A truly beautiful setting with outstanding food and excellent service
The vegetarian meal of rice and vegetable was mediocre at best.
Service was great as was the food. Best sweet tea
It was a pleasant day on the Terrace even though we were seated just outside the kitchen. I'm not sure why because it was not at all crowded. We did order Bloody Mary's and couldn't drink them because of excess horseradish which the server and bar personnel worked out.
I have to say that we've lived near Ashville for 3 years, transplants from Santa Fe NM with 200 restaurants, several 5 star, and when we first visited the Terrace we were so enthusiastic about the setting and the food. However, we have visited a few times since, and with guests, and the last couple of times have been pretty uninspiring in regard to the menu and food prep. My husband conjectured that you have a new meat supplier, and/or management cutting corners. Maybe it's just us, but we're pretty desperate for a good restaurant and thought we'd found one for sure. We will continue to come but not as often.
The crab cake sandwich was excellent. The homemade biscuits with the honey butter was the best I have ever eaten.
There's nothing particularly wrong with the service, food, or setting. However, you do not get what you pay for. I could have spent half the money somewhere else and gotten a better quality steak/steak sauce. Not to mention, the chops do not come with any garnishes or sides. You are essentially paying for the view. Take your money elsewhere for lunch/dinner and then come here for desert or a drink. Again, service was great but the value isn't there.
The Sunset Terrace is amazing. We had a group of 7 and everyone was happy! We had great steaks, the game special was elk and it was unbelievable. The service was great and the view breathtaking. We also had lunch there and the fried green tomato BLT is my go to forever! crazy good!
We loved the view but the sides with our filet mignon were a big disappointment. We could have cooked much better mashed potatoes and asparagus ourselves.
Alex our waitress was literally the best server EVER. Friendly , super great to talk to, took the time to recommend all of the best places for dinner, drinks, and recreational activities such as hiking and drives. Cannot express how great everything was. We’ll definitely come back to Asheville and we’ll definitely stay at the sunset terrace hotel next time!!! Thank you Alex!
The service was rather slow and it took a long time to get our food but the view was amazing and it was very relaxing!
The setting certainly cannot be beat at Sunset Terrace. The views are stunning and even a summer evening is pleasant once the sun drops behind the building. While the food is delicious I did find it a tad overpriced. The steaks and other meat entrees do not come with sides. The sides which are for one person will add roughly $10 onto your already expensive entree selection.
Where to begin...
First of all, I asked our waitress to take a family photo of us, as we probably will not be coming back to this somewhat expensive restaurant with a fabulous view, and she somehow managed to get our photo without any mountains in the background and did not seem concerned as to whether we were happy with the photo or would be willing to take another one. "Oh well, " I figured. "We can get a selfie on the terrace before the sun sets."
Little did I know...
We arrived a bit late for our 7:45 PM reservation and luckily they didn't seem fazed. Now we know why. We were seated around 8 PM but after an initial drink order (some of us having water, more on that later) and our food order, we then sat for OVER AN HOUR without a peep from our waitress. No refill on drinks, including water. What?
I finally decided I needed a drink, as some in our party couldn't even remember what they had ordered at this point, so I attempted to flag down our waitress and basically had to paw at her sleeve as she passed on other business--hard to tell what--to get the wine list.
We thought perhaps they were just understaffed; however, every once in awhile a procession of servers would emerge with someone else's dinner, single file, that made my brother think of elephants walking one-by-one to Ravel's Bolero, only to disappear just as quickly to some nether region.
I suggested cutting the last biscuit in quarters and rationing it, in case our food never appeared.
We finally recieved our meal and the first refresh on drinks--water and wine--approximately 90 minutes after sitting down. With a little more urgency from the servers we would have been less put off and probably ordered more drinks--a win-win for everyone. Alas, that didn't happen. I actually chose my drink based on which one I thought might possibly arrive before midnight.
We never got the selfie on the terrace because the sun had set long hence.
Views spectacular; food good when it arrived. Pricey.
Service was very slow which some people may like. The food was very average but the ambiance was beautiful. We stayed at the hotel. I’m not sure I would run there if you were not staying there.
They did a wonderful job celebrating my sister's 45th birthday
We had an excellent meal sharing the filet and some scallops! Everything was wonderful!
The views were stunning …our server was attentive and helpful. The food was delicious and was creative.
Great views and great service.
The French Fries were a real disappointment for a restaurant of such a caliber - very dry and just blah.
This was for a birthday celebration - couldn't have been any more perfect. Food was wonderful, ambiance was perfect, 2 people dining - table overlooking the city.
First time there as we traveled through. Great locations, Great views and excellent food. Lex was our server...FIRST class!!
fantastic experience! We've celebrated many special occasions there!
Great views. Good food. Expensive
Great service and view was amazing. Food was poor for the price.
