensive relative to what you get.
I would definitely recommend T-Rex to anyone who loves smoked meat. You can smell the smoker from across the street! I got half the smoked chicken with asparagus and mashed potatoes. My husband got the smoked brisket, mac and cheese with bacon and Caesar salad. The smoked meats were the highlight of the meal.
Had the spinach and beet salad which was very good. The brussel sprouts side dish is good but would be better if they didn't steam the sprouts. Probably should have pan fried and tossed them.
Service was painfully slow and we had to flag folks down to get refills on water or drinks.
We were seated promptly at a reserved table. Our lady server was excellent, helping us through the menu to order just the right amount and variety of items for the seven of us. Highly recommended are cornbread, Memphis baby back ribs (meaty!), Brussel sprouts, bacon Mac and cheese. The lean brisket was a bit dry- maybe the regular should have been ordered and BBQ sauces fine. Service was excellent and we had food to take home. While not up to Kansas City standards it's worth a trip from Marin. Only squabble is Gilman St. turnoff from 580- traffic nightmare!! We'll be back.
We made a brunch reservation for a group of 10 for my birthday. We were the first to arrive at the restaurant when it opened and were seated right away. The experience went downhill from there. Our waitress has a horrible attitude from the start, she made it seem like she was doing us a favor waiting on our table and I saw several eye rolls. She seemed inexperienced and I understand serving a large table can be daunting but it's part of your job in food service and customers shouldn't be able to tell you are overwhelmed or annoyed. After sitting for 10 minutes we still hadn't received our waters. i had to leave to table to ask to be given our water and drinks. I wasn't given my drink until close to the end of my meal which came out wrong. My husband's side dish was cold. I care too much about working people and sympathize too much with how it is to work a hard service job to not tip so I tipped the waitress above what her poor attitude and even worse service deserved. The food overall was not good. I cook better food at home. The fried chicken was burnt, ribs were dry, bread was stale. If it wasn't for the beautiful weather and the hike I had planned for the rest of the day this brunch could have seriously ruined my special day. I will never come back to this place. Poor service, mediocre (at best) food.
place is going to be under new management and it shows
Sides were good; popular with the kids = 4 teenagers. Since T.Rex is a BBQ joint, I was disappointed with the meat. It tended to be dry, not juicy. We ordered all the meats from smoker and seemed like they gave us meats that were sitting on the grill for longer than needed. That's why I wouldn't recommend it as a BBQ place. Service was spotty because we had to keep asking for stuff: no dishes & place settings when we arrived so had to ask for plates; had to ask for BBQ sauce; had to ask for more napkins. At one point I had to get up and go to another table to get silverware...not a great message since I was charged a tip in advance because our group was 9. Don't think I would recommend this place to foodies like myself. Finally, I was miffed about Open Table not allowing me to reserve a table for 7 PM that day. We were there from 6-8:30 PM and the whole upper floor was empty the whole time we were there. So, clearly there were tables/reservations available at 7 PM for our large group. Not going to make reservations thru Open Table anymore. This has happened to me more than once and I don't want to put my dining dollars thru Open Table reservations anymore....
I've been here several times and love it! Love the experience, the food is great and until my last visit the service had always been amazing too. Our service was awful, however when we finally stopped a manager he was quick to make it right. I highly recommend reservations to decrease your wait.
T-Rex was one of our favorite restaurants, but over the last several years has faded in quality.
We have gone back several times over the last year and each time with mixed results, our last visit however was definitely subpar. The Cheeseburger was served on a bun that quickly fell apart, the burger did not taste good, and at $15. was in our view overpriced. My wife said that her salmon sandwich had not enough salmon to fill most of the bun. We are writing this critical review because we hope that T-Rex will return to an excellent everyday dining experience. But for now we need to express our disappointment.
This was a horrible dining experience. The service was slow and inattentive. The food was mediocre at best. The "lean" brisket was extremely fatty. The coleslaw might have been stolen from KFC. We waited 20 minutes for the bill only to be told that the restaurant's computer system had crashed and that we needed to wait longer. After another 20 minutes we were allowed to leave after promising to mail a check once the restaurant could generate a bill. Two days later we received a bill (which we paid). There are many restaurants with way better BBQ and far better service. Don't go here!
