This is a special place. The view from this outdoor terrace is unmatched and the whole experience is worth the splurge. Our server, Timothy, was truly helpful in making great suggestions. The salads which didn’t appear to be that out of the ordinary were truly outstanding. Though not a fan of anchovies, these made the Caesar salad as did the generous portion of Parmesan shavings. We both had the filet mignon which were seared nicely and cooked perfectly to order and were accompanied by a choice of sauces, all delicious. We shared a maple creme brûlée which was also outstanding. With drink and tip, the tab was $250, but well worth the splurge for the meal, the service, and the spectacular view. Plan to arrive a half hour or so before sunset!
Our expectations for this restaurant are always high and, as usual, they were exceeded. Food and views were great and the service was engaging and excellent. We'll be back.
Excellent food and service as always. And you cant complain about the view either
We had a lovely evening, the view was perfect and the service was perfect! Doesn’t get any better than that!
Just an awesome view. They gave us a great table and really made my wife’s birthday special
Beautiful night on the Sunset Terrace. Space heaters were unobtrusive and made it very comfortable after sunset. Our waiter was very helpful and patient with our questions.
Food was mediocre- not nearly as good as expected and for the price I’ve honestly had better meals for half. The biscuits were very good but the filets were gray and bland , but they were tender. No flavor except we had some delicious black pepper sauce to dip it in. Brussel sprouts were very undercooked. Whipped potatoes had no flavor and tasted instant. Definitely great wine options which i appreciated- you’re definitely paying for the ambiance- which is beautiful. I recommend coming here for cocktails and appetizers for the view and not much more.
Menu was limited and the pork chop for the price was less than satisfactory.
Repeat visit, this time with son and his wife. Everything was again top shelf. Great drinks, appetizers and entrees. Desserts were great as well. One of the best views in Asheville the whole time. Always a pleasure, especially for special occasions
We were there on Mother’s Day, a party of 7. Sunset Terrace is a great location. The food was disappointing.
It had been 30 years since I dined at the Grove Park Inn, Sunset Terrace. The view was wonderful and the architecture of the hotel hasn't changed. There were a lot of people there, I think that was the downside but that is healthy for business. Worth the dining visit!
Hands down, the nicest outdoor dining in Asheville. Three of us went for lunch on Saturday, May 11. The weather did not cooperate, but the service and food were up to par. Two of us had Lobster Salads which yielded generous amounts of lobster. The Crab Cake Sandwich was very good, as usual. Wine and coffee; no dessert. I've dined here many times over the years; I find the food and service consistently very good. Our server, Michael, was friendly, efficient, and attentive while not hovering. The Sunset Terrace is always busy; be sure to make reservations.
Service great. View great. Food not so great. The filet mignon, while being overpriced, was wonderfully butter soft and tasty. My son's scallops were fresh and tasty. The rest could not be said of the appetizers. The crabcake was decent, but lacking in high quality crabmeat. The pork rillets were mostly fat, not very tender, and lacked any real taste or the candied effect that should have been there. The yellowtail sashimi was tasty. The joke, however, was the fois gras. The piece that I had almost required a microscope to find, it was so small. At $28, I was tempted to tell the waiter to take it back. But because we were celebrating my son's graduation, I decided not to. We did not have dessert. In summary, nice unrushed experience but spotty food, some great and some not so.
Food was not great but the place is a must see. Great views.
We had a terrific meal in the most awe inspiring places we’ve ever visited. The staff and service were top notch. The ambiance of the Inn lobby sets the stage for one of the most stunning views ever! What a fantastic place to enjoy a great meal and bottle of wine. We will be back!
Amazing place with the best view in the town. Our Server was super knowledgeable and suggested the best food.
We shared the elk dinner. It is pricey but was plenty for 2 with a side. We also shared the soup of the day which was fabulous. Lamb and lentils. A glass or two of red wine finishes this meal off perfectly.
Beautiful view. Food doesn’t compare to the Asheville food surrounding the Grove Park Inn. Lots of people visiting eating and there on pleasure— drunk and loud.
My wife and i moved to Asheville 18 months ago and during this time we've tried many of the great restaurants in and around the city. On this occasion it was our anniversary so we thought we'd try the Grove Park Inn and therefore booked a table at the Sunset Terrace. I'll try to keep this short - but the service and food was very average and what totally spoilt the evening for us was when my wife found a large rubber band amongst her medley of cooked vegetables and naturally this put us off our special meal. We were both very disappointed with the response from the staff and restaurant management and won't be going back. We spoke to the restaurant manager after the meal and i'll be placing our concerns in writing direct to the hotel management within the next few days.
