About Sushi Sasabune Hawaii

SUSHI SASABUNE was just voted "Best Restaurant Hawaii" and wins "Top Food Honors" by 2011/2012 Zagat’s survey magazine. But be advised, we do not offer California rolls, and the majority of our 'OMAKASE - leave it up to chef" style of sushi is not to be seasoned with soy sauce or wasabi. This should be new experience for you, and we assure you that you will enjoy. Each small plate is meant to compliment the previous, and prepare you for the next. You will experience sashimi, and some crafted sushi in its purest form. A local food writer, after sharing a dinner in our restaurant described the style of sushi as "The fish and shellfish, is extremely fresh. There is no odor or aftertaste. It is so fresh that its taste is sweet, a characteristic have not experienced at other restaurants." So please join us and allow the chef to be your guide through today's freshest fish found at the market, and please relax, enjoy follow the chef's only

Excellent food, unique flavors but not gimmicky at all. Best sushi I've ever had by far.

This takes sushi to new heights. You're pretty certain to find fresh fish in Hawaii, as we did on our first night in Honolulu. But it was very ordinary. Sasabune serves fish from all over but in very creative and delicious ways. We ate at the sushi bar and had omikase, or chef's choice, which was just fine. They don't serve soy sauce but if the fish should have some, the chef puts the correct amount on. They also spritz most of the fish with yuzu juice, just a bit. They did a great riff on "oysters Rockefeller", but with an Asian twist.
All in all, a great sushi lunch which pretty much had me full the rest of the day.

Just OK! I read many good reviews but my experience was unimpressive. People need to stop chasing the hype. There are plenty of good restaurants that offer better experience overall.

My husband and I had both types of Omikase dinners so we could share plates. It was great as expected, I had been to the Sasabune in LA before and knew I was going to be getting great food and great service. The fish selections are delicious, well prepared, plated nicely, and the chefs are excited to be sharing these delicacies with you! While the tasting menu is pricey, it is something we only do on special occasions.

Great food and service! However, I wasn't a big fan of oysters. Prefer fish dishes.

Overall the best dining experience I've ever had. My wife and I chose the omakase dining experience and every plate was just stellar. The service was an A+ and each dish was described to us in detail. If you love sushi/sashimi this is one stop you don't want to miss.

My boyfriend and I went to Sasabune for our anniversary dinner. Neither of us have ever been before, so upon making reservations, we decided to go with omakase and sushi bar seating. Such a great decision! The chefs are so knowledgeable and passionate about their product and really took the time to answer any questions we (as Sasabune newbies) had. Okay so, about the food. I have to say Sasabune ruined sushi for me... the quality and taste of the dishes are top knotch. I don't think I will be able to go down to my normal spots to eat sushi and be satisfied. Sasabune has redefined my expectations of sushi and nothing else will suffice. The price is worth it and you will leave super full/satisfied. I would recommend this place for special occasions but Lord knows that if I was a balla, I'd be up in the spot every day.

This was my first time dining at sasabune. Upon arrival i was expecting more of a fine dining atmosphere, but was disappointed as the ambience felt more like a dive. We chose to have omakase, which was a mistake. I only liked about 75% of what was served and for the price of what ended up to be $130 per person i felt jaded. Sorry sasabune, this will be my first and last time dining here.

I was nervous coming here because I read the reviews and thought that if I made one tiny mistake I'd get kicked out. Not the case. Our waiter was really cool and friendly and told us when to use the wasabi. We felt comfortable enough asking him 'how do I eat this?' and he was pretty laid back. We even saw him take a couple group pictures for one table. I'm not too good with chopsticks but powered thru. All the bites were perfectly sized and fit in my mouth....one thing I was worried about because I didn't want to be THAT person who cuts up her sushi with a knife.

We made sure not to use our cell phones but did see other tables take pics of the food. The hubs and I finished all 13 courses no sweat. Maybe it was because we hiked all day and barely ate anything, but the 13 courses were not overwhelming. So, with the 13 courses and a bottle of wine, we spent close to $400; that's including the tip. Very $$$$ but a once in a lifetime meal.

Husband and i opted for the omakase. Normally it is 13 courses but we could only eat 10 before we tapped out. Each dish was exceptional. The waiters and waitresses were on point. Sake and beer were a nice addition to the dishes. Pricey but so worth it. For 10 courses, a beer and 1 sake drink total came out to about $270 after taxes. Recommend to make reservations as seating is limited.

The best sushi in Hawaii or anywhere with the best service. We had the "trust me" menu which was outstanding. It was tasty, original, top quality, and filling. It included everything from abalone, lobster, and clams to uni and ikura to a wide variety of fish, including toro and the best Saba you will ever taste. The variety was fantastic. The sushi was topped with a variety of seasonings so you do not need soy sauce which would ruin the taste. The menu was better than when we were there a few years ago. Try to sit at the sushi bar rather than a table. The sushi chef also was in a great mood - actually smiling and laughing . It is pricey but worth it.

We came here for omakase and were pretty disappointed. First of most of the sushi pieces were prepared in the back, which is not customary of an omakase meal. Usually the pieces are prepared with care by the chef behind the bar and served one by one. In this case they were served two at a time, which wouldn't have been a big deal to me if they were good. Most of the nigiri pieces were topped with some kind of a overpowering garnish that really took away from the flavor of the actual fish. The balance of each piece was not present because of over use of sauce and strong tasting garnishes. We even received an appetizer that was dowsed in teriyaki sauce (for a $120 meal thats pretty unacceptable). My partner and I were extremely disappointed with the experience, having come with anticipation of a delightful omakase experience we left unsatisfied and $240 poorer.

The food was, as always, great. The waiter recommended a fantastic bottle of sake. However, the wait staff hovered over our table the entire evening, removing empty dishes literally the second we cleared them. In one instance--and I am not giving to exaggeration, I was taking the piece of sushi off the plate and the waiter took the plate before I actually got it to my mouth. It made the evening feel very rushed.

This is a real deal Japanese sushi joint. If you truly have a passion for this culinary art, then this is a must to visit. If you just enjoy sushi on a casual level, you owe it to yourself to go here, order Omakase, and put your trust in their hands to execute a top notch quality example of TRUE Japanese sushi. A gem like this is rare to come by. Believe me, I travel the world seeking culinary indulgences.