Some dishes are really good. We love the deviled eggs, sautéed kale, and ALL the salads. However the breading on the fried oysters and fried chicken is much too heavy, and the pulled pork was kinda dry. Love the large screens for watching the ball games!
The wine and cocktails were great and everyone loved their meal. I had the crab cakes, my adult kids had the fried chicken. Best of all was the corn bread- smothered in honey butter. An amazing treat!
Watched most of the Warriors playoffs at T-Rex. Great bbq, loved the happy hour menu. Nice drinks, awesome service. I give T-Rex a thumbs up!
Great food, great drinks, great chairs what more could you want!!!
Good place for kids! Big menu with lots of options, for everyone. Recommend the fried chicken, pulled pork sandwich and garlic fries.
This just was an experience of a place all used up. And my dinner was disgusting. I thought the Fried Chicken at a high price would great and flavorful. Order came with 4 pieces of blackened fried chicken. I mean the crust was black (overcooked to the point of starting to burn.) But some of the meat was still juicy. Two hours later I was trying to get the taste of bitter burned crust out of my mouth. What a memory!
Didn't eat any of the food. Steak was horrible, no taste to potatoes . Didnt pay for meal, went somewhere else.
I had the ribs - they were overcooked and then covered with sauce to hide the fact.
Everything else was just fine. The potato salad, beans, and Caesar salad were all good.
Service was a bit erratic, especially since things weren't very busy.
This establishment makes good cocktails and the food is adequate. Most entrees are too big to finish so it's definitely two meals worth of food. In all honesty, I've had better BBQ, but there's isn't bad. My friend ordered her burger medium rare and it was delivered well-done making it dry and difficult to choke down.
Booked a table for brunch on Mother's Day, thinking we were going to get some good southern cooking. Instead, we found a mostly empty restaurant that should have been able to provide wonderful service and food. Yet, it took almost 10 minutes before a server came to our table to greet us and take a drink order... despite walking by our table a half dozen times. We ordered food and the food took almost 40 minutes to get to the table - again, the restaurant was not even half full. My order of biscuits and "beef brisket" gravy was awful. The biscuits were cold and the gravy seemed like it was made from a powder packet - there were no chunks of beef brisket, not even a sign of brisket in the luke warm white glaze. My wife's cornmeal pancakes were a disappointment, and the kids split a "banana battered french toast" that was anything but battered (it looked more like re-heated frozen french toast from a box). Even my coffee wasn't served hot. Truly a disappointment on Mother's Day. We live in the neighborhood, and will not be back for a second visit.
We tried T Rex for brunch, having enjoyed the BBQ there on many occasions. Reserved on Open Table, but the hosts could find no record of it. Putting diplomacy skills to work, the hosts rattled off names of other reserved parties, as if to suggest I'd forgotten my name when booking. Neither were they persuaded by the confirmation email I pulled up on my phone. I mentioned that, oddly enough, this reservation glitch happened once before but the hosts insisted they never EVER had a problem. In the end, they granted us seating in a restaurant that was more than half empty with no other parties waiting for a table.
Once seated, the waiter admitted in a hushed voice that T Rex has had problems with the Open Table reservations system. He asked us to report the problem to Open Table & copy them on the email. I think I would've been willing to help troubleshoot had the hosts made an effort to make us feel at all welcome, or had the food been better.
On to the food. The waiter recommended Crab Cakes Benedict with poached eggs served on a bed of spinach. Also ordered: Chicken Wings w/Waffles & Two Eggs any style. While the eggs in the Benedict order were nicely poached, the crab cakes were greasy on the outside and slimy inside. The presentation skimped on both hollandaise and spinach. This dish ordinarily comes with home fries & I asked to substitute whole wheat toast. What I got were pale, limp french fries. To the waiter's credit, he recognized the error and put in the toast order. A few minutes later, I was served white toast. Wheat toast was again requested and produced on the 3rd try. The chicken wings were good; the waffle woefully undercooked, doughy and limp. Brown Sugar Kitchen has nothing to fear from T Rex here . It's hard to go wrong with two eggs any style, especially when your 'style' is scrambled, so no point deduction on that part of the order, but you can get two eggs almost anywhere. Bottom line: T Rex is good for BBQ, but go elsewhere for brunch.
