Swiss Chef Ratings and Reviews
The restaurant was over booked due to two for one special, even though we had a reservation we had to wait for half an hour. Then we waited through 4 baskets of bread before our waitress took our order, by then they had run out of many of the menu items. The food was good but next time I would not wait that long and it wasn't worth the special prices!!
Typical of the area, it's hard to know what an interesting place this is by simply driving past. The décor is festive and distinctly Swiss red and white. The chef himself is a veteran of fine dining establishments and the food reflects this. The menu includes items which are rarely found in the vicinity. The environment is friendly and relaxed, yet the serving staff is quite professional. Don't miss the chef playing the accordion!
The servers here were so accommodating, even with our 3 kids. The food was delicious and menu was very unique. I think the menu was slightly on the pricey side, but the quality was very good. The tap beer was delicious. I loved the boiled eisbein and the fondue for two was divine.
We were very impressed with the Swiss Chef and Chef Huegli. The food was very good not quite as sour as my wife would like being used to German food. But it was preparred well. Just wish there was a few options for kids but they were accommodating. Enjoyed it immensely and the Italian food was spot on.
Exceptional! Chef Uli split his time between the kitchen and greeting his customers. I had my family with us. All of us were from Germany but had lived here for many years. One of my Aunts was visiting from Germany and had a wonderful time. Chef Uli and his staff sang Happy birthday to my wife Carol in English and German and the cake was out of this world. My aunt visits once a year and said afterwards, "I would like to come here again." We will. My uncle Wolfgang said that Chefs in Europe greet their customers as a show of respect, and he loved Chef Uli's continuation of old world tradition. Congratulations Chef!
We have been coming to The Swiss Chef long ago when it was at a different location and name of The Matterhorn Chef. Uli and Judy are the BEST when it comes to personal service. And Uli is a chef like no other...his cuisine is most excellent and represents all the best of Switzerland. The entertainment is SO much fun and perfect for families and any night when you want great food and a good time to really lift your spirits. Recommended beyond compare and our #1 restaurant for special occasions.
My overall review indicates 'Good', however I have been to Swiss Chef numerous times in the past, and those reviews were always Outstanding. Normally the owner/award winning chef works in the kitchen and occasionally steps out to greet guests and sing Happy Birthday. Then he returns to the kitchen to work his magic. This past Friday I took a group of 10 people to share an experience that I had been raving about. We made reservations and were seated at a table perhaps large enough for 8, so we were very crowded. Service was prompt and attentive. It seems that they have increased their staffing, which was noticeable and welcomed. When the waitress took our orders, I noticed the Chef, Ulei, was out in the dining room singing. He continued to sing song after song, until our dinners were brought out. In other words, he never prepared or even supervised the preparation our or meals. The quality of the food suffered from its usual taste. The pasta was very undercooked, the sauce had no flavor, and side dishes were missing. I came here for the cooking by the owner, certainly not to hear his singing ALL NIGHT LONG. This was a very disappointing evening for my guests and myself. Although other reviewers recommend the Lazy Susan, I disagree and suggest a salad instead. Nothing special about a few small bowls of beans and cold vegetables, and some Chopped Liver.
We were in the mood for cheesy food and we "discovered" this old restaurant. At the beginning we were impressed by the staff friendliness and kindness. Later the owner and chef came to greet us personally and he showed a box full of white asparagus. Then, while we were waiting for our food, we were offered a complimentary asparagus soup which was delicious. The rest of the food, including dessert, was very good. A special mention to Rico, the waiter, who provided an excellent service. Definitely, we'll go back.
The Swiss are great because they can call upon so many other styles of food to keep them happy. At the restaurant they have German, French, Italian items. It was all just so good. It's hearty fare as well, with good sized portions. I was not hungry when I left, and in fact had some great leftovers. Definitely would go back again.
The food was a bit pricey but the portions were generous. We all had good meals. Having white asparagus dishes on the menu was a reason why we went there for dinner. The live music and singing Chef are a nice touch, if you like this sort of thing. We were there on Mother’s Day and there was a special selection of meals. We will come back on a “normal” day to try some of the other menu items.
I must have passed by this restaurant so many times without giving it a second look. My family wanted to try some of food that we tasted on our trips to Europe and a friend suggested this place. We definitely did not expect the lively entertainment that was actively participated by the staff and diners. It seemed like everyone celebarated all the birthdays that night and we sang along and clapped our hands and had as much fun as the celebrants and their families. The food was wonderful! The roasted pork shank was beyond delicious, better than the ones we had in Germany and Austria. Our server, Anna, was just great.
Ueli is an authentic Swiss Chef with quite the experienced background.
our food was excellent, and the biggest surprise was the seasonal,
imported white asparagus that is so popular in Europe.
The Chef was in the dining room quite often engaging his customers, making recommendations and following up after service.
Don't let the outside fool you or stop you from entering......go in and enjoy a great meal!
Too bad he is not in our neighborgood.

This Swiss Chef knows what he's doing. The food is legit European with ample portions of whatever you order. We ordered the appetizer platter for two and although we were a party of four, the chef came over and asked if we'd had enough or wanted more of anything. So rare these days.
Most of the entrees came with several vegetable sides and a potato, rice or spaetzle, all of which were delicious even if some were colder than I would have liked. I have no doubt that this kitchen would do anything to correct that small issue but I was so enjoying my duck special that I didn't want to part with it even for a few minutes.