Thank you for reaching out, and we apologize that the food was not to your liking. Should you choose to dine with us again, we have shared your comments with the Executive Chef in an effort to improve.
The view was everything at this restaurant and our server (Stephanie) was absolutely fantastic in making recommendations and making us feel quite at home and not rushed. The drinks were well made. I ordered the filet and it was cooked perfectly. My husband really enjoyed his scallops. That said, our sides were not impressive -- mashed potatoes and brusselsprouts were both disappointing for the price and the high quality of the rest of our meal. They weren't bad per se, just not up to the same standards as the other dishes or the quality of sides we've had at other fine dining restaurants. Keep in mind, the hotel website says attire is resort casual, but most women wore dresses and men wore button ups and khakis...many wore a blazer. Also, it's called a sunset terrace but the sun actually sets on a side of the hotel -- not straight on. It makes sense, but we expected to see more of a direct sunset straight ahead. Still, it was beautiful setting and great food.
We sat next to a large family with very loud children, but other than that it was still nice. The Roasted Petite Chicken I ordered might have been a little too salty.
This is great for a special occasion. The view from the Terrace is incredible The food is quite good. In our case, the wait staff was exceptional and added to the experience!
I thought it was extremely overpriced. If I pay $150 for two entrees it better be exceptional. It was good but certainly not worth the price.
Thank you for reaching out. We will share your comments with the appropriate department leaders.
I would recommend Sunset Terrace...BUT...the food is just average. It's more expensive than it should be. I guess they're charging more because you get a nice view. The service was good. Our table was next to the waiter station, which is near the middle of the porch really (makes no sense) so we were witness to too much "in house" stuff from the waitstaff. Our party of four had trout (very small portion of trout and veggies and trout was too done), lobster cobb (good salad), burger and fries (burgers really should be cooked to order and are not so this was just too done & fries were just so so), and fried green tomato BLT (dry dry dry). The biscuits were good (especially when first given to the table and hot because they quickly got hard) and the dessert maple creme brulee was quite good.
Great experience, had one of the best filet mignon’s I've ever eaten!!!
Beautiful views, excellent meal, pleasant atmosphere! Loved!
We really enjoyed our dinner at the Sunset Terrace. The service was terrific, and the views were very nice. The actual sunset was behind one of the buildings of the hotel, so there are probably better times of year when the sun sets behind the viewable mountains. The food was good, but not amazing, and slightly overpriced, but that's to be expected when at a hotel/resort of this caliber.
I reserved a table for my boyfriend and I at the Sunset Terrace for my birthday a few months in advance, as it was a place I had been dying to go for a while now. We arrived early and as we were walking to our table, the hostess asked if it was a special occasion, and I shared that it was my birthday. We arrived at our high-top table that was tucked away from the sunset view and were seated. My boyfriend immediately noticed that there was a much more ideal table being cleared right at the edge of the balcony and politely asked the hostess if we might be able to be seated there. The hostess went to check and came back to hastily share that we could not be moved. We were bummed but not totally defeated. Our waitress was hospitable and attentive. When the food came, we were very underwhelmed. The food was bland, generic, and incredibly overpriced. The night ended with no birthday treat. At a nice, special--occasion restaurant like this one, I was very surprised that no effort was made to help make my birthday special. Needless to say, I will not be returning or recommending the Sunset Terrace to anyone.
Thank you for letting us know about your experience and may we wish you a very happy birthday. Our standard is to give each special occasion table a celebratory dessert plate, and we genuinely apologize for the service you received, as this is not the hospitality for which we are known. We hope you will choose to dine with us again and give us another opportunity.
The food and service was really good.
Gorgeous Views. Wonderful Menu and Delicious food. Excellent Service. Could not ask for a more delightful dining experience.
Beautiful view from the Sunset Terrace. We enjoyed brunch. I had a very unusual but delicious hamburger with cheese and horseradish slaw.
The dinner was spectacular. I had a special request of the chef to serve an item that was on their lunch menu (yes, we ate there for lunch the same day we ate dinner) and the chef gladly obliged. Our server was polite and friendly, but did forget a couple of our requests and we had to reminder her a couple of times of the items we were waiting on, but overall it was a fantastic dinner and you just can’t beat the gorgeous sunset view!
Lex was our server & she was awesome!! Gorgeous setting and scrumptious food from the oysters, entrees, veggies to desserts! A bit of a splurge but we all thought it was the best dinner experience we’ve had so far in our travels!
Visiting the Grove Park Inn is the ultimate day trip. It is close to my home, a breathtaking view of WNC from all windows while passing through the Inn corridors, a 5-star dining experience at Sunset Terrace, professional wait staff, the experience there is always that of great ambience and cheer...always inviting me to return soon.
The weather and view were spectacular and the food was surprisingly good for a hotel. I had the fried green tomato blt, a friend had the vegie burger and another friend had a cobb salad. We felt so privileged to live in Asheville and have this stunning venue available to us.
