Sushi of Gari - Tribeca Ratings and Reviews
This is a repeat special occasion lunch spot for me, and where I bring clients who are in town and who are looking for excellent sushi. Today's lunch was a bit disappointing, with service being the most significant aspect of that rating. When salads were served and one patron asked for additional dressing, the dressing didn't show up until the salads were almost finished by the other patrons. The sushi (two orders of Special Sashimi, one Gari Tuna Tasting) were a bit messy in their presentation, the shari fell apart when one diner went to pick up the tuna nigiri and the spicy tuna maki in the Tuna Tasting, and they forgot to include the fresh wasabi that was requested with one of the orders. Normally the omakase experience upstairs more than satisfies, but I'm now thinking about going to Nobu in FiDi for my next business lunch after this last visit to Gari. I hope they improve, because the quality of the fish at Gari is far superior, but when taking clients to lunch, the whole package has to be there.
We went to Sushi of Gari for my husbands 50th birthday. The food was delicious! My husband loved the omekase dinner. Service was excellent as well. When the restaurant called to confirm my reservation, they asked if we were coming to celebrate a birthday, and brought him a beautiful dessert with a candle which was such a nice touch! I would definitely recommend Sushi of Gari to my friends.
Ordered special sushi dishes for the table - some hot, some cold. One was oyster caserole, which takes 20 mins to prepare. They held up bringing order to the table until this was ready, so although that one was warm, all of the other "warm" dishes were cold (not so great).
Went there for a business dinner on a client. We had an avid sushi fan and a vegetarian with us in the group. Both rated the food as mediocre although the service was very nice and polite. The place was quiet enough to have a conversation. Nothing about the mean would make us rush back there...
I am a big fan of Sushi of Gari on the upper west side, so I thought I would try the downtown restaurant. In a departure from the usual restaurant rule in New York, in this case the UWS has Tribeca beat. The sushi is impeccable at both locations, but the downtown spot is cramped (you have to squeeze by one of the tables to get to the bathroom), a little bit shabby -- there is a giant TV screen on one wall, as if it were a sports bar, but no other decor -- and, and surprisingly noisy when the doors are open in good weather. Also, the service was noticeably slow on a Sunday evening. We could see the plates of sushi coming up the dumbwaiter (apparently the kitchen is downstairs, meaning you cannot see the sushi being made), but none of it was ours.
It was my second time there and just like last time, amazing food! This time we sat at the sushi bar upstairs instead of at a table downstairs (was a bigger party then) . We went with the Chef's special. Loved every piece. Great service. Very comfortable and the waiters are great to make sure they don't intrude on conversations - while making sure you have everything you need. Great work! Can't wait to go back...
Sushi of Gari in Tribeca is one of our very favorite neighborhood go-to date places. The only way to experience it is upstairs at the sushi bar for omakase. Granted, it isn't a cheap date, but the excellent fish abd brilliant flavors completely justify the cost.
Their UWS location is excellent as well. I don't find the others quite up to snuff.
Really good and creative sushi, no question. But not that kind of sushi that blows your mind not for this price...it's a glorified sugar fish. Incredible the fat tuna and the fluke with truffle oil. Quality is good. However, (a) for the price they charge they can't stand the competition with places like Sushi Inoue, Sushi Nakazaua or Kosaka and (b) they are non transparent with the price. They tell you they can't give you a price for the omakase because you have to sort of compose it yourself and instead they do its about 110 per person (not bad at all) except that it's 12 pieces, so you have to add more. Had it costed 250-300 I would have been really impressed, for 500 I can find better, sorry Gari.
