The food is fresh, seasonal and delicious! And the service is friendly and knowledgeable.
This is definitely my go-to restaurant in Newton - even when I'm heading to Boston afterwards!

Our service was pitch-perfect for old friends getting together for the first time in years. Waitress was very responsive to special requests, thoughtful and sensitive. Noise level much better than our last visit. Food was 3.5 out of 5, but my out-of-town friends were very happy.

Another great evening at Sycamore. Graciously greeted and seated. Staff was attentive without being intrusive. Our questions answered about the menu. All in our party enjoyed their dinner choices.

First time trying this restaurant. Given how small-ish the menu is, I was a little concerned. The food was fantastic- very fresh and creative! I will definitely be going back!

Easily my favorite restaurant. It never disappoints. I order whatever sounds interesting and I’ve yet to have a bad meal there.

A wonderful Gem of a restaurant in the heart of Newton Center. Have you gone there many times and always been very happy with the food and service.

Two people. I like the fact that they have "snacks" in addition to appetizers. A big appetizer even shared can be too much for me. We loved the bluefish pate. We shared the lamb board which was great. I am not a wine snob but I thought the house red wine was quite good.

I was expecting so much more. Not only was it not exceptional, it didn’t even hit average. All of the food was bland, bland. The best part of the meal was the chorizo croquettes. Then the pea salad. Then the spaghetti, tasteless. Same with the garlic soup. Others though the chicken was fine. The fish cakes were ok, nothing special. The beignets were phenomenal. The wine list was not great. Felt the waitress pushed us into a much more expensive bottle of wine which totally did not deliver. She was not friendly at all. Disappointing over all.

Had been looking forward to our first visit for a while, having heard great things from friends. The food lived up to it's billing but the service was downright lousy. Despite making a reservation 30 days in advance, they sat us 30 minutes late (no doubt if we had been 30 minutes late our table on time, they would have given our table away!). It took the server about 15-20 minutes to take our drink order, then when the drinks came, they forgot one. She was AWOL for about another 10 minutes so we couldn't really ask them to correct the mistake. Then one of our main courses came out with an allergen (sesame seeds) for a guest who specifically requested no sesame seeds. It just went on and on. I've had better service at Denny's. I may give it one more try just to see if this was an off night, but certainly wouldn't rush back.

Having dined here many times since it opened, I have to say it's feeling more and more constrained over time. While the servers are excellent in describing the dishes down to each ingredient, it honestly appeared that even they lacked some enthusiasm for the dishes. Recommendations were not effusive when asked about dishes. The menu is so small, and in an effort to be unique and trendy...well fewer and fewer dishes work. The pea and lettuce salads were only fair, the fish cakes were a 'B' at best (we asked if they had a lot of bread crumbs and were told no, but they were a large % break crumbs and the lemon zest sauce was extremely bitter). The steak was reported to be good and the pasta with octopus was good. Three desert choices were not inspiring at all. And, we were kept waiting over 30 minutes for a reservation - the hostess did not want to 'push' 2 women who had been occupying a table for 3 1/2 hours but had no problem with leaving us out to dry. I mean, there wasn't even an offer to comp a drink or appetizer due to the long wait and we are regular recognized customers. Sadly, rather than the go-to this has been for us, it's now on a list of 'maybe's' depending on the menu that week. Along with a mediocre experience with Buttonwood, I think this series of restaurants is losing its luster. We're pulling for a rebound as it's been so nice to have great local options.

Outstanding food: beet citrus salad was perfection, octopus and pasta dish had perfectly cooked and tender octopus, butternut squash side was obviously cooked in several manners to have the ingredients come together so well, beef dish was good with terrific parsnips, circle chicken with mole was really tasty...and more. We have never been disappointed and feel exceptionally lucky to have this restaurant so close by. Buttonwood is on our list, but we don't think they can top this! Service was excellent too and our water glasses were never empty, no easy feat.

Great food and service.
Appetizers were great, such as citrus salad, blue fish pate and chicken chopped liver.
The beef board was amazing, different textures, flavors and creative tasty food. From sandwich, to skewer to stake. Beef was melting in your mouth.

I love this place for its food and cocktails and great wine . The menu changes and it’s always creative.
I used to live close by and went there often. The bar area is small but very nice.
Last time we really loved beef board for two - great dish !
Beet salad was delicious. Cecio e peppe with homemade pasta is excellent.

Service is the problem. The food is always excellent. But when the server forgets to put in the drink order for your table and you don't receive it until your entrees are done AND receive not even an apology, you realize that management must have hired family or just do not understand what good (not even excellent) service is. Our server saw dirty dishes on our table several times and simply walked away. I guess she thought it was someone else's problem, not hers. The managers (or whomever were the persons not dressed as servers) were the ones who picked up our dirty dishes and brought our drinks with the melted ice that had been obviously sitting at the bar for some time. That is preposterous to me. And no, a phony smile asking how's everything after your boss did your work for you does not make up for anything. I will always come back for the food. Just not as quickly because of the mediocre at best service.

We go to Sycamore because the food is excellent and warming to the soul, the service is consistent and has good attention to detail, and the atmosphere is comfortable (albeit a bit loud at times). We wish we had more chances to go there than time allows us!
