awkward service, for an exorbitantly expensive omakase that leaned heavily on more crowd friendly fish like tuna, but lacked flair and creativity.
Wonderful experience as usual! We love this place and its omakase!
We have been eating here for years but our latest visit was really disappointing. Reservation not promptly honored, really slow service and several items were not good at all. Hope this was just an off night as this is one of our favorite places!
We paid a ridiculous about for a terrible omakase. Literally had simultaneously the worst but also the most expensive sushi of my life here. Also we went on Valentine’s Day and they were only offering omakase without any notification via website.
Such beautiful Omakase. The service was impeccable. A lovely evening with excellent food. The sake choices were uniquely wonderful.
Engagement Celebration
Had an amazing time at Sushi of Gari. Tried the Omakase and managed to eat 14 pieces. Every piece was delicious and extremely interesting. I would have preferred if all of the fish was served raw instead of some being fried or cooked. But overall amazing!
Yes. Best sushi on the upper east side. I love the feel of this place, very relaxed. The sushi was phenomenal, leaving me already planning my next visit.
When you dine at Gari you will swear off supermarket sushi forever !
Completely empty restaurant, they were uninformed about gluten free options for my husband, food came out too quickly, and it was expensive for the quality of the food/experience. Will not return.
Terrific food and service but rather overpriced.
Sushi of Gari is usually outstanding, but not so on this visit. The sushi was dry, with little taste, the service was rushed. I don't know what happened to this wonderful restaurant, not sure I will go back.
Best sushi in the world
Disappointing. Been here many times and previously considered it on of my top picks for Omakase in NYC. Sadly, the chief sushi chef was just rotated to a different branch of sushi Gari and the food isn’t of the same level anymore. Hopefully it was just an off night.
Very ordinary. Nothing outstanding. Not very tasty. Not cosy. The place is just awfully small.
We always would come here when visiting NY but after our last visit it's off the list. Sushi was essentially the same combinations but lacking any flavor or anything special. Super sad to see it slip.
I am a frequent guest at Sushi of Gari's in TriBeCa which is SUPERB. I was in the area and decided to book your UES location.
When we entered the space the hostess and staff were not ready to welcome us aka "no hospitality". The room was incredibly hot and we asked them to turn off the heat and open the window or door. The hostess was annoyed and offered to put us in a claustrophobic hallway with no windows or air.
Our appetizers were brought about 10 minutes apart. We had ordered extra ginger, lemon and no shrimp and everything was forgotten. We were pushed out from our table and the service was terrible. I would never return.
Shame on you to charge these prices for this experience.
The sushi here is always unbelievable!!! Honestly the best I've ever had! So worth it!

LOVE THEIR SUSHI. It one of my most favorite places to eat in NYC
One of the Best Japanese Restaurants in all of NY
Omasake is so delicious. Our go to restaurant for sushi & sashimi. Fresh tasty simple. We love it
Fabulous, fresh, beautiful sushi & wonderful cooked items. Gyoza, tempura, Yakitori, miso soup, etc—all perfect. Very small restaurant (so don’t go for the atmosphere) but the staff is friendly and efficient & food top-notch. My favorite Neighborhood Japanese.
One of the Best Japanese Restaurants in NYC. Sushi is perfection
The food was delicious, best sushi we’ve had in a long time. The seaweed salad was also wonderful!
average quality
The restaurant accommodations are very cramped for a high priced place. The sushi was very good,
but Gari's approach is to overwhelm the fish with imaginative sauces, which is not to my taste. (We
had the omakase menu.) The prices are very high, but I would still recommend this place for those who want to try a different kind of sushi.
consistently amazing. pricey but worth it. we love it
With friend
Excellent omakase!
Was was really good. Service was ok. Place is very small and cramped. Everything about it is tight. I’m a fairly big guy and I was a bit uncomfortable navigating the place and was really wedged in when I sat down. Overall value was ok.
Fine food - a cut above most Japanese restaurants. Recommended.
Greatest, most unique and original sushi. Sublime. On a busy Saturday night the service was still friendly and efficient.
Amazing sushi. Nice staff. A bit pricey. But really fresh fish.
Best sushi in NYC
This might be the worst place for a first date. Zero atmosphere, and everyone is packed in like sardines. Our waiter was the most awkward person I’ve ever met. He brought us an iPad with pictures of sushi rolls that were not on the menu. How am I supposed to pick sushi from a bunch of pictures? So weird! The sushi was not terrible, but nothing special compared to other places in the city. Their sushi rice contains gluten and they do not have any gluten free options. If the top sushi restaurants in NYC don’t use gluten in their sushi rice, it’s not necessary. Would not recommend!
Servicio más o menos. Comida normal.
Food was excellent. Ambience was non-existent. Hostess was not accommodating. She argued about giving us an open table near the window, and wanted to seat us at one near the restroom, even though the window table was available. Given that this was a special occasion, which had been noted when the reservation was made, and that the table was available, this was unacceptable.
Really very good sushi but fast in and out and very expensive sake choices which not really necessary. Even house sake is $65 per 6oz..Anyway really very good sushi
