SY Kitchen Ratings and Reviews
PERHAPS WE CAUGHT THEM ON A BAD NIGHT . . . we were looking for an Italian restaurant and this restaurant came recommended by the server in a local wine bar. Long story short - the roast chicken was tasteless. The pasta w/ shortrib ragu was interesting and put togetjer well, but I've had better. The server was rude. The wine had turned. We ended up going to another restaurant for appys and dessert. I might give them another try . . . but none of my companions will.
Loud, uncomfortable, hectic environment, overpriced. No personalized attention. We called the restaurant earlier in the day and had to leave a message - their phone message said they would call back. They never did. I left a message that we were bringing a couple celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. They made no acknowledgment of this, seated us in the worst possible spot in the restaurant (until we spoke up and said that the table in a doorway was unacceptable). We were embarrassed beyond words to have brought guests to this restaurant.
The good: food was well executed and delicious(octopus, branzino, filet)
The bad: I ordered a Manhattan to start and ordered a Pinot to arrive with my app. My octopus app showed up 10min before my Manhattan and the wine was late too. I hate that.
You guys nailed the most important aspect though, the food was excellent. I'll certainly be back.
My husband and I celebrated our 46th anniversary by dining at SY Kitchen for the first time. Even though it was a Monday night, the restaurant was very lively. The grilled artichoke was delicious and we both enjoyed my pasta choice, which was wild mushroom pappardelle. Service, even though they were busy, was great. We will be back to try their old-fashioneds, which we hear are the best.
Really enjoyed the grilled artichoke here. I thought it was much better than the one we had at another local restaurant. The gnocchi with the sausage tomato sauce was delicious. The gnocchi was so light and tender. My husband had the lamb shank with creamy polenta. It was a very generous portion and roasted to perfection. I would highly recommend SY Kitchen to locals and vacationers.
My husband and I loved this restaurant. We had gone wine tasting during the day so opted for a cocktail instead...I had the valley girl which was fantastic and my hubby had their old fashioned which he said was the best he ever had. Our food was exceptional and we can't wait to come back. The tomatoes and mozzarella was so delicious...the tomatoes tasted like tomatoes are supposed to...incredible. Everything we had was just fabulous.
We have never been disappointed at SY Kitchen, the pea salad and wood fired pizzas never disappoint. The specials and pastas are always great,
The service is consistently excellent, whether sitting at the bar or in the dining room. and the bartenders deliver super craft cocktails while being knowledgeable about the menu.
Too loud but good food and service. We came on s Friday night at 8:15pm. There was a table of loud drunk women ata table near us in the inside dining area. That took away from our special occasion(birthday) experience. It was our first meal here based on open table recommendations. Food and service were good. Wish it had been quieter. We had to raise our voices substantially to be heard with our server and each other.
Stopped in for a late dinner. They had happily changed our earlier reservation as we were arriving in town later than we had asked expected. Great food. We sat outside and they had blankets and heaters. Was perfect as we usually prefer the quiet of outside. Service was excellent. Our waiter had his running shoes on! He was definitely overworked, but when he was at our table I never felt rushed. Again food was excellent. A bit on the pricey side. But, it does seem that artisan food is definitely trending to these price levels these days.
This is the second time I had tried to come to SY Kitchen. The first time was Labor Day weekend when they lost their A/C and it was 100+ degrees. They actually called all their reservations to let them know their A/C didn't work. It was extremely good of them to call everyone and I was impressed. This time I went with friends after wine tasting and it was fantastic. We sat outside at the low tables (which I didn't know when I booked but the low tables worked fine.
The cocktails were outstanding, as was the food. The food was very creative and flavorful. We were also impressed that the corkage fee was only $20...in wine country no less! I can't wait to go back!
Excellent time, enjoyed the atmosphere, arrived earlier than reservation time, but was seated without any problems. Server was prompt and courteous well informed of menu items and was pleasant. We would certainly return again whenever we are in the vicinity.
Always a great meal here. The salmon puttanesca was delicious. (Got it last time, too.)
