Sushi of Gari serves some of the best sushi on the Upper East Side.
I came with my boyfriend to celebrate his 30th. It was perfect. Great and friendly staff. Food was amazing. The whole experience was everything I was looking for to celebrate.
My partner and I visited Sushi of Gari UES for the first time for a special occasion on a Saturday night, and we were so impressed with the food we ordered, the Sushi Deluxe and the Sushi Special, both of which were beautifully plated and tasted even better. The quality of the fish was superb. We also tried the tempura appetizer, which while good, was not something we'd order again, as it didn't blow us away. The service was also excellent, and contrary to some other reviewers' experiences, we did not feel rushed at all. On top of that, we were celebrating a birthday, and despite our turning down dessert, the waiter presented us with an on-the-house plate of tempura-fried ice cream, which was much better than described and a nice touch to our dining experience.
The only caveats: It's all relative, but if you're looking for a casual (read: cheap) dinner and not looking to drop $50 per plate or more on sushi, there aren't many options that you can cobble together for a meal, as the menu does not include individual rolls. The sake prices, as other reviewers have commented, were prohibitively high. And while the ambiance leaves a something to be desired, the food and service more than made up for that.
We went yesterday evening for my boyfriend's birthday and had an amazing experience.
This restaurant does the traditional omakase style - "as the chef likes," where the sushi chef monitors what and how much you eat and will continue to serve pieces until you say stop- (hence, the variability of the prices.) I truly enjoyed all pieces and found them rather innovative and capable of invoking that sensation of umami with each bite. I am still acquiring a taste for uni, but other than loved every other piece served. The otoro, snapper, sweet shrimp with rock salt, sauteed tomato, quail egg with truffle, chutoro with tofu sauce. We also got a dessert at the end - tempura green tea ice cream with homemade strawberry sauce. I am in heaven just recalling what I ate.
The ambiance is different from other NYC omakase sushi places in that it still has that casual feel. There is a dining room behind the sushi bar so it is not intimate and quiet if that is what you are looking for or expecting given the expensive price of an omakase meal. However, for me it is all about the food and the service and I am so pleased to report that both were superb! I have read other reviews where people said they felt "rushed" during their omakase but I felt the pace was on point. I highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely be back :) Arigatoogozaimasu Sushi of Gari for a divine meal!
Favorite sushi spot!
Incredible omikasse options! Couldn’t say enough on how fresh and delicious the sushi/sashimi tasted. Definitely a special occasion event, as this was outrageously expensive; more than any other high end sushi place I’ve ever been to. Amazing experience overall.
Fantastic as always
Amazing sushi. You don't need to get the omakase and spend 150$ to have an amazing meal. The sushi and rice are some of the best I have ever had. Had a spicy tuna roll I will think about for weeks. Even the white rice tasted really fancy and good. Waiter was kind of rude but in the "we have a procedure" you will follow it fancy resturant type of way, otherwise vey nice and service was incredibly fast. I want to go back its a great resturant. Late night on a friday the place was poppin.
Best sushi in nyc but you need to know wat to get. They even made me a few special delicious and innovative vegetable pieces.

This is by far -- the most exquisite sushi I have ever had on a continuous basis. This particular location outshines the others -- service is as stellar as each special plate. It's pricey but it's as scrumptious and fresh as you're ever going to get.
Been going to Gari since it opened in the nineties. It has lost its charm. The sushi seems mass produced, rushed and no longer spectacular. While the fish is delicious, sometimes the sushi is off temp or soggy. Sadly, the pristine perfection has vanished with the overcrowded sushi bar and tables. I can no longer justify cashing in a CD for this sushi.

My favorite sushi in Manhattan. Love their uni, straight from Hokkaido. Makes me feel like I'm at my favorite sushi place in Tokyo. Only drawback very crowded.
We absolutely loved it! From the moment we arrived the service and food was excellent. We recommend the omakase. It was enjoyable and we will definitely be back!

We had a terrible experience. The restaurant is extremely crowded. There’s barely room to turn around. When we wanted to leave the Couple waiting for a table had to back out in order to make room for us to leave. My chair bounced up and down every time serving person walked by. I have the omaksi dinner which was disappointing because it was simply three plates of sushi. There was no attempt at sashimi or interesting vegetables except for a few little vegetables served first. The quality of the fish was good but considering I was told it would be about $120 and it turned out to be $139, the fish was not that spectacular. One dish was a fried clam. My companion had ordered a sushi plate and received the same sushi fried clam as part of my order. Yet her fried clam had a lovely sauce on top which gave it an interesting flavor. Mine had no sauce. There is certainly no reason to order the expensive chefs choice. I cannot recommend this restaurant on any level. My only recommendation is to stay away.
Best sushi ever
While my sushi was just ok, everyone else at the table really enjoyed theirs. The restaurant is cramped. The waitress was friendly, but was trying hard to push items on the menu on us. I certainly wouldn't avoid this restaurant; I just wouldn't go out of my way to dine at it.

Food is so good it compensates for the rest.
It's been 4 years since I last visited and it was as good as I remembered it. Very creative, very fresh and not about the atmosphere, it's all about the perfect harmony of the food. Ordered the sushi omakase. I think we ate about 11 pieces, and added a roll separately. Two glasses of wine and total paid about $343 for 2 people. Now my memory is still fresh and I already want to go back again.
Maybe the only think I can say is the rice can be more warm and soft.
Go for omakase. This is how you dine in at the Gari. Note: this can be pricey but you already expected this at the moment you enter the restaurant
Tired and stuffy. No ambiance. And the restaurant smells like the urinal cakes in the restroom. Not kidding. If Gari is your sushi of choice, go West. At least the Columbus Ave location has a much cleaner and modern feel.
Insanely overpriced. We tried the Omikase chef tasting menu having heard great things about this place. Although each cut of fish is certainly fresh, there is nothing special about any of it, and most of the pieces have nothing but half-hearted sauce added in a blob on the top with nothing in terms of presentation. After being told it would likely run $130/person, our bill was $180/person. This place has neither the ambience nor the service to warrant a $400 price tag.
We have been to both the Upper East side Sushi of Gari as well as the one in the theater district. We prefer the Upper East side for it's ambience! I grew up in Tokyo and this one "feels" more like a typical small, friendly restaurant in Japan.
The food was incredible as well as its service. I will be back again.
Ridiculously overpriced pretentious restaurant with an undeserved cult following. Prices are embarrassing and for sushi that is merely good not outstanding or memorable. Arrogant hostess/manager. Will NEVER go again nor recommend it.

I've had omakase probably a couple of dozen times at different places. The omakase here was good. In fact, I'd say 3 out of the 12 pieces were outstanding. One of them might have been the best piece of sushi I ever had. But when I'm spending $120-$130 for 12 pieces of sushi, I kind of think it should be presented in a nicer place. Their sister restaurant, Sushi of Gari 46 is a nice place. Sushi of Gari UES is not. It was relatively clean I guess, but it looks like they moved into an existing space that might have been used as a small doctor's office or something. Zero design. Zero attention to detail. Zero good vibe. I'd recommend they close up and make this place as nice as their other place. Until then, I can be found at Shuko or Nakazawa.
Good sushi, but must be very VERY careful with this particular location. They overcharge tremendously, if you get the omakase. Have been coming here for years and while the food is good, the pricing is completely inaccurate and way off, compared to their other locations. Be very cautious.
