Sushi Ran is a longstanding Japanese restaurant located in Sausalito, California that specializes in sushi. The restaurant prepares menu items utilizing fresh fish delivered from Tokyo daily and features a casual, family friendly dining atmosphere.
Sushi Ran serves lunch and dinner daily and features an extensive menu offering of moriawase, maki, nigri and sashimi, vegetables, soup, cool plates and hot plates. Cool and hot plate options at the restaurant include Hokkaido scallop crudo, miso Wagyu beef, big eye tuna tartare, asari clam, braised beef tongue and organic chicken. Nigri and sashimi options featured at Sushi Ran include tuna, yellowtail, white fish, beef, mackerel, eel salmon, shellfish, caviar, toro tataki and more.
This was the 4th time in 8 years that we have eaten here. I was disappointed with the food on this visit. It seems that the menu changed and was not as good, especially for the price. I had the fatty tuna with truffle. The truffle was old and had absolutely no flavor and the tuna was bland. Very dissatisfied for $5 per bite meal. I ended up canceling our next reservation 2 nights later and ate some where else. This visit definitely a let down.
Had a work dinner and it went very well! Great food and service! A good time was had by all!
The sashimi was so incredibly fresh! And the saki flight was great too.
It is our favorite restaurant in the Bay Area.
I have been a customer for many years and Sushi Ran still consistently delivers a great dining experience.
Love this place, best sushi I ever had. A very classy place.
Simply put, some of the best sushi to be found in the USA. And dessert is not to be taken lightly either!
Meal of a lifetime.
Food was amazing!! The black cod. Was by far the best I've ever had. Melted in my mouth and so much flavour. Scallop sashimi was awesome. It was just a great experience overall
food was great. terrific waitress, too. reasonable price.
Excellent! We met the owner thru friends and he ordered everything for us and it was just fabulous. Lemon drop cocktail was a ringer. just a wonderful evening in a lovely spot.
Extremely fresh ingredients. Top notch fish and meat. Had the grilled tenderloin. Haven't had such a tender piece of meat in a long time.
enjoyed it very much will reccommend it to friends and family
Absurdly expensive - $200 for myself and my wife
Potentially my best sushi experience - and I went to Japan last year! The quality is remarkable and the chefs walk a fantastic line between simplicity and originality. It was great to have so many excellent fish from Tsukiji market and local species as well.
Dedicated and attentive service was a plus, too.
My only reservation would be on the outside terrace, which does not match the quality of the experience and looks very common and is not really comfortable - ask to be seated inside instead if you can (we managed to and were feeling much better afterwards).
Although the food was decent, I was shocked to have paid $9 for one piece of small sushi - tuna. The ambiance was good. Service was ok. Food was a little different than regular sushi restaurants, but it was WAY overpriced!
Everything was delivered virus!
I don't have nothing but good things to say about this outstanding restaurant , the food is incredibly good , the service in the restaurant is more than excellent , prices are just fare considering the extraordinary quality of the plates , I just go twice this week during my vacations in San Francisco with my family we love it , so we repeat ... I just want to mention that the hostess where incredible rude and with any kind of education , my wife and daughter where terrified with this person , this is the first time I write something like this but , I think that this person totally ruin the excellent team work of all the people on the restaurant .
Loved it here - the Miso Cod was so delicious - a definite MUST TRY on the menu! I wasn't overly impressed with the Coconut Mochi Cake - I could've done without it!
Highly recommend the sushi bar if you want to order omakase!
They only gave you 11 pieces tinny Nigiri for 82 dollars and not even good quality to me...This place used be the best Japanese restaurant in Bayarea and they had fresh fish shipped from Tokyo everyday . Have no idea what happened to the restaurant now but it's absolutely going downhill . Chef Taka used be my favorite sushi chef but now seems he lost his talent ( or maybe patient) . What a pity!
There are Japanese restaurants in the Bay Area, and then there is Sushi Ran in a class by itself. Every dish was perfect. The service was also outstanding. We couldn't decide on which sushi to order and we asked him to pick it out for us. He did a great job and told us which order to eat them in. We had a wonderful time.
Food's always amazing.
We have been enjoying Sushi Ran for 27 years. Yoshi is a gracious host and the food is consistently spectacular--presentation, quality, freshness, flavor and unique combinations that you won't find anywhere else. Not inexpensive, but absolutely worth it!
Order the crunch roll, made by the "old recipe." It's the best. Also, the Vietnamese shaking beef is outstanding. I also adore the Salmon citrus roll. The owner is a very nice man who almost always comes by the table to make sure you are satisfied. I discovered all my favorite dishes by simply asking the wait staff for their recommendations. They never fail to please.
The best sushi in the Bay Area with the most professional service.
Fresh,Fresh,FreshSushi ,and welcoming staff. We were recommended to come here last year, and very excited to come back and stayed Sausalito for 3 days, came to Sushi Ran everyday
Sushi Ran was wonderful!!! BUT..when we arrived, there was NO record of our reservation
!!!!! Luckily they had room for us for a special Birthday lunch..I had e-mails and texts from open table confirming our " reservation "....Open Table messed up!! And the open table web site is impossible to navigate!! Open Table needs to get its act together. So disappointed with open table.
