Sushi Shiono Ratings and Reviews
Hmmh, this is a tough one: how'd you rate a restaurant where you don't get served any food? Where the waiting staff tries hard to avoid eye contact so they don't need to take your order? Where your 'Excuse me' with a little wave makes them turn their backs to you? And where you watch them take orders at other tables that had arrived a lot later? I guess you can't...
Look, I get it: busy evening with lots of parties that stayed longer than anticipated. Friends coming over that we like to welcome and hug and look after first. And staff worn out by a long and stressful holiday season... Fair enough - just tell me, I'm a grown-up and understand. Heck, you could even tell me 'sorry, but we are so busy we just can't handle your reservation tonight.' I can handle it. Just don't deliberately ignore me as if I wasn't there.
The skinny: reservation for 2 at 7:30pm. Got there at 7:28 and being told that a table would be ready in 10 minutes. Got seated at 7:40pm, got menus and placed a drink order for 2 brewskies. Beer and water arrived shortly thereafter. From 7:45pm until 8:30pm tried unsuccessfully to place an order for food while watching other parties being seated and their orders being taken and served. Got up at 8:30pm, left beer money on the table and went for burgers 3 doors over.
The cold Kirin was delicious, though.
As for the rating OT requires you to rate all 5 categories. Can't comment on the food because we never got any - ignore the 1-star for food as there is no n/a. And the value for the beer was exactly as one would expect.
Restaurants in Japan specialize. Only outside the country are Japanese restaurants expected to serve, and be good at, multiple kinds of dishes. This is an unrealistic expectation. Go with local sushi here. The local varieties of fish are fresh and competently prepared. Everything else is okay.
This restaurant did not live up to the hype! The ambiance was okay. The food was generally of a poor quality for sushi. The chefs seemed to be very serious about their work but the quality of the ingredients was not there. Although the scallops were good, nothing else that I tried there was worth buying even if the prices were much lower. I would guess that this restaurant just does a lot of one-time business with tourists.
Try some place else!
I love Sushi Shiono. If I ever want authentic Japanese cuisine I always go here. Reminds me of Japan and fun fact the sushi chefs are from Japan so you know you're getting the real thing! Staff is always friendly and food is always on point and great service.
My favorite Japanese Restaurant in the Kona area.
The food was mediocre. The salad was good. Our party wasn’t looking for sushi but for well prepared cooked Japanese food. There was no fresh caught fish available unless we wanted sushi. I wanted soba noodle soup with tofu skins & vegetables and was told there were no vegetables available only green onions. Then when the platters of chicken teriyaki were served they had nice vegetables on the dish. The butter fish was all skin & really greasy. Maybe just a good place for sushi.
Initially it wasn't a great experience due to my booking my reservation through open table yet we waited at least 15 minutes for our table, on top of that it is very crowded and loud in that restaurant, my boyfriend loved his food it was amazing just the service initially wasn't great we were thinking that we had booked our reservation and get seated immediately but that was not the case so that was pretty upsetting, a reservation is a reserved table...
There was a mix up with our reservation(said we were a no show earlier although we arrived 5 minutes early for our 7:30 reservation. Any way we sat at the sushi bar and had a great meal of mixed sushi and some tempura and miso soup. My wife is a veg head and she had plenty of options.
Have you ever been to a highly recommended restaurant when the service was so poor it completely eliminated any chance of enjoyment? Welcome to Sushi Shiono. In fact, the beyond-terrible service became THE subject of our conversation with our friends. The drinks took 20+ minutes to arrive and were all wrong, the server continually had this horrified expression as she mumbled something about the bartender not showing up and problems in the kitchen and a large party in the other room. Many times food was brought to our table that we had not ordered. Very long delays for any service. This went on and on. Yea sure the food, when it finally arrived, was fine but at that point who cared? Worse, there was no effort to apologize or make things right. Comp a round of drinks ? No. Try this special dessert on the house? No. The only good news was the substantial savings on the gratuity!!
Overall it was quite disappointing! I was visiting Big Island and looking for a good and authentic sushi place. This place was recommended by a local person and... it was actually horrible. Soba was not cold enough and too salty, sushi smelled so fishy, rice was so dried, and price was unbelievably high!! We felt we were robbed. Oh, did I mention that service was terrible too? We were invisible to servers. I do NOT recommend this place!
Some of the best sushi on the island. High quality as well as variety of fish. Much of the fish is sourced locally whenever possible. We found this gem about 2 years ago and it has grown in popularity since then as reservations are definitely required during the dinner hour.
We have been many times, and this place never disappoints. If you get one of the boats for two, be sure there are four of you...all good. Freshest fish in both sushi and sashimi. Tasty starters, too. Good place to have a conversation. Very attentive servers. Sushi bar looks like it too would be a treat.
Been coming here for years and it is always good. A great selection of unique rolls and Japanese cuisine accompanied by very well done traditional Japanese sushi like their Himachi Nigiri that was so fresh and tender it just melts in your mouth like butter.
Family friendly or great for a date, the location on Alii Drive allows for a walk along the ocean after dinner and a selection of bars and nightclubs nearby for an after dinner drink.
If you have not been go. But I recommend a reservation because they do get busy and you will have to wait for a table.
Two thumbs up - for sure.
