What Insiders Are Saying
Sushi of Gari serves some of the best sushi on the Upper East Side.
Went to Sushi of Gari last Sunday night with my two teenage children. We had made a reservation and we were seated right away. The restaurant is small but the noise level was okay. The service was good, our food came out fairly quickly despite the restaurant being full. The sushi was focused on the seafood, not a lot of add-ons. We got edamame, tempura squash, and pork gyoza to start. Dinner was shrimp tempura roll, squid roll, tuna roll, and crab/avocado roll. The rolls were not large but with the appetizers, we had enough food.
Sushi Gari is still one of the best sushi places in town.
Food is amazing.
Sushi of Gari never disappoints! Excellent sushi, sublime, top grade, creative plates- perfection!
Place is cramped in this location but food is so good i dont mind
The food is always terrific and so is the service.
Fantastic. Great food. Space is a bit cramped. Worth a visit.
The food was very good but I must say I have NEVER been rushed out of a restaurant one hour in. It is not like we were sitting there not eating or drinking. We ate numerous pieces of sashimi, had3 glasses of wine each and the waitress kept coming over forcing us out. I understand turning tables over but this was just so inappropriate and uncomfortable I will never return. The bill was $250 so it’s not like we were cheap sitting there wasting their time. There are plenty of restaurants that offer sushi that is on the same caliber and allow you to enjoy your experience instead of rushing you out after 60 minutes.
Unfortunately we had a bad waiter who brought e Ety thing wrong.
Spectacular (but not inexpensive) Omakase. Will go back
Sushi of Gari is always a standout and a treat! I savor every bite!
The food is really special and surprisingly. The best japonese food in NYC in my opinion.
Resting on their laurels. Food was very good. Service was awful. Room could use some improvement, too.
have never had a bad meal. will keep going back.
Quality of ingredients was very lame
Exceptional Japanese food. Not your average sushi place Excellent service great atmosphere
De mis restaurantes favoritos en NYC.
Omakase al excelente gusto del chef. Cada nigiri es mejor que el anterior. Los sabores explotan en boca!
The yummiest omakaze ever
Beat sushi I’ve ever had and extremely attentive and friendly service.
Great choices for myself, a vegetarian, and my husband enjoyed the sashimi and said it was really fresh. Ambiance was ok, a little too loud and bright for my taste but service was friendly and attentive and overall the meal was enjoyable.
Their food is always fresh and delicious! The service is excellent. I love Sushi Gary!
Fresh fish! Creative dishes .
Friendly and perfect service .
Average sushi. Thst is all. We expected great sushi, but have had better even at buffets.
We enjoyed the omakase option which was super delicious and fun.
Gari is my favorite place!
Gonna be honest here. Was very excited for this. Took my girl friend for her birthday and ordered the famous Omasake. There were screaming children. We were crammed away in a small hallway on the side of the restaurant. It was impossible to fully understand what the wait staff was saying which was fine... UNTIL. The waiter made it clear the dish was Market Price, and stated it should be between $100-130 each. Ended up coming to $351. The food was great, but not worth that much. I’ve had a knot in a stomach and bank account since.
Buyer beware the foods unreal, but unless it’s on a corporate account stay far away from anything “market price” on this menu. I’d bet traditional sushi here is great though.
we sat at the bar and decided we don’t want to do omakase since we already know our favorite pieces. First we were told Hokkaido uni is for omakase only which is fine but then i asked for ginger and they brought us old stale ginger from the back. People sitting next to us were served fresh yellow color ginger like it’s supposed to be, so i asked for ginger again they again brought us same old brown ginger. we asked why are we being served this ginger and we’re told it’s for omakase only. We ordered more pieces than people with omakase next to us and our bill was twice as much but we got old ginger. This is beyond ridiculous!!! We’re paying same money as other people why can’t we get fresh ginger?!?? I’m never coming back here again. Also quality of the fish changed drastically, wasn’t fresh like it used to be.
The restaurant urgently needs a makeover, looks rundown
The food is good but not worth the price
The omakase was a decent value at $130 or so for 12 pieces of nigiri and a couple of amuse bouche, but only a few of the pieces truly stood out in terms of freshness or inventiveness.
Had the tuna sushi special. Been a staple of Gari’s for years. Just not as good as before. Still great though and unmatched on ues
Sushi were too dry and left a dry feeling in the mouth.
We thoroughly enjoyed a sushi tasting with a sake tasting. The sushi was creative and very fresh as usual. The sake was exquisite. We felt like we took a trip to Japan.
The fish was of a very high quality. The seasonal special pieces were fantastic. Service was excellent. Glad we were seated in the back area the restaurant is extremely small and a little claustrophobic but the sushi was on par with some of the best we have had and we have had a lot of sushi at some of the most notable sushi restaurants in New York, Vegas and have eaten yellowtail and bluefin Sushi literally right off of the boat. Great little sushi spot.
This was my first omakase experience, and what a way to start. The fish itself was of remarkable quality, the preparation added fabulous flavors, and everything was served at the perfect temperature. Can not wait to dine again.
Excellent food and service. Great menu and variety. Highly recommend!
The fusion-style sushi is OK and fun, but WAY too overpriced for "creativity." I've been to the top sushi restaurants around the world, and the price is quite alarming for what you get. All in all a good experience, but over-hyped
It is not worth nearly the $ they charge! All the stories that they give trying to justify the price do not and can not do it. Live in the city most of my life and have seen many many more better places for half the price. Felt more like a scam!
Delicious sushi. We opted out of the tasting but still enjoyed the sake, sushi and rolls
Not as good as it used to be. Prices are higher than before, but quality has gone down a little.
Lucky we got in on such short notice Sushi of Gari offers Amazing and creative sushi
Fresh , delicious, never lets you down