We went to T-Rex for brunch on Mother's Day and it was very good --- especially the cornmeal pancakes. Wait staff was very attentive.
Next time w'er going for dinner and the BBQ, which smelled delicious. And we're also looking forward to the housemade BBQ chips.
I think the sliders like the pulled pork slider should have some slaw on it and not just the bread and meat.
Meat was a little dry and sauce not spicy enough
Every time I go out order the brisket sometimes I come in the brisket is cut very thin but when it is thick it is delicious their food is very good they can work on their sides a little bit
Brisket was tough and dry
Baby back ribs were undercooked
Not a good meal at all
Loved the kale and the fries.
Wait staff attentive and very polite.
Great place to watch the Warriors play!!
We will be back!
Terribly disappointing food and awful service for our family and friends. Rude and unprofessional waitress and bus boy. Given there is a 18% service charge for parties of six or more they had no motivation to treat us well. Crabcakes, salads, and BBQ were sub-par and with a bill of $277 for 7 we expected much more. We will not return.
i had passed this interesting looking restaurant many times and thought i looked like a fun place to celebrate. the menu looked interesting and there was a trendy industrial look. however, the waitperson introduced herself by explaining how tired and out of it she was, so that if she forgot to bring the birthday dessert, we should remind her. we ordered a bottle of champagne, a full rack of ribs and some sides. i asked for water 3 times. when the salad came, it had not been dressed. it took 20 minutes. when the ribs came, they were dry and crisply overcooked. the 4 asparagus spears were tasty but meager. the waitperson was not around to order wine from, as we had only ordered a half bottle of champagne. we were told each time someone passed, how short staffed they were on that saturday night.we had to find her for the dessert and check as there was an event we were attending nearby. the pecan pie came after a long wait, served with 2 spoons. it was so dry it shattered when i finally got my spoon into this thing. overall, extremely extremely disappointing for a 65th celebration. next time we will go to E&J for ribs that will tenderly fall off the bone. feh.
As always, ribs were excellent and so were the side dishes-- AMAZING kale, brussel sprouts, and cornbread better than I remembered with honey & butter, which is irresistible to my kids. Felt almost too full for dessert, but we managed to do it. Did have to request additional hot sauce, though, because their "hot" was more like "mild."
My wife and I have been here several times, and we brought another couple here for their first visit. We arrived before 6pm, so Happy Hour was still going on. From the Happy Hour menu, we ordered the Chicken Wings, Pork Riblets, and the Pork Slider, all to share amongst the 4 of us. We were happy with the first two items, but the Pork Slider was a portion of just one, along with some delicious potato chips. I guess we should have asked. It would be nice to have an option for more Sliders on one order without ordering additional servings.
The highlight of the evening, we assured our friends, would be the "Burnt Ends" from the Dinner Menu, so all 4 of us ordered them as part of our respective 2-Way Meals. The waitress returned a few minutes later to inform us there were no Burnt Ends available - at all. At 6:30pm? Maybe it was because it was Easter Sunday... Needless to say, we were disappointed even though our substitute choices were good.
Service was very good, so the only real down note of this visit was the (lack of) Burnt Ends. We will be back, hopefully to satisfy that craving.
We've dined here before. The service was fantastic, servers were very friendly & efficient. Food is very good with a wide selection to choose from. great place to meet with friends & have a nice informal meal.
Food was good. Service was excellent. The only thing I didn't like was that they took it upon themselves to write in a 22% tip on the charge slip. Because of the great service, I probably would have given them a little bit more, but I just didn't like the idea of them adding the tip.
FYI, I used a Passport card which says they can add an 18% tip, but why 22%? Usually a restaurant would add the tip to the food receipt, not the charge slip, which I should fill out and sign. Oh well.
Like I said, the food is good. The nachos platter is huge and great for lunch. We'll give them another chance.
We have eaten many times at T-Rex. This was by far the best service we've ever had.
The focus is on southern BBQ that is great. However, service is indifferent, the food (meat) comes to the table pretty cold.
