I never have given a restaurant a one star but the service I received was appalling. My guest and I were seated at the sushi bar directly in front of the sensei. He completely and totally ignored us, he served the Japanese couple to our right, and immediately served the Japanese couple to our left who sat down 10 minutes after us, but he didn't even acknowledge us. He even filled re-orders for the others pushing our order aside each time. It was so obvious and blatant that the hostess who seated walked over and told the chef. It was not until she went over a second time (without us asking) and me finally calling him out that he started out order. I could not say whether their food was good because at this point I just wanted to eat and leave. While the sensei gave use 3 pieces of nigiri comped, the meal and evening were ruined. The hostess apologized over and over and agreed that we were being intentionally ignore so she gave us a discount. I was highly insulted by the sensei and will warn people away from here. And, no, we weren't loud, rude, obnoxious or disruptive; we were two white guy tourists (actually I am kama'aina) dressed as anyone else
UPDATE: I was contacted by the restaurant the following with an unconditional apology; no excuses. I will commend a business which takes the step to apologize. The apology appears heartfelt, and I accepted their apology. I will go back another time and see what transpires
We had a great meal here, sushi and rolls were delish and exactly what we were looking for... a nice, casual night out.
over priced for the quality of sushi. Big city prices for small city sushi.
The service here was excellent and the food very flavorful and well presented.
Overall, a wonderful experience.
I really wanted to like this place. But the service was terrible because it was understaffed. Even with a reservation, it took 10 minutes to seat us and another 10 for a server to check in. The wait staff was hustling and it is not their fault, the place was understaffed. The sushi was ok.
We were given a warm greeting even though it was very busy. When we said we had a reservation, we were told the computer wasn’t working and so we had to wait. The hostess informed us that 2 other tables who made reservations that didn’t work in the computer were also waiting as well as one other who didn’t have a reservation. The wait was only around 10 minutes and we were seated right away. Had chefs sashimi, Hawaiian volcano roll, appetizer tempura, spicy tuna roll, and pickled radish roll. All good. Spicy tuna was really good. Chef sashimi has jalapeño and my wife didn’t care for that. It was busy and service was good once seated but felt like they were short one server. Only real issue was the reservation system.
Too many flies and not great food
We ordered the Sushi boat for two, the descriptions on the menu stated 9 pieces of sashimi of chef's choices. By the times the food arrived, we only get 5 pieces. We have to asked the servers about the rest of the sashimi. The service is very slow.
Over all the sashimi and sushi is very fresh and tasty. Very pricy but on par with other restaurants in the area.
Food is very good , fresh , the only complaint is they charge $1 per cup of green tea, that is a bit pricey! Who would just have a cup of tea ONLY for the whole dinner ?? Usually the restaurant charge per person and they gave a tea pot yo refill .
When in Kona, this is THE sushi bar to hit. Great sake selection. Great sushi! Attentive service.
We elected to sit outside and it was extremely pleasant. Great service.
Best sushi we have had in Hawaii. Really fresh and beautifully prepared and presented.
Visiting Kona, our VRBO owner suggested and she is a chef. We loved this place! Service was a bit slow so dont be in a huge hurry. Worth the wait.
The food and service were great. A favorite place to dine in Kailua-Kona. I highly recommend it!
Excellent food and service like always. We love The royal boat .
Good, very helpful service , good sake selection & a good value
OISHI !!!!! Good food, good service n good overall. Love the House salad n furikake chicken is the bomb. OpenTable reservations is a must to eat at Sushi Shiono 👍
Table was not available .
The food is always great. Always fresh with some creative choices on the menu with reasonable pricing. We always make a point to eat here especially when we have visitors. Sometimes the service is a little slow due to short staff but always friendly. The only other drawback is the noise level is too high sometimes if you are looking for a quiet romantic evening. There are outdoor tables that are less noisy but the view isn't great. I would still recommend sitting inside.
Made a reservation through open table. Arrived on time. Waited 20 minutes to be seated. Waited another 15 minutes to be serviced. But food was great.
The best sushi in Kona! extensive menu satisfying every palate. Service is always excellent, food is fresh and your meal is served timely. I’ll miss this restaurant when I go home
Best Japanese restaurant in Kona!
Excellent sushi and sashimi. Some interesting rolls
Restaurant doesn’t honor reservations!!! Don’t book just go! Food is great but they can not handle busy times
Decent. Hreat service
Hmmh, this is a tough one: how'd you rate a restaurant where you don't get served any food? Where the waiting staff tries hard to avoid eye contact so they don't need to take your order? Where your 'Excuse me' with a little wave makes them turn their backs to you? And where you watch them take orders at other tables that had arrived a lot later? I guess you can't...