Thank you for taking the time to offer us your feedback. We recognize that the proper quality checks were not reflected in your wife's meal and apologize for your underwhelming visit to Sunset Terrace. We have discussed your review and internal notes with our management teams and, although we have recouped your dinner, that is not the guest experience we aim to deliver. We hope you will give us the opportunity to show you both how we truly celebrate our guests' special occasions in the future.
Our server was exceptional and the food was very good. Unfortunately, there was a very large table of people seated near us and they were very boisterous. Their noise ruined the ambiance of the view.
Beautiful venue. Food is fine and service is good.
One of the best steaks we’ve had. Sides were just eh(risotto and asparagus). We were on the terrace, atmosphere, view and vibe are undeniably the best in the area. We’ll be back.
Ordered a steak medium rare. It was delivered well done. Sent it back and got medium well. For a restaurant that touts its steak, this is unacceptable!
Undeniably a great view. Staff is very coordinated and incredibly professional. Absolutely would return!
We took my sister and her husband here for lunch. Their first visit to Asheville, it was a perfect place to see the view and get a taste of the history of the city. Our waitress was beyond friendly and helpful and made our experience that much nicer
The view is gorgeous, we made our reservation to coincide with the setting sun. This time of year it’s a bit obstructed by the Vanderbilt wing, but nonetheless it was beautiful. There was live music which made it even more special.
The food was delicious! Our waiter, Brian, was extremely knowledgeable about the dishes and gave excellent recommendations. The view was absolutely breathtaking and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. I thought it was just a regular date night but it turned out to that my boyfriend had planned to propose to me and our waiter was so sweet and patient while he took pictures of us with the beautiful backdrop and even got the proposal on film. Truly a memorable experience and we will definitely be returning on our next visit!!!
We had a great meal, service (Jared) was impeccable, & view was spectacular (although sun was in our face prior to setting so bring sunglasses)! However, only negatives we’re that the prices have increased immensely since our last visit & sides are served in small dish (for 2).
haven't been in a while - was happy that the prices were not higher - still expensive but reasonable for the setting
Wonderful meal and overall a very pleasant experience. The view was outstanding and the Inn itself was full of character.
The view, food and service were top notch! But the lovely genteel ambiance is gone. It now feels like a busy conference center, which it is, with large noisy groups overpowering the space inside the lobby and on the terrace as well. Still appealing, but lower your romantic expectations. The vibes of a bygone era are bygone!
Beautiful setting but food was disappointing.
Scenery and setting was breathtaking. We arrived 10 minutes early for our reservation, and were curtly informed that seating only takes place at the appointed reservation time. We returned at the appointed time—were seated at a less than optimal table with a lesser view, even though better couples tables were available, and those tables were immediately filled after we were seated. Restaurant was informed we were celebrating a birthday, and we were told when we were seated to expect something special for dessert in celebration (which never occurred). Food is prepared perfectly to order, but presentation was unimaginative. Our server was attentive, but service was somewhat stuffy. Great wine list available, but be prepared to pay an extraordinary markup. While the view was incomparable, but there are better alternatives in the area with better food and service.
Loved the evening-was seated promptly and waited on quickly. Andre was super and our food/drinks were great. A little pricey but the memories made that night well worth it. Views beautiful - gorgeous wife of 35 years across from me and the mountains in the distance. Couldn’t ask for a better way to spend an evening. Make reservations-we got to sit on the balcony near the edge and I noticed those that did not reserve were seated more interiorly. We definitely had a better table/view
Enjoyed good, drink & setting. Our server seemed distracted.
My wife and I celebrate our anniversary at Grove Park Inn a lot - at least 5 years in a row. The view and ambiance at Sunset Terrace is always terrific. We always calculate when to get our reservation based on the sunset forecast. The service was top-notch as always. However, there were some food preparation issues which were off the mark this trip. My NY strip requested medium rare was delivered well done - not the way I enjoy a $50 prime cut of beef. My wife’s elk bone-in steak was virtually raw. This is the first true disappointment we have ever had at Sunset Terrace.
We love this place. Great venue, the Sunset Terrace offers stunning views, excellent service and a great and varied menu. Our dinner, to celebrate my wife's birthday could not have been better!
Loved the bartender. Forgot her name, maybe Susan from Westerville. We enjoyed speaking with her. Our server was happy and attentive also. Didn’t catch her name. Next time we’ll plan ahead and be there for sunset. Just a tad early.
