SUSHI SASABUNE was just voted "Best Restaurant Hawaii" and wins "Top Food Honors" by 2011/2012 Zagat’s survey magazine. But be advised, we do not offer California rolls, and the majority of our 'OMAKASE - leave it up to chef" style of sushi is not to be seasoned with soy sauce or wasabi. This should be new experience for you, and we assure you that you will enjoy. Each small plate is meant to compliment the previous, and prepare you for the next. You will experience sashimi, and some crafted sushi in its purest form. A local food writer, after sharing a dinner in our restaurant described the style of sushi as "The fish and shellfish, is extremely fresh. There is no odor or aftertaste. It is so fresh that its taste is sweet, a characteristic have not experienced at other restaurants." So please join us and allow the chef to be your guide through today's freshest fish found at the market, and please relax, enjoy follow the chef's only

I ate here previously in 2005. Yes I came back 13 years later bc I loved it that much. If you love sushi, order the omakase and treat yourself to a great meal that you will never forget.

We love this sushi experience ! Omakase style is the way to go... just let the sushi chef do his thing. The fish is so fresh and the interesting tidbits of sauces/ garnish are very unique. It is pricey, but like no other. Can’t wait to return.

The food was excellent, as was the service. Was surprised to find that there was basically no ala carte menu. We were told we had to order either American or Japanese omakase.

Fantastic sushi. Would have liked more time between pieces and less hovering to clear plates after each piece.

For sushi lovers this is a awesome food experience! You must be open to trying anything. No California rolls here. The fish is very fresh...melts in your mouth. The preparation is unique and the flavors outstanding. Highly recommend

Very good food. No menu though, so omakase only. You have a choice of 2 different omakase courses. A shellfish heavy one or a sashimi one. We went with the sashimi. Delicious but I feel most of the fish would have been better without the sauce. The quality of the fish is so good, but some of them are just overpowered by the sauce they put on. I would suggest on the side for every dish if possible. But delicious, and a nice quiet place where you can actually have a conversation. Staff is very attentive and my water glass was never left empty for long. Which is always a big thing for me as I drink a lot of water.

The outside might not look so great but once you walk in you are transported to a Japanese garden. Sit at the sushi bar and let the plates roll in. The wait staff is very knowledgeable about the Sake served and the plates prepared by the chef. The chef looks intimidating but once you see his smile you know he is happy watching patrons enjoy his creations. Not to be missed when you are in Hawaii.

Amazing food!!! Chef tasting was a great option. Each piece had a unique flavor. Looked forward to each new plate. Little worried about the “Trust Me”, but completely worth the “trust Me”. Will visit every time in town.

Sitting by sushi bar offers the best tasting menu at chef's discretion. Stop the excellent presentation anytime, when you feels it's enough.

This by far and away the best quality sushi anywhere in Hawaii. It’s omakase only and don’t even think you’re gonna get a California roll.

This is our 2nd time eating here in while on vacation and were very disappointed. The first time was absolutely amazing but the most recent time was very underwhelming. The cost is high which is to be expected for high quality fish but it was not warranted this time around. We chose the omakase and maybe the sushi chef was new from our first experience but insisted on placing a garnish on every piece of sushi that we received which ruined what would otherwise seem to be very fresh selection of fish. Our preference is to enjoy the natural flavor of the fish simply with wasabi. If you like a garnish or sauce on your sushi maybe you would have a better experience than we did. We will not be back.

Extremely disappointed, fake sushi!!! Had to stop the Omakase midpoint, so bad. Sushi rice was cheap medium grain, not short grain ...barely any vinegar flavor, dry and not worthy of sushi. Sasabune tries to hide this deficiency by serving it warm. Not even close to what's served at the original WLA joint. Totally overrated and truly not up to the hype, doesn't compare to best omakase sushi in Cali, each sushi fish had to be pasted or dunked with some kind of sauce. I guess they think locals and tourists are idiots. Atmosphere, interior a nightmare. TRUST ME, don't waste your time and money.

Cannot emphasize enough how good the omakase at this place is. Inventive, delicious and seemingly never ending with incredibly fresh ingredients and nigh-perfect execution. It does not disappoint on any level save for the decor. It's a little downtrodden looking, but the looks are absolutely deceptive.

Restaurant had an unpleasant smell when we walked in.
Wait staff didn’t speak English well enough.
Food was average and not worth the hefty price.
One in every 4 or 5 dishes was to our tastes otherwise we were just eating for the sake of it as it was made and already on our bill.
Went to Nobu the next night, sushi there is to die for!!!! Worth every cent. Much more logical to order what you like.

Sushi Sasabune is a good sushi restaurant. 4 or 5 stars if that's all I was considering. However, it's a below average when compared to similar omakase sushi restaurants.

I've done omakase before. These restaurants typically charge high prices for a curated high-end sushi experience. Each dish is carefully timed and presented to highlight it's unique qualities and to set up the next plate. Drinks are often recommended to complement certain plates.

As Sasabune the similarities end at the high prices. Yes, the sushi is generally high quality. You would never know it because EVERY PIECE is covered in sauce. Add to that the distracting noise of the restaurant and the fact that we never spoke with the chef. The two chefs prepared dishes assembly-line style while a waiter would deliver each dish to us. Not really the intimate omakase experience that I would expect at over $400 for a couple.

I actually found this restaurant looking at Opentable recommendations...and every single one was right. Completely exceeded my expectations. Sushi was so fresh, interesting, original, and beautiful. I wanted to keep eating but simply couldn't. The service was great, extremely accommodating and prompt. It was clear this is a spot that has a regular following as so many people greeted the chef by name. This restaurant would be the reason I to return to Honolulu. I'm still thinking about it a week later!

We have been coming here for years and return every time we visit. Quite simply, this is the best omakase in Hawaii. The preparations are exquisite and it is a religious experience to dine here. It is imperative that one be respectful of the surroundings by not speaking loudly and by following the suggestions of the sushi master. The decor is simple and fits the aesthetic of the food being the star. Finally, if you are looking to maintain a budget, this is not for you. Our omakase meal for two (with a very reasonably priced bottle of wine) typically runs $325 with tax/tip, and it is worth every single penny of that!

The Omakase selection was excellent. The octopus was absolutely memorable - I’ve never had octopus prepared so totally tender and delicious. The unagi and 1st course were also a memorably tasty experience as well.

I stumbled upon Sushi Sasabune 9 years ago and have been comparing every sushi experience to this one since - none have come even close to this good. Now back so many years later and it's just as fabulous. None of the fish were "fishy," and the omakase variety was amazing.

We have had great sushi all over the world but still think the omakase here is among our favorite. Creative sauces with fresh catches. Would like a little less sushi and more sashimi. Fun atmosphere and we think it’s worth the one hour drive each way from the north shore.
