Sutro's at the Cliff House Ratings and Reviews
The rooms are configured so all tables have a good view of the ocean. The rock formations and swooping birds are delightful. The food was quite innovative and nicely seasoned and presented. After the reviews I had read it was a pleasant surprise. The overall ambience and service were just right for a quiet lunch.
The food was wonderful. The wait staff left much to be desired. Largely ignored most of the night besides the bread and water fillers who were friendly and excellent. Took a long time for us to get our order in and once we were finished with our meal we waited at least 20-30 mins to get our check.
They have the view to die for especially on a clear day. So it doesn't really matter what the food is like if you're with good friends or a loved one. We had good crab cakes & huevos rancheros. All good but not breaking any new ground. Nice wait staff, well trained. For brunch, it's perfect, not complex. What real estate on the edge of the world.
Had beautiful view of the ocean in a quiet setting where my friend and I could talk without noise like at other restaurants. The server was very polite and noticed the sun was bothering my friend and, without being asked or told, lowered, the window shade enough so the view could be enjoyed, but the sun wasn't hitting our eyes. Beautifully presented food and delicious, too. We could have had a bit more bread, but the person walking around with the bread might have gotten too busy to notice we wanted more. And they did not rush us to leave when my friend and I wanted to linger over dessert and catch up - much appreciated. Great place, food and ambiance. I can see why people wait in long likes to dine at the Cliff House.
Although the food and ambiance where goood we found that one of the windows to our car were smashed in when we went to depart after an otherwise lovely meal. Because of this we can not recommend this as a place to dine. This is because the restaurant is actually aware of this based on the signs that were posted on your way out, but they did not provide any apparent security to address the problem.
We love the Cliff House however we found the service to be lacking (seemed down a busser) and they did not seem prepared for the short staff as we kept having to ask for things such as water, bread or a knife. We also found the homeless that were milling around near the cars disturbing. The lure however of the food and the views made up for this saddening experience! Be sure to order the NY steak and always have one of their amazing desserts!
When the weather is nice on Ocean Beach this is a great place for brunch. The views are certainly a known selling point. We ordered Crab Louis salad and were impressed with the quality of the crab and the fact the dressing wasn't the standard stock thousand island, but a lighter dressing that we enjoyed very much. Our two children were with us and the service was friendly, personal and efficient.
Our kids thought it very special we could go even though we've lived in the area for years!
Dinner was nice and food good but entrees overpriced. Really enjoyed the view and scenery but the evening was spoiledwjdn we returned to our car parked right outside the front door and found it broken into. Window smashed and bag taken. Apparently it's a VERY common occurrence at this restaurant location. They need to hire security or install cameras or other theft deterrent devices. I won't return again and can't re ommemd to others unless they take an Uber or get dropped off.
While the view and food is still good at Sutro's, the place looks "tired" and the staff, at times, carries on their own private conversations. When you utilize their rest rooms you notice that they are a mess. This is apparent in the inside of the doors to each. The inside of the doors need repainting or at least some touch-up around the handle area.
This is a very good restaurant to bring out of town guests. It has a rich history, is situated on a cliff above Ocean Beach, boasts a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean before nightfall, and on clear moonlit nights and it has excellent food. Parking can be a challenge.