Look, I get it: busy evening with lots of parties that stayed longer than anticipated. Friends coming over that we like to welcome and hug and look after first. And staff worn out by a long and stressful holiday season... Fair enough - just tell me, I'm a grown-up and understand. Heck, you could even tell me 'sorry, but we are so busy we just can't handle your reservation tonight.' I can handle it. Just don't deliberately ignore me as if I wasn't there.
The skinny: reservation for 2 at 7:30pm. Got there at 7:28 and being told that a table would be ready in 10 minutes. Got seated at 7:40pm, got menus and placed a drink order for 2 brewskies. Beer and water arrived shortly thereafter. From 7:45pm until 8:30pm tried unsuccessfully to place an order for food while watching other parties being seated and their orders being taken and served. Got up at 8:30pm, left beer money on the table and went for burgers 3 doors over.
The cold Kirin was delicious, though.
As for the rating OT requires you to rate all 5 categories. Can't comment on the food because we never got any - ignore the 1-star for food as there is no n/a. And the value for the beer was exactly as one would expect.
Restaurants in Japan specialize. Only outside the country are Japanese restaurants expected to serve, and be good at, multiple kinds of dishes. This is an unrealistic expectation. Go with local sushi here. The local varieties of fish are fresh and competently prepared. Everything else is okay.
This restaurant did not live up to the hype! The ambiance was okay. The food was generally of a poor quality for sushi. The chefs seemed to be very serious about their work but the quality of the ingredients was not there. Although the scallops were good, nothing else that I tried there was worth buying even if the prices were much lower. I would guess that this restaurant just does a lot of one-time business with tourists.
Try some place else!
I love Sushi Shiono. If I ever want authentic Japanese cuisine I always go here. Reminds me of Japan and fun fact the sushi chefs are from Japan so you know you're getting the real thing! Staff is always friendly and food is always on point and great service.
My favorite Japanese Restaurant in the Kona area.
The food was mediocre. The salad was good. Our party wasn’t looking for sushi but for well prepared cooked Japanese food. There was no fresh caught fish available unless we wanted sushi. I wanted soba noodle soup with tofu skins & vegetables and was told there were no vegetables available only green onions. Then when the platters of chicken teriyaki were served they had nice vegetables on the dish. The butter fish was all skin & really greasy. Maybe just a good place for sushi.
Initially it wasn't a great experience due to my booking my reservation through open table yet we waited at least 15 minutes for our table, on top of that it is very crowded and loud in that restaurant, my boyfriend loved his food it was amazing just the service initially wasn't great we were thinking that we had booked our reservation and get seated immediately but that was not the case so that was pretty upsetting, a reservation is a reserved table...
Sat at the sushi bar. The sushi chefs were amazing to watch and very friendly.
Best sushi we’ve ever had. Miso soup was stellar flavor and the sashimi and nigiri were so fresh and neatly presented. The roll we ordered was a Muau????? Amazing- just astounding flavor and presentation.
There was a mix up with our reservation(said we were a no show earlier although we arrived 5 minutes early for our 7:30 reservation. Any way we sat at the sushi bar and had a great meal of mixed sushi and some tempura and miso soup. My wife is a veg head and she had plenty of options.
Have you ever been to a highly recommended restaurant when the service was so poor it completely eliminated any chance of enjoyment? Welcome to Sushi Shiono. In fact, the beyond-terrible service became THE subject of our conversation with our friends. The drinks took 20+ minutes to arrive and were all wrong, the server continually had this horrified expression as she mumbled something about the bartender not showing up and problems in the kitchen and a large party in the other room. Many times food was brought to our table that we had not ordered. Very long delays for any service. This went on and on. Yea sure the food, when it finally arrived, was fine but at that point who cared? Worse, there was no effort to apologize or make things right. Comp a round of drinks ? No. Try this special dessert on the house? No. The only good news was the substantial savings on the gratuity!!
Really great Sushi. We come here every time we come to Kona and are never disappointed.
High quality sushi. The yellowtail was outstanding. Friendly staff. Loved it.
Awesome food, great staff, first time at alii drive location have ate at mauna lani location before
I loved my experience there. The service, atmosphere, and food were excellent. Love the feeling and would totally recommend and go there again.
One of the better place to have an Omakase sushi course on the Big Island. I really didn’t expect to have Sushi of that quality. You must experience the Omakase course. will definitely go back again, again and again!
