Sushi Zushi - Downtown Ratings and Reviews
We ordered a big “delicato”sushi roll ($13.00) and the nigiri sushi sampler ($14.00). Both were very good and the price was especially reasonable. Decor wasn’t anything to write home about but the the price and engaging wait staff made for a pleasant dinner.
The restaurant itself has good food, only reason I would recommend, I went on a weekend and it wasn't packed, so that was good. Outside of that the service wasn't the best, nothing extra was offered (sauces), and it being out first time, we were pretty lost as far as the menu goes... waitress didn't seem to care, wasn't helpful. Seemed rushed.
Sushi was excellent and would listen to your waiter (ours was Donovan) - they know what they're talking about! Arrived around 6pm which was prime for getting some great rolls at half price as well as the cold, unfiltered saki - delicious! Would definitely recommend the Red Moon roll - multiple flavors that come at you in a layered format!
Convenient location off the riverwalk but unobtrusive signage is hard to spot.
Saturday lunch was not nearly as packed as expected. Host was not very welcoming. Waitress was kind, patient and accommodating.
Food was perfect mix of authentic Japanese and modern cuisine.
Price was just right for four drinks, two appetizers, four mains and two premium rolls ($100).
Ambiance was a bit lacking... Could have been any cafe/bistro.
Overall, enjoyable meal but any other Sushi Zushi location would have been just as good if not better.
Not what I was expecting at all. It was too casual for the occasion. I have been in another Sushi Zushis and they are really nice but not this one. Also, the service was bad, the waiter was kind of rude. Not what you would expect from Sushi Zushi. I'm not coming back there.
My 12 year old daughter and I were visiting from out of town and read great reviews about Sushi Zushi. We were not disappointed. The restaurant was very busy the night we went but they made accommodations for almost every party that came through the door. The food was amazing and my daughter loved that they had "fancy" non-alcoholic drinks for her. I would highly recommend making a reservation through Open Table as it's a small restaurant. Wait staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu (and understood what a 12 year old may or may not like in her sushi). The rolls with strawberry and kiwi sauce sounded odd to me but it was one of the best rolls we ordered. Highly recommend!! Overall it was a great experience and if we are ever back in San Antonio, we will definitely visit again.
Had two rolls. One was ok but a little soggy and flavorless and the other was made with tuna coated in pepper. The pepper was overpowering and could not be scraped off. The was no other discernible flavor and I couldn't eat more than a couple of pieces. Huge menu and perhaps other items were better.
I must admit that I don't usually write reviews - but Sushi Zushi really impressed me. I don't think I have ever seen such a wide and varied sushi menu with such unique combinations. I had been traveling for work with a colleague. We ended up picking 6 sushi rolls to split and they were all spectacular. I can't even remember which 6 I ordered because I looked at so many combinations. I actually had to use a pen and paper to prioritize what I wanted when I was in the restaurant so I could place my order.
I would highly recommend Sushi Zushi to anyone that wants to eat sushi in Downtown San Antonio
My wife and I have eaten at dozens of sushi places and were very surprised by how excellent Sushi Zushi is. The decor is very plain, which is o.k., because the prices were very reasonable. The quality of the sushi was excellent as was the udon soup. The service was excellent and very attentive. They have a good wine list and extensive saki list.
What is very surprising was the very extensive menu. I don't recall a sushi restaurant with several full pages of choices. It was remarkable, as was the dinner experience. I will definitely be returning.
We went because my kids wanted sushi and this popped up in downtown area at the start of Riverwalk. IDK why I thought San Antonio might have good sushi, but I was hoping for at least decent. The good first - service was pleasant and the menu was long with lots of choices. Next all the bad - the rice was not very good. Any sushi chef will tell you the rice is the most important and carefully guarded part of making sushi. But this was soggy and mushy. The fish tasted like it was just taken out of the refrigerator (perhaps it was). The sashimi was oddly cut very thick (it was an extra $2 to cut it thin), and the octopus had an unnatural frozen crunch and smell. If you know good sushi, then please go elsewhere.
It is right at the beginning (or end) of the Riverwalk. Lots more choices to eat there.
Sushi Zushi is apparently going through a menu change, but haven't updated their website or menu yet. My husband and I saved up for a nice meal to celebrate out first anniversary. We specifically chose Sushi Zushi for the sukiyaki. We were informed after ordering apps that the sukiyaki hasn't been available for at least 9 months. We ate and enjoyed our apps, but decided to go else where for the meal since we were in the mood for beef, not fish.
This visit was our third visit over the last two years. We love the food and look forward to eating at Sushi Zushi when we are in San Antonio.
Be prepared to wait. When we arrived around 8:15pm the restaurant was less than half full and remained that way until we left. Despite this it took about 15-20 minutes until we had our drinks and ordered out food. We did not get our food until 9:27pm. A long wait that almost spoiled our experience.
Visiting San Antonio for a conference, we went in search of something different after several nights of Texas fare. Fish was fresh, rolls were both standard and unique, and the service was friendly and fast. We had a great meal and plan to go back the last night of our trip. Great place!
The restaurant itself was nice. Our server was pleasant and got our order right. The sushi was just not up to par with what I'm used to. It was mediocre and lacked the 'fresh' taste of sushi. It wasn't that the fish was bad, it just wasn't great. I would not go back here again.
I've eaten at a few Sushi Zushi restaurants in San Antonio and other cities. I had never been to the San Antonio downtown location and we know the Sushi Zushi brand to be consistent in atmosphere and food. We had a craving for sushi so it made sense to start a night out on the town with a brand that we were familiar with. Sadly this location falls out of step with the brand. It is not the fault of those running this restaurant as the staff was this spot's saving grace. While it has a decent downtown location, from the outside, it reminds of a downtown convenient store; the atmosphere is hole-in-the-wall meets strip mall and the sushi, while not bad, was not consistent with what we usually get from this brand. Downtown San Antonio is a thriving hotspot of tourism, food and nightlife. Sushi Zushi needs to step up its San Antonio downtown location.
