Sutro's at the Cliff House Ratings and Reviews
Dinner was nice and food good but entrees overpriced. Really enjoyed the view and scenery but the evening was spoiledwjdn we returned to our car parked right outside the front door and found it broken into. Window smashed and bag taken. Apparently it's a VERY common occurrence at this restaurant location. They need to hire security or install cameras or other theft deterrent devices. I won't return again and can't re ommemd to others unless they take an Uber or get dropped off.
While the view and food is still good at Sutro's, the place looks "tired" and the staff, at times, carries on their own private conversations. When you utilize their rest rooms you notice that they are a mess. This is apparent in the inside of the doors to each. The inside of the doors need repainting or at least some touch-up around the handle area.
This is a very good restaurant to bring out of town guests. It has a rich history, is situated on a cliff above Ocean Beach, boasts a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean before nightfall, and on clear moonlit nights and it has excellent food. Parking can be a challenge.
The service was not my favorite and if you have a service dog I definitely don’t recommend it as they have all these special rules that make you feel uncomfortable. Food is good but not spectacular, the view is great and the restaurant ambiance is good specially with the jazz group.
Our meals were delicious and service was great, good cocktails and wines, nice option of half-bottles which is great if you’ve already had a cocktail!
My biggest issue is the plates were not heated so my fish got cold way too quickly ...
Also this is probably unrelated, but we were in the gift shop right after we arrived and they booted us out. I couldn’t even buy the postcards I’d picked up! Quite rude.
I️ was excited to go here but the server was not good myself and my friend both felt the bus’s boy and they guy coming around with the bread and water would have been a better server than we had. He was nice but wasn’t very attentive to us. Both hostess at the door and down stairs did not greet on arrival. The food came out very fast and although the tables weren’t full it seemed a bit quick. The food was over priced I️ would have like it to be more special. I️ choose this place because I️ had gone here 8 years ago and I️ had such a good experience, now not as great. I️ wish I️ didn’t pay that much for what I️ got. As a manager of customer service, I️ did not feel like it was a great experience for the amount we spent and I️ didn’t make the birthday feel as special as I️ thought it would. The buss boy was the best worker there.
My husband and I dined here to celebrate our one year wedding anniversary. He made sure to call in advance to request a table along the window in order to enjoy the sunset, however, when we arrived they sat us at a table in the very corner overlooking just the observation deck below with no view of the sunset whatsoever. Although not what we wanted, we were both willing to overcome the inconvenience and enjoy our evening. We tried our best to salvage the experience but the astonishingly poor service was enough to convince us that there would be no point to even attempt ordering after dinner drinks or dessert as we had originally planned. Our waiter had a terrible attitude towards us from the moment we sat down, hurried past our table whilst avoiding eye contact several times when we were obviously trying to get his attention to order, and had the audacity to stand for long periods of time at the neighboring table making small talk about the various tides he had seen throughout the day and generally be very sociable with everyone except us. The food was decent albeit understandably overpriced for the view, but the service was so devastatingly disappointing that we will not be returning.
I've been to the Bistro upstairs many times that serves breakfast and actually has a part of the old beach house original masterpiece in it. This experience at Sutro was quite different and their portion of the building is re-built to keep the look and feel of the original bathhouse, but id new materials. The views are phenomenal no matter where you sit. However, next time I want the window!
Had brunch at Sutro's. Booked for the place a week in advance. The customer service was outstanding. Although the in-store waiting time for seating is still considerably long, the reception led us to our seat and helped our kid to sit down. Overall experience was very nice. The day we went there was with good visibility, warm atmosphere.
Two things to consider:
1. Brunch options are limited, lunch is much better, with a much higher price;
2. Parking is extremely limited.
From time to time, I've forgotten how much I like and appreciate Sutro's. These days, I am not forgetting. The views are unsurpassed. Food and drinks are excellent, and service is very good. For my money and overall, it's the best waterfront restaurant in this great City.
We came to Sutro’s at The Cliff House for lunch with my daughter, who was visiting from NYC for the weekend. We loved it. Beautiful restaurant, gorgeous scenery/views, great service, wonderful food and drink. I can’t wait to come back again - it was really an occasion to remember.
We showed up early for our reservation and were seated promptly. Since we arrived in the evening, we were unable to experience the spectacular view everyone is talking about. We ate rather fast as we had to hit the road. Came out outside to find out our vehicle was broken into and stuff stolen. Later realized the entire parking lot was covered in broken glass so it is definitely a daily occurrence at this location. Valet didn’t care. Management was unenthusiastic to help, police did nothing and did not show up. Likely, since we ate quickly, only minor items were stolen and seems like the thieves did not have enough time to clean us out completely. Once we came out, there was a tinted BMW outside with two mid-20s individuals sitting in it and staring at us. We had to drive for another 2k miles back home with a garbage bag in place of our window with my kid in the back. No security cameras anywhere even though any ordinary story, such as CVS, would have surveillance cameras around their store(s)—I guess Cliff House makes money as it is and does not care much for well-being of its customers. Food was overpriced and nothing special. Not bad, but nothing worth mentioning. If you decided to visit this place, do not drive (especially with out of state plates) or at least leave your belongings elsewhere.
Everything great. We live out of state and come here every time we visit. BEWARE we parked out front and slightly down the hill and had our car window broken and some things stolen fromr inside the car. Not sure we'd come here again after dark. Would surely come during daylight hours tho.
The oysters served very poorly, not even on ice cubes.
The champagne was old, not cold enough and had no bobbles when served.
Overall not a fantastic experience as the location.
I love the view and sunset view but not the food and service.
Used to be great year a god or so...
Firstly, let me say that as someone who has lived in the area for nearly 45 years...the view simply can not fail to impress me. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for Sutro's. In the reservation I noted that we were celebrating a Special Occasion. It was not acknowledged. We each ordered the Half-Dozen Oysters on the Half-Shell. The waitperson threw one order on the table... The oysters were literally thrown into a bowl with a stringy strand of seaweed placed haphazardly beneath. I called him back as he rushed away. I informed him that we had placed two orders and asked him to take the first one back. I also asked him to place the oysters on a bed of crushed ice and to return both orders together... when they were ready....He brought them back in moments. Still thrown in the bowl, but with the benefit of 6 ice cubes that were whirling and spinning in the bowl like pinballs. Pathetic...and I'm convinced that the bonito essence & bottarga infused champagne mignonette..... was not.
We then proceeded to the Anchor Steam Beer Braised Mussels with Harissa. I don't believe there was even the smallest amount of Harissa in my dish...and the onions were cooked, but they certainly were not carmelized by any means. The Mussels were remarkably moist and tender., and quiet tasty themselves. The Braising Sauce was mounted with a very large quantity of butter making it a bit unctuous...Finally, the Mussels were swimming in far too much of that same sauce. It had become a Sauce Dish with a few Mussels on the side....Speaking of Mussels.... Five of mine were unopened. That's almost half. (?) No one checked? What's going on back there in the kitchen guys?
Sutro's is in an absolutely incredible location on the Pacific Ocean. The views are outstanding...The menu is ambitious, but they have real difficulties bringing it all together. Especially, for a San Francisco restaurant. If this restaurant were downtown, without the view...they'd be in big trouble...But Hey..Go for the View!
It’s difficult to rate this restaurant since it’s really just ordinary. We ordered the salmon, the shrimp and scallops and the crab louie and found the first two very good. $30 for a very plain crab louie (which was the cost of the others as well) seemed high even considering the historic location and view. If you must, for nostalgia reasons, go to Sutro’s, order a drink and appetizers. Unfortunately, we found the restrooms old and not clean enough.
