Swig Ratings and Reviews
We had a few friends in town and picked Swig for it's excellent 3rd ward location, but really hadn't been there in a long time after they dropped some of our favorite dishes (seared ahi tuna and beef skewers small plates). We were happy that we tried them again. The food and the service (Calvin) was excellent! We shared 6-7 small plates (crab cakes, short ribs, snap peas to name a few), all of which were excellent as was the salted caramel dessert. We'll be back.
We were sat in the very back of the restaurant where the lighting was very poor and right next to the restrooms, the first thing we noticed was how uncomfortably warm it was and continued to fan ourselves with our menus while our waiting to be greeted by our server. It took over 10 mins for us to be greeted by Kalvin (who told us it’s spelt with a K) and when he took our drink order I was the only one who ordered wine and it took almost another 10 mins to get the pinot noir that I ordered and a few more minutes after that before he took our initial food order. We ordered 3 small plates to share as an appetizer and those took a very long time to arrive. My entree arrived to the table about 4-5 mins after my friends entrees arrived and I also ordered a second glass of wine, this time a rosé to enjoy with my salmon entree. Unfortunately the server didn’t deliver that until I was 2 bites away from finishing my entree.
Food was very good!! A++ actually!
Kalvin however just seemed distracted and too rushed. Timing and execution we’re very poor in my opinion. Despite not delivering food/drinks timely, Kalvin was very charismatic and always smiling when at the table.
My biggest complaint was how uncomfortable it was to be seated at the back of the restaurant with poor overhead lighting and it being so warm that sweat beaded on my forehead while I was trying to enjoy the visit.
This is my second time visiting Swig and I’m 50/50 on whether I’d come back.
My Girlfriend and I came for her Birthday. Neither of us had been before but it came highly recommended by friends, and we absolutely loved it. It was a prefect romantic evening. The ambience was on point. The food was delicious and our waitress was very attentive and helpful. We will definitely be back.
Swig is our favorite restaurant in Milwaukee. While we really enjoy many others, Swig has nailed 5/5 on service, ambiance, and most importantly, the food . . . on every single visit. Their signature small plates, salads and entrees with seafood really set them apart.
On the outside it looks to be a very nice place for a dinner date. When it came down to the food, it ended up being pretty meh. Nothing spectacular about the food, definitely a disconnect between the preimum pricing and the quality of the the food on the table. Of the 4 small plates we ordered only one was really rave worthy. The others were intended to be twists on the standard small plate fare you find, but the execution of each fell short. No distinct curry flavor in the chicken curry won ton, the smoked salmon stack was marginal at best. The brie was ok, but ok is the best you can call it.
Delicious salads, excellent coffee, solid service, desserts to die for. But...I’d like at least one smaller dessert option: two sugar cookies w one scoop of lemon or lime or raspberry sorbet. This would balance the entree and allow the diner a bit of sweet without feeling overfed.
We came for a pre-theater dinner, and it was wonderful. The chicken wrapped around cheese was perfectly cooked and had a fine delicate flavor. The salmon was bolder, but delicious. the service was outstanding: attentive without being pushy. We had time enough for a shared chocolate dessert that was rich (neither of us could have eaten it alone) and of a tantalizing texture.
The restaurant was clearly built with no expense spared. The Ambiance was phenomenal, all the decorations down to the lightbulbs creates a wonderful atmosphere; we especially enjoyed the authentic fireplace build into the wall near the entrance. The food was pretty good despite scarce menu, but then again, it’s clear that this is a place meant for drinks, which in our experience left us underwhelmed. The drinks ordered themselves were decent drinks, however we waited at least 10 minutes for two simple drinks which seemed ridiculous. Our server, while pleasant, showed a deficit in attentive care, as water glasses weren’t refilled and there was a noticeable lack of care it seemed towards our group.
I hadn't been to Swig in at least two years and was very disappointed. I will preface my comments by saying that I dined with 3 other people. They said their dishes were "good," although nobody raved about them. Each couple split a salad. Again, nothing to rave about, but no complaints. I ordered the Wonton Wrapped Chicken Curry and it was so dry and tasteless (not even a hint of "curry") that I should have sent it back. However, our young waitress was doing a fine job and the restaurant was busy on a Saturday night, so I chose not to make a big deal about it. Sadly, I would not return to dine at Swig.
Our group of 4 enjoyed drinks and food at Swig before a Skylight Theatre performance. The pork tenderloin was juicy and flavorful, salmon with spicy pebre sauce cooked perfectly, and the scallop salad was visually appealing as well as expertly prepared. The ala carte brussel sprouts side dish needed more carmelization. Sweet potato creme brulee and salted caramel chocolate cake were perfect for sharing. Our server was attentive and efficient. A great experience!
