Yikes! This place has taken a turn for the worse, unfortunately. We used to love Swiss Chalet, but we were there last night and were very disappointed. Service was average, but the food was the real problem. Have you ever cooked frozen fish? You know that odd texture and watery taste... well that's what I got with the $38.50 Chilean Sea Bass. The bass was over salted and the side dish was bland and flavorless. The Lamb T-Bone had so much gristle and fat that my son couldn't finish it. He's had Lamb at a restaurant in the Springs, which was much less money and much better. My wife had the filet mignon which was good, though the potato side dish was not. Desserts were below average. Advice from the server on all accounts was worthless. Nice atmosphere, partly because it was quiet due to being mostly vacant on a Friday evening (never a good sign). We probably won't eat there again.
It took over two hours from seating to being served our dinner. No explanation, apologies, or consideration. The staff acted as if they ignored the issue it would just go away. Several other tables were seated after us and were served, paid, and gone long before we got our food. There are numerous fine eateries in Colorado Springs in the same price range, not worth the extra 40 minute drive for the service. Cordon bleu was a huge disappointment.
Swiss Chalet is exemplary in most ways. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. When the green chili soup turned out to be too spicy for my mother, the chef prepared a delicious mushroom soup for her that was not on the menu. The food is very, very tasty. My only complaint is that my mother, who walks with a walker, must enter the restaurant via the back door, forcing her to pass the kitchen and the bathrooms first. Not exactly the first things you want to encounter when entering a restaurant. This flaw is totally out of character with an otherwise top-flight restaurant full of class.
We've been eating at this restaurant on our annual vacation visit to the rockies for at least ten years, always a great meal. Atmosphere is cozy, with a regular menu and specials, but always on a chalkboard. Cheese fondue is great, beef tournedos and any of the fish entrees are superb.
While on vacation in Colorado, my wife and I had issues finding a good place to eat within the popular tourist areas around Manitou Springs. Most establishments serve bar food, Mexican (had on a previous night), or pizza. Just outside of Manitou Springs is the Swiss Chalet Restaurant in Woodland Park - by far our best culinary experience of our trip through the mountain towns. I had the Chilean Sea Bass while my wife had the Beef Tournados. Both were excellently prepared. This place also has a great wine list and patio seating. While the prices are a little high, they are still quite reasonable when considering the other nearby inferior options. Too bad I don't live close enough to become a regular.
This was a special dinner to reward our friends for a favor done at a most needed time. You and your staff performed admirably and the ocassion was indeed memorable. The chioppino special that was on the menu was a real departure for you guys and turned out to be incredibly tasty. The steaks were were perfectly done as usual! Our servers never bothered to tell us their names so will have to refer to them as the taller girl and shorter girl. That taller girl was friendly although didn't see her much.. our issues are with the shorter server... we were there for our 35th wedding anniversary and I was so looking forward to dinner at the Swiss Chalel. Was never asked if it was our first time or why we were there ( strange as it is advertised as a special occasion restaurant) ..apparent from her demeanor she couldn't care less! No drinks list was offered I had to ask and then only a wine list.. menu was on the blackboard (read choice of soup (didn't know flavor) or salad and brought to table .. a nice touch but didn't reveal if there was a starch/vegetable to go would ith main course and when I asked she replied with agitation, mashed potatoes and asparagus! That was it no other choices. Food was so so, although apple pie was delicious. As we finished desert she placed the very expensive check on the table with no offer of coffee etc and exited as quickly as possible. While the restaurant looks lovely that's where it ended for us. We felt completely cheated out of a nice experience for our 35th anniversary ! Hope the owners read this review. June 4th 2017
The host ignored us, guess because we came in jeans instead being dressed up.
Dinner rolls were fresh, but not warm.
Had escargots as appetizer which were very good, but the toast was burned.
Jaegerschnitzel was tasty, but spaetzle were warmed up and not fresh.
Cordon bleu was tasty, did not come with homemade spaetzle but with spaetzle out of a box
Service was a bit slow noting that there were never more than ten tables in use. Servers were very attentive. Slowness appeared to be due to the kitchen.
The pricing for a lunch was a bit high. Ranging from $13 to $24. There was a very well balanced menu and the dining room was exceptionally clean.
I had the Cobb salad which was one of the best I have ever had. My wife had the mushroom soup and chicken salad sandwich. The toast was a bit overdone with the darkest sides turned into the center of the sandwich to hid the burned faces.
The Swiss Chalet is a very lovely building and has fun character, but the dining experience ruined any chance of my family going back. We arrived at 7pm for our reservation and didn't start to receive any food until 40 minutes into our stay. We ordered the cheese fondue as an appetizer and my family found it barely edible due to the strong bitter taste of cheap wine used in the cheese. I wasn't able to eat any appetizers myself due to a dairy allergy, but my child refused to eat it and just snacked on the bread. They did offer a carrot soup that evening that I was told was vegan, but was also unable to eat it because after ordering the soup the chef couldn't remember if butter was used to saute the vegetables that were in the soup and couldn't guarantee there wasn't any dairy in it. For a place with fine dining made to order food it is unacceptable not to know what you have put in it. (Also, it is not a vegan dish if there is butter in it!) So I then ordered a salad with my meal instead of the soup, and it was tasty, but I didn't receive it until an hour and 20 minutes after out arrival. Due to my allergy the chef did agree to make something for me not on the menu because he couldn't guarantee the other items on the menu didn't have dairy in them. I did appreciate this gesture, but again the meal took a turn for the worse when we didn't receive our main courses until 8:50pm which was one hour and fifty minutes into our stay(keeping in mind the Swiss Chalet closes at 9PM). I wanted to love this place, but the food is so so and the service was a disappointment. We had high hopes for your restaurant, since we drive past it once a week, but are unable to recommend it due to the experience.
Cornish hen was over cooked and dry and rice was over spiced. No substitution for vegetable so it was just left off. I barley ate anything. Way over priced. Steak should be about $25 per plate even at high end especially when serving size of the mashed pot and asparagus' where small and Cornish hen more like $20 especially since I didn't get the vegetable. You can buy 2 hens for $8 in the store. Would have preferred an actual menu that showed what came with a meal instead of an obnoxious black board being brought to the table and then having to ask the server. One server was very attentive the other very slow but was nice. Will not be back.
