The server/busing service was overwhelmed during the New Year's Eve dinner. The initial contact order by the server took 10-15 minutes. The server took awhile with the bread and did not adequately pay attention to clearing pot of mussel shells.

Our meal was excellent and the wait staff was very friendly, but the few people working on New Year's Eve could not make up for the 3 people who failed to show up to work that evening.
We heard they are closing and are hoping that is not true. With adequate wait staff the place would be amazing.

Decided to try this Belgian restaurant as our "go-to" Belgian restaurant, across the street, was packed. What you first notice is a lack of service. There was no one stationed at the front desk as it appeared the bartender and a waitress were, when possible, helping sit those who came into the restaurant.

As the wait staff seemed busy with other stuff we were able to have all the time in the world to review the menu. I started with the lobster bisque. It came out very hot - it apparently was so hot that the lobster was overcooked to a rubbery mess. And the broth was as thin as water and as tasteless as watery tomato soup.

I had the bouillabaisse, my wife had the mussels and our friends had the steak frites and the salmon. Again, the bouillabaisse was near boiling, and the sea food as overcooked. My wife's mussels were also overcooked. It appeared that the restaurant was conducting a science experiment to determine how close to boiling they could get the dishes. The salmon was bland....but the steak frites were ok, and likely the best dish at the table.

I think they are were either short handed and would leave stuff on the stove, get orders, seat patrons, and hustle back into the kitchen that nothing got done right. Nice folks, and the beer selection looked very interesting, though. And the bar had sports playing on the TV....my guess this is an ok neighborhood place for hanging at the bar and enjoying a beer.

We've celebrated a couple of birthdays at Sur La Place, and we love it. The food is delicious, the service friendly and thoughtful, and the beer list is awesome! Try their house-made sausages and grilled duck pate with cherry sauce! Mussels better than any other place in town. And don't forget dessert -- chocolate mousse with the raspberry lambic is a great pairing. Dessert beer. Who knew?

I've been to Sur La Place several times in the past and enjoyed the food and quiet ambiance. The mussels this time were the worst I've ever had anywhere; they were so tiny there was almost nothing to eat; just a lot of shells.

Sur la Place was a little disappointing. The service was slow and the wait staff just seemed overwhelmed in this relatively small restaurant. Three of us ordered mussels and they were smaller than expected and more empty shells than expected. My wife ordered hers with a mustard sauce and couldn't taste any mustard. I asked for mustard with my fries and they said they didn't have any. The people were nice but I don't think I would go back.

As a frequent diner to Sur La Place, we find the food to be quite good, however, there were only two waiters that took orders. One was the bartender, as well as, the manager. Although friendly, it was obvious that there was a shortage of wait staff. Once seated we waited 20 minutes before someone offered us a drink from the bar. We are hopeful this problem area can be corrected soon, but we will wait some time to return.

Very disappointing evening. The A/C was out in half the restaurant but they seated us in the hot half without informing us of the issue. The restaurant was largely empty and they seated us next to a big table that was quickly filled with a festive group that made our conversation difficult. Even after the hot and noisy dinner, the management did not even acknowledge the possibility that we might not have had the best evening. On top of this the food was mediocre at best. The food might improve and they can fix the A/C, but they really need to work on the management.

My husband had the trout and said it was very good. He also had the lobster bisque and although he likes salt, the soup was too salty even for him. Too bad since he had enjoyed it during an earlier visit so maybe it was just the chef that night. I had the Belgian dessert waffle with creme Englaise. This was an outstanding dessert. One of the best Belgian waffles I have eaten. I wish the waffle had been bigger or that I could have ordered this as an entree. I will go back for that dessert.

Unfortunately nothing was said to me until the end of the meal - she didn't want to make a fuss, It had to do with ordering a salad with avocado which was omitted.
There was obviously a problem with the air conditioning as fans were blowing air but no explanation to us. Thought it would have been nice to have had someone address the problem.
But all-in-all a lovely evening. I had the mussels w/djonaisse (SP?) and thought I would have enjoyed it more if the onions were cut thinner....but the flavor was great.