Only negative (which a friend had warned me about) was that we were seated in the back room where there was a LOUD party of 10. The restaurant had 4 tables of 2 set up in the corners of that room. One couple of was seated in the noisy room and immediately asked to be reseated on the patio. They came back in due to the heat. Yet the noise was so bad that they left the room again. I wanted to leave, too, but didn’t want to be a complainer.
I gave fewer stars because of the noise. (One lady was extra loud. And no diners want to hear a group of people complaining and laughing about their kids and how they’re not raising the grandkids correctly. However, I do thInk it’s great for a group to enjoy an evening out together- just not at the expense of other diners. This is the restaurant’s fault. Not the group’s.
Back at our hotel, we saw another couple who had dined there, and they were disappointed in the noise as well. And my friend who warned me about the large groups left the restaurant when they found out they would be seated next to a big group. That happened to them before and they decided never again. (I won’t sit there again either. )
Suggestion SY Kitchen: DO NOT sit parties of 2 next to a big group in that back room. It lessens the fine dining experience. Fill the other tables first. And then let people know if they’ll be seated next to a large group where the noise bounces off the walls. Give them the option to make reservations elsewhere. Or offer a glass of wine or dessert to the diners stuck next to a large group.
Diners: request the front room. We enjoyed that last time. Or at least ask not to be in the back room if there’s a big group in there.
Excellent service by the way, even though you were a server short. But it was a annoying to hear our waiter basically having to shout to the group in order to be heard.
Was highly rated, but felt the food was just okay, with the exception of the octopus salad appetizer, which was light and fresh. Ordered the salmon and mushroom pasta as entrees. Both meals were served room temperature and the sauce of the pasta was gummy.
The server we had was actually very delightful and knowledgeable! Knew his wines. I would try it, but keep your expectations medium.
Food was excellent. Fresh and tasty. Service from wait and bus staff Very unattentive. After meal finished we sat 10-15 minutes and finally asked hostess to help out and she cleared dishes. Waiters disappeared after meal service?! Finally they showed up with the bill. Never offered desert or coffee. Kinda strange. Wait staff needs better awareness /training. We ate there this past Saturday and started about 2:15.
SY kitchen is a little unassuming gem with a vibrant energy, tucked away in a quiet town. The food is good, the chatter is loud, and the service was great.
We made reservations ahead of time, and arrived a little early but we're accommodated quickly. The seating is a little cramped, not the worst but enough that the server had to lean over to get to the corner table next to us. This place specializes in craft cocktails and a custom Manhattan (the server got my order wrong but it's just to try so I didn't mind, and it was still decently good). She got a valley girl, and liked it. Her gnocchi was pretty good, and my roast duck special was also decently good - not duck confit tender but still very flavorful.
Overall, if you want a fun date night with good food, this is your spot.
One of the best meals I have ever had. The Burrata appetizer was great and big enough to share. The wild mushroom (home made) pappardelle pasta was cooked to perfection. The Mediterranean branzino, the evening's special, was served whole, topped with yellow and red tomatoes, black olives, and beets. Every bite was flavorful and moist. Watch out for bones though! Desert was a delicious homemade vanilla panna cotta. I would have the same thing next visit! Pricey, especially with added cost of drinks, but worth it.
Make sure you sit in the adjacent room where the ceiling is lit with pretty lights, where there is comfortable cushioned bench seating, and the noise level is less.
Love SY Kitchen. I have had three tremendous meals here with friends. Last meal was not as great. Not sure why, as I had ordered things I had previously ordered. When a restaurant is super busy, execution is a challenge. When I gave my feedback to my server- ie: undercooked peas in pasta dish and uncaramalized bananas in dessert dish, he couldn't have been more responsive. SY would have remade these dishes for me.
SY has a creative and delicious menu that our entire family adores. Over all, I adore this restaurant!
Nice bistro with tasty pizza and pasta entries. Roasted Globe artichoke delightful. Rustic atmosphere with one room having an open fire kitchen. Nice for cool nights. Wine list interesting but stick to Italian wines as local CA wines are priced for the expense account crowd.
Great ambiance but spectacular cuisine.
My wife and I stopped in for dinner and chose the evenings specials, braised lamb and halibut.
Both were high quality and well prepared.
Good wine and cocktail list as well.
We will be back next time we are in Santa Ynez.
