Sushi of Gari - Columbus Avenue

This place has good omakase and sake. For something simpler, go elsewhere
The sushi at Sushi of Gari is superb, sometimes (e.g., the tuna) sublime. Unfortunately, it is VERY expensive. That may come with the territory of having such extraordinary sushi, but it's important that diners are aware of this price level. You get what you pay for, as they say. What pleased us less, though, is the fact that the servers are clearer instructed to try to "sell" the more expensive options. I don't need to be asked twice whether I wouldn't prefer the fancier sushi assortment (I didn't), or, again, twice whether I wanted desert (I didn't).
Perfectly good sushi/sashimi, but they haven't changed anything in years, while the rest of the sushi world has been passing them by.
Top notch sushi at a price a notch or two below some of the sushi "temples" downtown. But sometimes I miss the hush and silence ---Gari is surprising busy & noisy, often filled with families and kids.
Great food, nice people - twice as expensive as Ten-Zan and definitely better, but not twice as good.
Terrific sushi is money is no object. But figure $100 a person unless you have them choose their special menu - $120 plus drinks and tax and tip, so maybe $800 for four.
A favorite place of mine when we visit NY. Wonderful staff and the omakase is always top notch.
love the food
really special ang creative
Just one of the best sushi restaurants around!!
The food at Sushi of Gari is excellent. However, recent changes in management and reservation personnel have made my recent experience a very disappointing one. The most recent one: I called weeks in advance to reserve a large table for my family. I was told I could not, unless very single person ordered the Omakase. I could not commit to that given 3 children joining in a party of 9. We had to eat at separate table. And the family that was sat together at the table I had called to reserve did not have any Omakases. I ended up ordering 6 OMakases and spending close to 2K for the two meals. Management offered no explanation---but a rude silence---when confronted with the unfair treatment.
Restaurants should value the business of long-standing costumers and impose policies that are applied across the board. Current management is rude and inconsistent. It makes a difference.
Sushi of Gari lives up to its name and the creativity that it promises – their omakase course was crafted innovatively and built off of the traditional Japanese sushi experience. Far from simplistic, this $120 Omakase course may not have the best value, but it certainly guarantees a fresh experience that anyone can enjoy.
Very fresh sushi and attentive staff. We did feel rushed though. Pricey.
Disappointing. Neither the Gari Special sushi plate or a cucumber maki sushi were fresh. We suspect prepared the day before.
Very fresh sushi and nice presented. We didn’t try the Omakase as we weren’t very hungry and didn’t want to spend $120 pp and not fully enjoy it. But a very authentic Japanese experience (having just come back from Japan a couple of weeks ago) even with the tight tables. Sake choices were good.
Ordered the 12 pc. omakase, and several other dishes. Omakase was not very tasty, would have preferred to have plain, better quality fish. Even after ordering several other dishes, still hungry after spending $380 with tip for two people, without any drinks. Absurd! I could have had a better meal at numerous Japanese restaurants for around $100. And they are rude, didn't replace a small glass that fell off the table and broke on the floor even after being asked. And refused to seat us at the Sushi Bar, although not one person was seated there when we walked in.
Post wedding dinner
Good food but way over priced
Good food, very fresh fishes and a nice atmosphere. Some of the sauces were a it too fancy for my liking but overall I enjoyed it.
Enjoyed the sushi , ambiance and service.
Go there for the sushi, which remains wonderful after all these years, not for the bright and tight setting.
Was ahead of the curve with signature rolls like tuna with creamy tofu, chopped eel, mackerel and shiso. Omakase is expensive but less so than other similar spots; takeout solid.
Super duper expensive but amazing
A friend who dined there regularly suggested what to order-it was not on the menu. I ordered it and my dinner was delicious. My 3 friends ordered off the menu. Their food was not good. How do you mess up a spicy tuna roll?
Sushi of Gari has reliably good to great sushi/sashimi. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is how they treat you - it is almost like fast food sushi. Very little of the beauty that you have with other high end sushi restaurants. Years ago, they were one of the best around. Then new places opened that were better and they were able to compete on price - more value. Now that they raised their prices, they are less competitive on price and still don't deliver the same experience. However, some of the fish was outstanding, and the restaurant was packed on a rainy Sunday night, so the market is liking what they do just fine.
Delicious food that is solidly based on highest quality ingredients and expert technique. Creative innovation that is not gimmicky or heavy handed. Beautiful presentation, very attentive staff, very pleasant room. We were there at lunch, so the room was both full of light and the noise level was completely unobtrusive- the room was probably somewhat less than full but over 50% occupancy, I would think. Lovely experience!
We settled on trying out Gari's Sushi excited for the experience. The assorted sushi was incredibly presented and decadent. 10/10 experience, and the mochi was the cherry on the top!
Not as good as usual but great Server from Chile
No i dont hAve time
Good sushi at a ridiculous price point. We got the preset platter of 8 pieces. Some of the pieces were interesting while others had so much on it that you could not taste the fish at all. Then we tried some other pieces: foie gras was not great - the meat was too dry. The spicy clam hand roll was good, the Gari Sake was excellent but again overpriced.
The decor looked like an outdated hole-in-wall sushi joint. Overall, I expected something special but it was just “ok”.
In summary - decent sushi but not at this price point. Could do much better for a $400 sushi meal
Amazing sushi and sashimi as always, and staggering prices as usual too. These are downtown premium prices on the UWS. But a great meal.
You can't go wrong with Sushi of Gari's omakase. It's the closest thing you can get to culinary heaven! I can't wait to be back.
Awesome sushi and Japanese food
never a bad visit to this spot! always recommend gari to all friends & family!!
Really good food, expensive. Noise level was over the top
This restaurant is way overpriced trading on creativity that is not nearly the level it should or could be
Good but not great. Left full and satisfied but wasn’t blown away. Worth a try
Very expensive for such a low key place. Food is quite good though. Service was slow with far too much time between courses.
You don't go to Gari for the ambiance. The sushi/sashimi is outstanding. Hard to find any Japanese prepared fish that is fresher or tastier than Gari. Make sure you have plenty of credit on your Amex, because the prices are in keeping with the quality. Well worth it, though.
Waitress was rude
Creative raw fish preparations that taste ok, but painful, ear-shattering noise level. Had to use noise cancelling headphones to prevent massive headache. Gracious service.
Terrible experience. Service was so rushed that we were out in 50 minutes. Not even had they brought the edamame and the soups and the starters were packed there. One minute later they bring the main sushi dishes and everything was there! Not even in a fast food restaurant we would have been so much rushed.
The food as usual was delicious but the experience was bad. If you have a restaurant and you charge what Gari charges you expect a dinner experience at the same level.
Not what happened. When we complained to servers and the manager they hardly apologized and did nothing to make up for the poor experience.