We booked on a very hot July day, midweek. Reservation was for 7 PM, arrived and the restaurant had no air conditioning. They proceeded to seat us in a stifling hot room, with one fan operating propped up on the floor. This colored our entire dining experience. Mussel saffron soup, duck pate, and seafood avocado salad starters were all very good. The soup was warm and spiced without being overwhelming, the avocado perfectly ripe, the duck pate firm, sweetly accented with cherries. Two of us split the large portion of "snob" mussels which were too much! The fries, and mussels were absolutely delicious. Third diner had a sausage with a cabbage side, not large enough for a dinner meal. Chocolate pot for dessert. Overall the food was tasty, well-prepared, solid value. The service was attentive, except for the fact that we were sweating. I don't understand how a restaurant can operate in Washington when it's 95° outside without air-conditioning. We will be back, not until it cools down! If they don't get a service contract on their AC, I doubt they'll do very well in the Washington summers. As we had made a reservation, I would have expected them to call us and give us a choice as to whether to continue to dine or to come another day. That was my main disappointment.

This is a very nice place with very friendly staff and the best mussels in town. They also have a long and impressive list of belgium beers. In good weather, If you're lucky to get one of the two tables outside overlooking the street, the experience is even nicer, as the interior of the restaurant is quite dark even in daytime.

One of our go to places - food consistently good as well as the friendly service. I love the salmon and my husband is equally fond of the steak frites. Brussel sprouts and frites are exceptional! As good as as Et Voila across the street and not as noisy.

We have eaten several times at Sur La Place. My husband has liked each of the mussel buckets that he has tried. As a vegetarian I have eaten some very good sides. This time I tried a salad and was disappointed. The salad was described as having hearts of palm, apples and spinach. The salad was what I call "deconstructed". The "salad" consisted of four small half slices of heart of palm set in a square, a few spinach leaves inside the square, a thin slice of apple sitting on the top, for $10. I had the bread pudding for dessert. It also was "deconstructed": a slice of bread pudding on one side of the plate, a small amount of sauce on another edge of the plate, and a tablespoon of whipped cream along another part of the edge. These three components are what was described, and all tasted good, but definitely not enough sauce to spoon over the slice of bread pudding. The pudding IMO would have been moister and tastier if there had been more sauce to pour over it. Since bread pudding is one of my most favorite desserts, I have had it innumerable times in as many variations, but IMO, the best are moist with a delicious sauce that is spooned over in the kitchen or served in a small gravy boat at the table. We will return because my husband likes all the mussel choices. I will get vegetable sides-all the vegetarian ones I have tried are excellent, as are the garlic French fries--not a salad.

Had heard fave reviews of this place which serves Belgian cuisine, so we finally drove in from Alexandria, VA on a Saturday night. There are a couple of outdoor tables (maybe a couple more when it stays warm) and the interior is nice, charming, and cozy. Quite the beer/ale menu and also quite the mussels menu! The husband liked (and ordered a second) his pale ale, and his mussels dish. I liked my tangy veggie soup and loved the crabcake with asparagus--one of the best crabcakes I've had! And the wine nice too. We were too full for dessert. We will return again to this charmer.

Sur la Place is absolutely our favorite restaurant in the DC Metro area. We have mostly lived here for more than 25 years, but we did live in Antwerp, Belgium for three years a few years back. We love to take friends here - they are always impressed. This time, we had a friend visiting who lived in Antwerp when we were there. He was absolutely ecstatic over the food (we had lamb, fish, escargots, frites, Brussels sprouts, endive, pot au chocolat . . .). He kept reiterating how he had not had food so delicious since we were in Belgium! We totally agree. SLP is always wonderful, but this time, they REALLY "hit it out of the park." Dank U, Dank U!! We are so very fortunate to have this neighborhood gem nearby.
