Surf Spot Ratings and Reviews
Well we have been going here since it opened and it continues to slip down in service. Waiting 45 minutes to get a glass of wine and another 45 minutes for food. Brought our own bottle of wine and asked for glass which she brought us in about 15 minutes but then put them on the table and walked away. Did not open the bottles. About 10 more minutes she comes by and we asked to please open the bottles which she did but did not pore them simply walked away. Seems to me that everytime we go there and its busy expect to wait 45 - 90 minutes for food?
I've been coming here since it opened. And so thankful to have this gem in close-by.
It should be so great! Such potential!
Fantastic outdoor area. Decent wine selection. Tasty bites.
But. The service is wildly inconsistent. And it can be just plain bad. Unless you get lucky, then it's great!
Food is good. Probably need to change up the menu a bit.
And let people know if it's Sunday afternoon and you normally serve brunch, but are not serving brunch that day. Or tell a table the specials. You know, little things. That people care about.
I'll keep going b/c it's close and we want to support local biz. But definately isn't our "go-to" place.
I checked in with my reservation at 6:30 for 4, but it wasn't noted. Also, I found out you need to tell them in advance if you want outside seating, otherwise you have to wait. We were seated immediately at our reserved table, but service didn't come for several minutes. He apologized took our wine order then we waited 15 minutes before that came. Another 15 minutes then our order was taken. Lots of large groups came at once. Menu is limited but Surf Spot offers interesting dishes and everything we ate was good. None of my friends had been there before, this was probably my 6th time. You can't be in a eat and run mode, this is lay back and drink place. We were out the door at 8:15 pm. A little longer than expected but overall we had an enjoyable experience, but can't help but tell people to remember service is slow.
Surf Spot has some fab menu items with nice indoor and outdoor atmospheres. The small plates are great appetizers and I love all of them. The fried squid and artichoke with lemon aioli dip was the bomb (that's current slang for excellence)! Pizza was enough for two and while a bit heavy on the cheese, was balanced and perfectly baked. They have a sneaky way to get kids to eat brussel sprouts: shred them and hide them inside mac and cheese with bacon! This spot is a local favorite. I recommend the fish and chips!
We booked a reservation through OpenTable a day before and the restaurant even called us to confirm our dining with them. I thought that was great. We arrive at the restaurant, and the server didn't arrive to take our order. We had to flag someone to take our orders, THREE times! Then someone finally got our order and she had to come back to repeat it as she didn't wrote it down. Our waters arrived more than thirty minutes after we sat down even though we asked for it before the lady sat us down in our table.
The food arrived 50+ minutes after we ordered. Nothing special with their food. It is greasy. Though the pineapple pork belly was yummy. When we ordered dessert, I had to asked for the bill, so it won't take another thirty minutes to get it back.
The dessert was ok, we ordered butterscotch pot de crème and mudpie. The pot de crème is good, mudpie is too much whipped cream.
Overall, if you want to wait for about two or three hours to get your food, sipping a mason jar.. then this place is for you. If not, then there are better restaurant in the area other than this.
We've been here several times for lunch, weekend brunch, dinner. The food is always very good. Sometimes the service can be a little slow, but that was not the case this time. Our drinks and food came promptly. It was taco Tuesday and we opted for tacos. Mine were fish and they were yummy. Perfectly cooked: tender and delicate on the inside and nice and crunchy on the outside. My husband had beef tacos. A little spicy for him, but he ate all three! We split the butterscotch pot de creme for dessert and it was wonderful! We were seated near the bar and the noise level was pretty high, but we could still have a conversation.
Total disappointment: had been there several times in the last few years, and used to love the ecletci menu, well it is changed to burgers/pizza/ nothing stands out, there was nothing I wanted to eat. We got seated and the hostess says,it will probably be a wait for your waitress as she is very busy, REALLY??? so we sat, looked at the menu and about 5-10 minutes went by, no one came to even take a drink order and worked out because we ended up leaving. I used to dig this place, but wont be going back now.
Our group of 5 all were happy with our food ( poke, kale salad, fried calamari, ribs, burgers) and cocktails (Manhatten, scotch and soda - admittedly hard to mess up!) and beer. We had great service - and I think our group was somewhat annoying ordering one drink at a time, having lots of questions also one at a time. The server was helpful and cheerful the whole time. We'll be back for sure.
Service is the big issue. Our waitress forgot to input my child's order. She rarely came to our table to check up on us as well. Wish the owners of this place hire applicants that have experience with taking orders, follow through, etc. The food is good though.
*Positives: Service has improved, it's a great place for families, and music.
*Negatives: Food is still mediocre. I asked for well done burgers , received both medium :( and the glass my mimosa came in, at first I thought it was a joke, but it was not. Must have been like 4 ounces. It was Mother's Day for God sakes :) hook a mama up. Sadly, the free dessert was blah.