You will probably hear the chef come out with his accordion to play Happy Birthday to several guests: we did! This could be a bit corny, but it felt incredibly charming and Old World in a good way. This was not our first visit and won't be our last.
The ambience was so inviting as you walked in. Lighting, Music and seating arrangement.
Food was excellent. We had 3 bottles of wine. Perfect. The desert OMG. My friends were
visiting from New Jersey and just loved loved the "Swiss Chef" Like being in a restaurant
from Europe in another era. I love it.
Swiss Chef is a great gem of a restaurant in the Valley! If you are in the mood for yummy fondue and swiss specialities, look no further. Great service, wonderful alpine specialties and a festive atmosphere lend to a lovely dining experience. Our server Monique was fantastic! We were in last week with our grandparents and 2 kids and she was attentive and spot-on. Chef Euli is a welcoming host! Thanks for a great evening!
My parents were in town and we wanted to take them to a place that had German food. Was a great experience, service was excellent and food was good too! Will definitely go back. Loved that the chef came out of the kitchen to make sure his patrons were happy.
We've been here many, many times, for special occasions and at times when we just couldn't stay away - the food, atmosphere and service are always THE BEST! When Chef Ueli sings along with Fritz on the accordion, the entire place lights up! many of the dinner meals simply can't be found elsewhere - our favorites include clam soup and bunderfleisch appetizers;, roasted pork shank, wiener schnitzel, linguine and clams, veal cordon bleu, and anything else they recommend! Go, relax and sing along, even if you don't understand the songs in French, Italian, German, etc.
I've eaten here many times, I tried it for the first time in 2006 before a trip to Zurich to see what Swiss/German food would be like. The food is amazing! I've had the Sauerbraten, the Rouladen, the Wurstplate and the Eisbein and all are very good. My husband usually eats a schnitzel and I've tried his, but honestly after you eat a very good dish here one is compelled to eat that one again and again. :-) It was my husband's birthday, so he wanted to come here, we had expected to book a party of 6 or so, but the email entitled "good german food and beer" had a bigger pull than I had expected and there were 13 of us! When we arrived a table for 13 was ready and waiting, our guests arrived 2 by 2 and I think the last one arrived 15 minutes late, but we had already ordered german beer and bavarian pretzels, so the party had already started. The service was so attentive you would think we were a party of 2, our server Jackie attended to our every need, like we were members of her family. Everyone loved their meal and commented on what a great party it was. Live music, beer, song, good German food. What more could you want?
You won't find another Restaurant in Los Angeles County with as authentic Swiss cuisine. All that work at the Swiss Chef whether at the bar or table service are all so accommodating and so pleasant with all requests. Judy ,Uli's wife, is so friendly, you always feel like you are having dinner with friends or family. It's a great place to bring friends, especially friends who have traveled and want to experience a bit of the Ole country.
It is very clear that the Chef Uli enjoys everything about his restaurant, the special personalized attention he gives to all his customers is beyond compare but what is beyond even this is the special attention he gives to the cuisine on his varied Menu. If you have been to Europe especially Switzerland you can attest to the authenticity of all the cuisine. The servings are more than generous.
The atmosphere along with the music and the occasional song Uli will sing
in various languages, it's all a bit like going back in time or at the very least like going back to
Switzerland. Hope you enjoy the Swiss Chef as much as we did. Bill Martin
I have been to the Swiss Chef twice, once with a Swiss group and once on a romantic Valentines Day supper. This is about as Swiss as you are going to get in Southern California. The food was great, the wine list appears good (I am not an adequate wine connoisseur), they have Swiss beer and I am told the music is quite authentic (perhaps not a compliment).
This is a great find in the Valley. The food is good, especially the red cabbage. I'm not a cabbage fan per se, but this was really good. Thwy have a really good menu which has a combination of german cuisine, swiss and italian. The enyertainment is a swiss/german guy playing the accordion and singing, nice touch and hes super friendly to the customers. I would definately go back again.
My wife and I were the first to arrive for dinner. Greeted cordially and given a choice of seating. Wait staff was very attentive, initially. We ordered an appetizer, Chaas Spatzli (Cheese Spatzles), which was quite bland. Website menu says $12, but we were charged $16. The entrees followed appropriately. I tried the "Berner Platte" (pork and sausages) and my wife had the "Rouladen" (braised beef). Website says $24 and $22, respectively. We were charged $28 each. There were components of each of our plates that were very good, and some that simply lacked flavor. With the Berner Platte, the sauerkraut was very mild and did not provide any flavor punch to any of the pork components of the dish. The mustards served with the dish, however, were excellent. I mixed and matched, creating different flavor profiles to try and get the most out of everything on the plate. The pork chop was one of the best I have ever had. Potatoes were overcooked, almost mush. All in all, a 50/50 on the Berner Platte. The Rouladen featured a braised, thinly sliced beef with a sweet and sour "jus" of sorts. The waiter brought us a sample of the sauce to taste first. It was very good on the side, but did not pair as well with the beef. The beef carried a flavor that stood on its own, without need for a sauce. It was very good on its own, and took a downturn with the sauce. More of the bland spatzli with it. Veggies were fine. Service was great until the entrees came out. Despite wait staff walking all around us while we were eating, not once did anyone ask how the meal was. On the whole, it was different, but not what I was expecting for the money. Beautiful interior.
Honestly, when the chef himself comes out wearing a beret and playing an accordian, you think you're on vacation either in some weird Alpine resort or or a European cruise! Either way: WINNAH!
Warm and quirky with fantastic food and beer (1 liter STEINS!). A can't miss night of food fun!
