For us, there are few culinary pleasures in life that exceed sushi bar swagging at Sushi of Gari, watching an old master fish sculptor slice up some heavenly creations destined for our bellies. Unfortunately, this Gari location is our least favorite yet.
The hostesses was pretty rude. Theyhad lots of empty tables when we got there at 6pm but when we asked to sit at a different table she said we can’t because she had reservations coming in. When we left those tables were still empty. The doors were open and Con Edison was drilling outside. For the prices you’re much better off going to Nobu two blocks away. Did they change the spicy scallop roll it used to be so much better.
Sushi of Gari in Tribeca is one of our absolute favorite restaurants in NYC after fourteen years of living here. We have only ever done the omakase which you must experience if possible. The atmosphere is press down and even plain, but the food more than makes up for it. Each bite is an innovative explosion of deliciousness. The service is good if not great. It is quite expensive and worth every penny for the special experience you will have.

Every piece of fish was sublime and gorgeously presented. Attentive staff in a tiny space that doesn't feel overly crowded.
I’ve been coming here for years - food was not as good as I remember it.
Sushi was mediocre at best. Setting was cramped and ugly. Over priced for what was presented. Not worth the trip seeing there are many better sushi spots within walking distance.
Love this place, great distinct sushi and service. Outside seating is nice in the Tribeca venue.

Not at all what we were expecting. Very sterile and no atmosphere. Service and food were good but compared to the Japanese experience we wanted very sad.
This is my family's second time eating here in less than a month. The sushi is amazing, fresh and served by a wonderful wait staff. Even the desert is incredible (mille crepes cake is fantastic). The place is small, not sure if there is an upstairs so if you are coming with children please be aware its small on the 1st floor. We, unfortunately, sat next to a family with 1 younger child who was loud and not well behaved. Fortunately, they left shortly after we were served our dinner. We were our own child who noted how disruptive the child was not Gari's fault. Only other pet peeve - wine by the glass is quite expensive even by New York standards. With all this said, we will return again because of the food and service are incredible.
We didn’t get our seats until 20 minutes after our reservation time. If not because I unhappily talked to the manager about the situation, we might wait for another 20 minutes. They should handle the situation better.

This place takes sushi to a new level. There are several locations throughout NYC. I've only been to this Tribeca location. The restaurant is small, tiny in fact. There is standard seating on the main floor and some outdoor seating. Upstairs there is seating at the sushi bar. I believe you have to get the Omakase tasting menu if you're seated upstairs at the sushi bar. I HIGHLY recommend it! The Omakase menu, though expensive, was outstanding. Creative and incredibly tasty selections prepared by a personal sushi chef. None of these items were on the regular menu. I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. Truly an amazing experience. Very highly recommended.
The food was delicious, actually exceptionally but unfortunately every employee of the restaurant was rude and had an actitud.
The rice was cold on one of my rolls and half of my sushi. An inexcusable amateur oversight and clear indication they do not care about quality.
servers were too attentive at the beginning and then not enough during the courses. Charged us the incorrect amount (too little) and took 20 minutes to recharge is the higher amount which is unacceptable
Sushi was excellent, my favorite was the tomatillo sushi, I don’t recall if it was yellowtail or albacore but it was great, and spicy. Salmon tomato and toro tofu are the most popular and also good. I’ll be back!
Best meal of my life. Had omakase. It was $650 for the two of us but amazing.

Good quality neighborhood sushi, but they use powdered wasabi w sushi ... disappointing cost cutting when meal already fairly pricey. Service was prompt and attentive.
The Omakase was delicious. We had a wonderful time at the sushi bar with the chef. The service was excellent, every time our tea was almost empty the waiter was there to fill us up. When you make reservations let them know its for Omakase, it is timed at 2hrs. They have some unique pieces created by the chefs here. Will come back for sure!

I’m fortunately the lady at the front had as much personality as it did piece of wood. Not so much as a hello Just waiting while she was on the phone and then when we left not so much as a thank you or goodbye. This is extremely important. It lets the rest of the restaurant down. By the way for the amount of money paid I think it could do with a new carpet some new seating and a slap of paint
We were so looking forward to the omakase after reading reviews however we were very disappointed. While the fish was fresh, the selection was very typical, unimaginative and more importantly not extremely well presented. Every course and selection of sushi was identical, no creativity. I would not recommend,
Sushi of Gari's Omakase is wonderful, and the service is beyond. I noted on my reservation that the booking was for a birthday dinner and they accommodated the request with a candle at dessert without me having to remind them at dinner.

They forgot to prepare our food. Tried to compensate not charging the desert. Small space. Food was not good. Very expensive to the space and quality of food.
The food was very good. We did the omakase and all but the last dish was to our liking. It is expensive and the Valentine’s Day terms were different to what I signed up for but overall it was a good experience.
The food is always amazing at Gari, I always had it on my list when visiting the city. The service can be improved.
We had the omikase (aka chef's choice) upstairs at the sushi bar. We're sushi lovers and the sushi and sashimi were excellent! Omikase at Gari is pay-by-the-piece at about $100 for 10 pieces. The chef will keep making until you tell him to stop, in our case we were a little slow and got more than planned but that last was a great finish. Most of the selections highlighted the fish, but there were a couple like one with a tomatillo topping where the additions were the star.
The quality of the sushi here is always outstanding. They also have the BEST rice of any place in the city, whatever their process is, is different than everyone else because the rice has a sticky yet lovely texture and taste, not your typical sticky sushi rice. We love it here and the other locations as well.
One of the higher end options for sushi. Definitely a good experience with the omakase flavors!
I go to Sushi of Gari all the time and this time I was incredibly disappointed. The rice was like supermarket sushi rice, incredibly cold and chewy. I am now not going to return. The fish was nice, but the rice ruined the whole experience.
Too cramped would never go there again
Some of the best sushi I've ever had! I have to be gluten free - so I was unable to do the tasting menu - but everything else on the menu was fine! They brought me gluten free soy sauce! The rolls, nigiri and sashimi were spectacular! My husband and I especially loved the crab stick nigiri and tuna sashimi!
The Sushi is absolutely amazing! From the Shumai Dumplings and Miso Soup to the Nigri Sushi and Sushi rolls, everything was delicious!. It was so fresh, and perfect. The only issue we had, is the place is very small. People are almost on top of each other, not much space to move, but the food is worth it.
