What Insiders Are Saying
Sushi of Gari serves some of the best sushi on the Upper East Side.
At first, they sat us at a table but when we decided we would like to do Omakase, they gave us two great seats at the sushi bar right away. The service was great and the food was amazing. The sea bass sashimi was our third item and was incredible - it melted in my mouth. Attention to detail and cleanliness were nice things to see.
They need a more capable Maitre D
U can tell Gari has retired
Waitress was very friendly, accommodating and efficient. Sushi was fresh and delicious--as was everything we ordered. The pork dumplings were the best I've ever eaten. This was my first experience with this restaurant and I will definitely return.
All good, but too many small children. The price point is for serious diners, not for family dining.
Absolutely fantastic! We came from upstate to the city for the day and decided to give this place a try. We did the Omakase which is basically chefs choice for sushi and sashimi. The yellow tail with jalapeño was to die for. Ending it all with a spicy scallop hand roll. The flavors were unreal. All I can say is I can not wait to go back!!
At first I was put off by the strict rules of only two hours at a table. But after being completely wowed by the fresh sushi I understood why people were lining up at the door for a table!
Will definitely go back!!!
This is the only place where I will eat sushi, because it is incredible. Our favorite is the Tuna of Gari platter, but if you want to splurge, the omikase is fabulous. The seating is cozy, but makes for good conversation. The staff is attentive and friendly. This is a wonderful restaurant!
Wonderful food but the omakase tasting felt a little rushed.
I made a mistake and made the reservation for Saturday when I needed Friday, and it was a special occasion. I didn’t realize it until late Thursday night. I called on Friday and the reservation person was so nice and called back mid afternoon and said there had been a cancellation and we could come. She was really kind.
The sushi is always great, the service terrific.
Very innovative sushi and sashimi. Great sake list.
First time we had umami sushi combinations. Not only were they visually appealing but the tastes were superb. The traditional sushi was also very good and we rated it as high as our favorite restaurant in San Francisco. They also offer choices for sake and beer we have not seen or had before (the Kagua converted my wife to liking beer). It is more on the expensive end but we felt it was worth the experience.
Place is way overrated. Food just ok...ambiance/decor horrendous. Service rushed.
We took the Omakase menu (as the chef wants...) and the sushis were delicious and innovative.
The appetizers were less good ( aubergine, cod liver). The veggie tempura was OK and the nato served in a sushi roll was very interesting. Good choice of cold sake (junmai-ginjo) by the waiter.
Overall, not cheap but very interesting. We will come back.
Unless you order the Omakase or sushi ala carte your fish will be lackluster. At 45.00 for a sushi deluxe the options were ho hum and disappointing.
Sushi and service are great!!! I wish that there were specialty rolls on the menu or something. To me, that would validate the price a little bit more.
This place is hands down the best source of Sushi in the UES.
Sushi of Gari is fabulous----probably the most creative sushi in NYC.
The staff is very knowledgable and professional. Given the small size
of the restaurant, the room is quiet. Expensive but worth it.
Loved it, food was outstanding as usually. Sushi are great at al Gari’s NY locations, but I love this location the most. It’s less noisy and more comfortable.
The room smelled of mildew. Got Ill when I left there. Crazy expensive and really not tasty
Excellent sushi. If you can't afford the omakase I highly recommend the special sushi platter. Best meal I've had in a long time.
We ordered the omakase, which we have had before. It was incredibly delicious, but also interesting, with the chef's little arrangements of creams and herbs and sauces on top of wonderful sushi. We floated home, trying not to think about the bill.
Sushi was delicious and excellent quality. Service was fast and moderately friendly but rushed. Atmosphere is that of a strip mall sushi restaurant but I knew that going in. Omakase was extremely expensive and although delicious was a poor value. If I do return it would be for the regular menu as that is reasonably priced.
Great food, service, atmosphere and ambiance. Recommend to all upper east siders.
We had a reservation at 7:15 that i confirmed via opentable and phone the day of our reservation. When we showed up, the host claimed that we didn’t have a reservation, accused me of not completing it (I showed her my confirmation and the incoming call from their number), accused me of making it downtown (it was the correct location) and then didn’t seat us and her only offer was that we could have a table for 30 minutes but would have to leave after that amount of time. Meanwhile I got an email from opentable confirming that we had sat down and then a follow up email asking how our experience was. I’ve worked in the hospitality business for years and understand that mistakes and glitches can happen, but this was a completely unacceptable experience and handled incredibly poorly.
Our favorite neighborhood sushi restaurant. Quality of food is always consistent and service always attentive. What more can you ask for?
Superb ... excellent service, outstanding sushi & tempura! A very popular spot for locals & for travellers who are in the know. I was quickly served and made to feel at home. No rush in finishing my meal and lots of help with the menu. Must make a reservation. Enjoy!
The food was outstanding and so was the service.
Loved it! Delicious!
Love Sushi of Gari! The best in the UES
Service was excellent. We found their salads to be delicious. We didn’t really care for their signature sushi dishes (cream on tuna and tomato on salmon). I thought sushi pieces were on smaller side. Uni was tasty. Tempura a little overbattered. We decided to try this place before goin to see the Lehman Trilogy.
We eat here a lot and do the omakase at the counter. But this nite we were so disappointed we our chef. He wore an executive chef jacket so the other men who knew us and knew what we wanted were powerless to say anything. Food was good but bland. We are use to over the top omakase with so many specialty accouterments. This chef did what most other sushi restaurants do which is mostly just a piece of fish. Anyway so disappointing that we left half way through and gave up. Also we were told only omakase diners could sit at counter only to have the couple sitting next us just five minutes after us ordered ala carte and did not have omakase.
We ordered the omakasse but were not able to sit at the sushi bar. We sat at a nearby table.
I requested 8 pieces and my friend requested the usual 12 pieces in the omakasse order. That was a total of 20 pieces of sushi for about $200. The sushi was beautiful and delicious. Unfortunately, the sushi was brought out 4 pieces at a time. That makes for fast eating and forgetful descriptions of the food. When I sat at the sushi bar at an earlier time, each piece was served one at a time so you can remember what was offered, and the experience was great. When sitting at a nearby table, the sushi was served fast and the description was also fast and difficult to understand. We ate good food but didn’t really know what we were eating. Also ate so fast that it felt like a lump in my stomach even before we finished. The entire meal took less than 30 min. Not a good way to dine or enjoy really expensive food. For that reason, I would not recommend this restaurant u less you sit at the sushi bar.
We ordered Omakase and some of the sushi is not fresh at all.
Amazing as always!!
Food excellent, space very crowded. Waitress service slow.
We’ve been eating here for about 4 years!!! It’s the best sushi in the city and the most amazing omakase!
Excelente we love the people of Gary and service
While the food is extraordinary, no one expects to pay more than $500.00 for a sushi dinner for two. The cost is not worth the overall experience. the ambiance, décor and lighting are subpar making the dining solely about the food, but even then, a $300.00 sushi dinner would be at the outer limit of what you might expect to spend. Will not repeat.
Mediocre food for high prices, very boring atmosphere and experience. Wouldn’t go back