If you don't enjoy a gooood party then Surf Spot is not for you. Children, dogs, a volleyball area, deck chairs, a small stage with a band are all a part of the mix. We went to check out Pacifica and have a good lunch. We had to wait for our reservation seating, but there was plenty of outdoor seating and the band was just setting up. I sampled their Bloody Marys, virgin and otherwise. The time flew by and soon we were eating. We had Spam musubi, Fish & Chips, and a hefty half pound burger. Delicious!
I had eaten here before and was very impressed with the quality and taste of the food. The night I was there we had the calamari and chokes which was awesome. The kale salad which was recommended by the server was awful and we did not even finish it. The pizza was good but all we could taste was the mushrooms and nothing more.
Hoping it was just a bad night but for what we paid I was disappointed
The restaurant has a great outdoor seating area with live music on the weekends. I came here for Sunday brunch and was not disappointed. My one minor complaint is that the brunch menu is way too small. Mir only had 5 options or so, so I had to order off the lunch menu. It would be great if they expanded the breakfast/brunch items.
Had a lunch meeting and was very happy with the ambiance and the service. The food was spectacular. Three of us had the Surf Spot Burger, which was so big and juicy, I ended up cutting it in half just so I could manage it! The french fries are delicious, and our fourth had the short ribs, which looked absolutely yummy.
We ate around noon, which is when the restaurant opens, so there was plenty of silence for a meeting.
I have been there during dinner hours, and even though the restaurant was full, you could still carry on a conversation at the table and be heard.
This is a very family friendly place---the outdoor area has a volleyball court and things for children to keep themselves busy. There are blankets for outdoors at night, since Rockaway Beach can get a bit chilly; this restaurant is on the other side of Highway One, but the ocean is visible.
I would DEFINITELY recommend this fine dining establishment for all ages.
Even though we reserved our table, we were seated on not the best spot of restaurant, which is fine with us.
The food is in a big serving. We ordered appetizers, sloppy tots with bacon(so good!) and calamari( with orange peel?? and artichoke.. they aren't my favorite and the sauce is a bit strong in flavors ). We are so full with the appetizer we wished we didn't order fish and chips which is nothing special in it.
The dessert however is so good. The butterschotch pot de creme is heaven. We will definitely be back just for this!
I wasn't very hungry but ordered a mushroom pizza (California Shroomin) and my favorite truffle garlic fries to share. Yumm, they are so good. Their fries were small cut but they taste really good especially with the garlic. The pizza was tasty with basil.
It wasn't very crowded as it was weekday but weekends tend to be very loud!
I enjoyed it very much.
I made a spontaneous trip down the coast with the sunset covering the ocean to this unexpected little place, Surf Spot. I took time to choose my choice of seating: on the front porch, alone; on the patio - it was too cold; or inside among the people. Inside was a delightful choice sitting next to strangers available for a few words of conversation about the food.
I raved over the Pizza - Gluten Free - covered with three exotic sounding mushrooms, fresh herbs, caramelized onions and Brie. With a lovely wine, recommended by my server, never have I enjoyed a pizza more!
I added desert, the famous Butterscotch Pudding and ate it all even though it really needs two people to share. It was good but I enjoyed the pizza so much that dessert was unnecessary.
I will return to this charming, casual place with an upscale menue.
Surf Spot hits the spot for providing a casual and fun environment with a slection of menu items that are a notch above most casual places with respect to creativity and quality. The only miss is that service at times can be a bit slow, depending on who your server is.
We had a great experience at the Surf Spot. It's our "go to" spot when you have kids in tow. Our table was ready as soon as we walked in the door, 10 mins. earlier than our scheduled reservation. Our dinner dates had not yet arrived and were running late, but our server got right to drinks to tide us over. Outdoor and indoor areas were packed and hoppin', keeping our server very busy, but as we waited for friends for 20 mins., she never forgot we were there. Once able to order, she warned us the pizza oven was backed up so she ordered our children's pizzas ahead of our food, perfectly timing our meal. Willing to wait to receive great service? I recommend the Surf Spot. Worth the price to have good food and occupied kids!
We have been in Pacifica twice in the evening and both times when we asked friends where to go for dinner this place is the first suggestion. We have a 1 year old so maybe that's why people have suggested it to us. The food? Ugh, menu is all over the place & everything is just mediocre. The service? oh my gosh. Both times we've caught ourselves looking at the clock about 10 times wondering where our drinks, appetizers, water, water refills, food and check were. Not one time did anything arrive promptly or at a reasonably expected time. Waited a full HOUR before any food arrived. Our toddler was hungry and crying/begging to EAT by the time it finally came. We won't be coming back.
the food was good...portions spot on...an upscale local dive environment...dessert was wonderful (and shared)...parking was great.
the service could have been better...my steak was a little to tough for my liking...peaceful after the loud adorable little children left...
it is 10 minutes from my home...I will go again ☺
Overpriced food which was terrible, I spent 100 bucks on dinner and could not eat 96% of my meal. The service was terrible the food was not cooked properly and terrible. Awful, awful, awful; the place has potential however it seems like this bar tried to take on more than it can chew. When I spend 100 on dinner I expect to leave full or at least content with my meal.
