Ridiculously overpriced pretentious restaurant with an undeserved cult following. Prices are embarrassing and for sushi that is merely good not outstanding or memorable. Arrogant hostess/manager. Will NEVER go again nor recommend it.

Below par. Ordered the omakase - The sushi was not as fresh as previous visits. Service was average and and for the sticker price expect more.

I've had omakase probably a couple of dozen times at different places. The omakase here was good. In fact, I'd say 3 out of the 12 pieces were outstanding. One of them might have been the best piece of sushi I ever had. But when I'm spending $120-$130 for 12 pieces of sushi, I kind of think it should be presented in a nicer place. Their sister restaurant, Sushi of Gari 46 is a nice place. Sushi of Gari UES is not. It was relatively clean I guess, but it looks like they moved into an existing space that might have been used as a small doctor's office or something. Zero design. Zero attention to detail. Zero good vibe. I'd recommend they close up and make this place as nice as their other place. Until then, I can be found at Shuko or Nakazawa.

Good sushi, but must be very VERY careful with this particular location. They overcharge tremendously, if you get the omakase. Have been coming here for years and while the food is good, the pricing is completely inaccurate and way off, compared to their other locations. Be very cautious.

Truly the best sushi on the upper east side. Masterfully prepared simplicity and memorable creativity side by side on the same dish.

Sushi of Gari is a quality sushi restaurant on the UES. we ate at the sushi bar which is preferred. The selections are excellent. The waiter informed us, as they should, that there is no set price for the Omakase dinner. When you are done say enough. The price was reasonable for what we ate. The cons are the ridiculously over priced sake and beer list. The least expensive sake is $18 for 4 oz. bottles start at $80 or so and go quickly to hundreds of dollars. When I go to Sasabune or Sushi Yasuda you can get selections of sake for less than $20, as well as higher priced choices. It is also too bright in all sections of the restaurant. A little ambiance would go a long way. A good choice but the high reviews seem to be inflated. But try it.

Prices are exorbitant. As it was my birthday, we splurged on the sushi/sashimi Omakase thinking it would be an incredible dining experience. Some pieces were good, some were not, it certainly wasn't what I anticipated . Overall, the total cost plus tip was $500. I could have spent less somewhere else and had better food and better atmosphere, definitely a disappointment for a Birthday and a big dent in the wallet.

Once again an outstanding meal at Sushi of Gari - upper East Side. The food was simply fresh, delicious, amazing and the sushi arranged on the plates very nicely.
The sake's are quite nice though a bit pricey.
I would keep on going there.

We have been going to Sushi of Gari UES for years, typically to celebrate a birthday or anniversary, or other special occasion. Effectively once a year. Food and service have always been very good to exceptional. Every time, we have the omakase ranging from 12 to 16 pieces per person. This time, I rated it 4 out of 5 stars primarily because we really didn't experience anything new. Over the years, it seemed that there would always be some new piece that we haven't tried before. Also, given that our reservations have always been on Opentable, the last time we were there, they made a comment about new pieces that we hadn't tried because they apparently took note of everything that we had tried in all the times that we had eaten there. So they knew what we liked, didn't like, and what we hadn't tried. This time, we didn't have the same experience. Either the waitress hadn't looked at the notes on our record, or maybe they were no longer available. So we more or less had the same thing as before. Always top notch, and it doesn't take away from the experience. But we were looking for that something extra. I guess it's hard to continue to be innovative all the time day in day out.

The food was incredibly mediocre and the tasting menu destroyed any delicacy contained in the idea of sushi. The menu was wildly overpriced given the low quality of the chewy, subpar fish we were served. The omakase tasting menu comes without a price, and when I asked the waitress for an estimate, she gave me a number that ended up being approximately $50 per person less than what I was eventually charged. In addition, we ordered a $50 half bottle of champagne to celebrate a special occasion and were only served 2 glasses total (1 per person) which is certainly less than half of what comes in a standard champagne bottle.

If you want good sushi on the East Side, I'd recommend the cheap fishy smelling takeout spot around the corner from Sushi of Gari before I'd ever advise a friend to dine here.

Sushi chefs are top notch with creativity and variety of offerings. Other items are ok - but the omakase is really the star here. Will (always) return...after replenish bank account.

We went to Sushi of Gari to celebrate my husband's birthday. We ordered the Gari's omakse which comes with 12 sushi pieces, appetizer, and two small drinks. We were so full at the end. The sushi was fresh and tasty. The service was great. They even brought over a cake and candle to help celebrate his birthday.

Really mediocre sushi - at the level of an okay neighbourhood place at 2-3x the price. Wouldn't make my list of top 100 sushi places. Not a single piece of excellent sushi, and plenty of below average stuff. Tired room and decor, cramped, poor service. I wouldn't finback even if someone else was paying.

I have been to several Japanese restaurant throughout my life, and I have had the honor to enjoy Omakase menu at all of them. During my experience at Sushi of Gari, although the food was fantastic, the price we had to pay was ridiculous and the service/experience was not meeting our expectations for a starred Michelin restaurant. Service was rushed, bottle of white wine was put on the table (not even with ice), we had specific dietary restrictions mentioned at the beginning of the meal, and we still received meals with those items.
140$ for 10 sushis, a rush service (we did not have time to enjoy our second glass of wine when the last service arrived)... Disappointing and expensive night. Again, not talking about the quality of the food and sushis, which were delightful. Would not recommend, unless you want to pay 3 to 4 times what other great Japanese in NY can offer.

We had the omakase sushi & sashimi and sat at the bar to watch them prepare it. It's rapid fire service (next dish comes seconds after you finish your current fish). The cod, red snapper, toro, salmon, clam, etc etc were all perfection to the eye and tongue - world class. It is not cheap but it is worth it if you are a sushi lover who wants superlative quality. Every piece was very fresh, tasty, and many were quite creative without overpowering the taste of the main fish involved. The service was perfect - the chefs and waitresses were all outstanding and attentive. I wish they had some cheaper cold sake (90$ bottle was the cheapest they had), but the one we had was enjoyable and paired well with the meal. I will be back for more in the near future!

We spent $590 for 3 omakases and some drinks but were rushed all the way through the servings of the omakase. They did not let us enjoy the superb sushi as the waitress kept on taking the plates out as soon as we raised the chopstick with the sushi piece. We usually go to the one on the west side which is much nicer place and ambiance and we are never rushed. Totally disappointed with the East side location. They kicked us out in 45 minutes. Such a special meal should be enjoyed longer