Best sushi we've ever had by a long shot! High quality fish and expert preparation. Very pleasant atmosphere with very attentive service. Will certainly return.
Always a special experience
We are from Japan and we are very picky when it comes to sushi. 80% of Sushi Ran's fish comes from Tsukiji; at least that's what the head sushi chef told us; it was excellent. We ordered omakase then backed it up with a la carte nigiri. My son probably had 15 nigiri himself. We were the second to last customers to leave the restaurant which was very interesting because we could watch the staff close down. You can tell the staff is very well trained Japanese style even though they were not Japanese except for 2 sushi chefs. All of the staff cleaned, wrapped, and prepared for the next day in great detail. They cleaned the knives, wrapped the fish, and wiped down the sushi counter like it was an operating room. You only see this kind of discipline in Japan. The price is relatively the same as other high quality sushi restaurants. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening.
Third visit to sushi ran and once again.....amazing. This place is creative with their sides and every dish that passes over the counter is to say the least, perfection. It's not cheap, but you definitely get what you pay for. Highly recommended if you are looking for top flight sushi, and for foodies, a must. Don't forget your reservation though, and sit at the bar and watch the show if you can.
My wife and had a reservation at Sushi Ran on February 13. We live in Sausalito and were dying to try the restaurant. It is a special place.
I don't know about you, but sometimes a sushi menu and the coordination between all diners required at the table is frustrating. We decided to do the prix fixe menu, as it offered us sashimi and sushi as well as salad 2 entrees (grilled) and desert.
All courses were fantastic. The saki choice by our server was fantastic and not priced outrageously.
I will go back again......
Excellent nigiri and maki sushi with the finest quality fish. Worth the cost as very little food is completely satisfying. Their black cod was as good or better than ever! I have been a patron for 20 years or more and would return anytime. There were two parts of our dinner that could use improvement: it took excessively long to deliver our sushi orders, and out tempura would have been much better with better cooking oil--taste was not as good as expected. Great wine selections.
We sat at the sushi counter and was served by chef Yoshi. We had the omakase which was excellent and Yoshi was happy to exclude some of the items that my friend was allergic to and make some substitutions for us. We ordered some additional pieces as the omakase is was not enough to fill us up, but also because everything we had was amazing. We asked for something with sisho leaf and chef Yoshi whipped up what he called "fisherman's tataki" with the freshest catch of the day, chopped with a dash of sea salt and wasabe layered over sisho and wrapped in the crispiest nori for a mouthful of flavor, texture, nuance and pure happiness. The waitress was knowledgeable about sakes and recommended 3 for a tasting flight to choose from. We liked 2 of the 3 and ordered a carafe of one of their junmai from the flight. Dessert was amazing, we had one off menu dessert by chef Yoshi and the warm toffee cake with ginger sorbet. Overall, a great meal and dining experience.
Crunch roll was wonderful, salad with miso dressing was great!
Upon strong recommendation from my sister, we made reservations about 2 weeks in advance for a Saturday night. We were still able to snag 8pm reservations. While we waited we ordered the Sushi Ran Chardonnay and the Whats the Rush cocktail- both worth repeating. We were seated in the building next to the main restaurant where the bar is. This made the ambiance not as strong and the experience a little less than perfect. But besides that, the food was wonderful. To drink, I continued with my wine while my husband moved onto warm Sake- from their ridiculous sake selection. We ordered 3 rolls- negihama, negitoro, and wagyu. All were well balanced, well plated, and insanely fresh. We also ordered the Toro tataki with the white truffle - phenomenal, meaty tuna with an incredible sauce. And lastly we ordered 2 warm plates: grilled Hamachi kama and king crab tempura. The crab tempura was simply incredible, melted like butter and with the sauce + cilantro +radish= perfection. The Hamachi was also delightful and meaty. You truly tasted the freshness with every bite even without the ponzo dipping sauce. But the real service started after everything we ordered. Our waiter started a conversation with us asking if it was our first time there, we said yes. He then told us about how the menu at the sushi bar was slightly different and what omakase entailed- he even brought us the menu to show us. He explained that you have to request the sushi bar with your reservation. He then brought us a dessert with banana, ice cream, and a rum sauce that was quite delicious along with 2 cold sparkling sake drinks to go with it- on the house. He was incredibly engaging and committed to our experience being wonderful. A truly beautiful dining experience and though we thought we would need burritos on the drive home, we were happy to find that we were both full from our meal. :)
This establishment is always a must for me every time I'm in the City. Looking forward to trying Nomica! Yoshi is the ultimate host. Never disappoints.
A MUST. The food from the kitchen and from the sushi bar is exquisite. Plus the wine and sake list is very interesting. Very refined Japanese cuisine.
Serious sushi for serious sushi eaters! Authentic sushi in US hard to find and this is the place! We are from Texas and always stop here when we are in town. Lucky for us we were served by the one of the world sushi chef champions! Great experience every time!
Exquisite sushi, gorgeously presented and swooningly delicious. The dessert sampler was the perfect finish. We cannot wait to dine again.
