SumoMaya Mexican-Asian Kitchen Ratings and Reviews
Hands down one of the best Japanese- Mexican fusion restaurants in the country! They have it down pat - the flavors are perfect in every dish. The craft cocktails are very good as well. The sushi is top-notch as is almost everything else on the menu. The edamame and shishito peppers are made to perfection. The staff is terrific as are all the chefs! The decor is also curated well!
Place has a great atmosphere and some of the best guacamole. However their sushi is substandard/amateur hour in comparison to Chicagoland sushi joints. We even sprung for the Billionaire roll as well as others. If it wasn't for the Guac the rating would be much worse!
This was our fourth visit to SumoMaya. It has always been great but this visit was a letdown. We requested our favorite table and it was given to someone else. Food was super spicy and not as good as previous visits. Our daughter was sick all night!! We will not be back.
Food was unique and delicious. Setting was fun. Music was WAY TOO LOUD to be able to interact with the people at our table. Fortunately, after complaints from us and other nearby tables, it was turned down a bit. Because the food was so yummy, I'd go again, but not on a Friday or Saturday night, when I understand the music is the loudest.
Reservation was at 6:15 and we weren’t seated till 6:35. We kept asking about delay and told waiting for people to get up then clean table before we could sit. Why have a reservation?
Other people kept getting seated as we waited. We had to be someplace by 8:00 so we felt rushed. Our dynamite lobster had like 3 small pieces of lobster nothing more. We mentioned this and waitress said ok umm I guess I can give you a dessert on us. I reminded her it was a bday celebration and it didn’t matter on the dessert. My friend said it’s not the $ it’s the disappointment. Nothing was done and the manager didn’t even come over to check on us. Other food we ordered was not as good as in past. Overall disappointed.
This Mexican and Asian restaurant has been on our must-try list for some time. We had a reservation for 5 people on a Saturday evening. We parked our cars, which is free valet, if you are unable to find a spot in the small parking lot. The decor is fun and bright. Lots of seating options available. The music was loud and energetic which we loved, but we were still able to hold a conversation. The waiter was informative, friendly and told us the food comes out as soon as it is cooked, which means not all at one time. The menu is vast. We ordered a few cocktails and then tons-o-food....everything was tasty, fresh and enough to share. Here are the items we devoured, in no particular order. Mexican Street Corn (tad spicy), Lobster Ceviche, Bacon Wrapped Medjool dates (OMG our favorite), Crispy Pork Belly Roll, Chinese Sausage & Pineapple Rice, Kimchee Fried Rice, Pork "Al Pastor" Pad Thai, Salmon Teriyaki, Pork "Al Pastor" Tacos (2), Steak Tacos (2), and some Grilled Jumbo Asparagus thrown in for the healthy aspect. The food was so good, we forgot to take pictures. We can't wait to return to try some of their other delectable menu items.
Arrived before our reservation, found a spot at the bar to order dinner and cocktails. It took 15+ minutes to get waters and menus. Service with the bartenders and food coming out of the kitchen was slow, 2 sumo rolls took 30+ minutes. After it died down, we received more attention but was aimed at getting us to leave. Very disappointed, loved this restaurant for years and wanted to show my friend a good time before I moved out of state.
We had a reservation and even though there were tables inside the hostess placed us at a table next to the outside plastic wall. It was late at night and it was freezing. The drinks are amazing. My favorite items on the menu are sushi, sea bass and the steaks.
Creative food, very interesting menu and great service.
Nick T has often been our waiter and he is terrific but the
team of service people work very well together. SumoMaya
brings the fusion of Asian and Mexican food to a new level.
We dined with a group of 6 which gave us the opportunity
to try dishes we had not in the past and everything was
My husband took me to to SumoMaya for my birthday. I had seen a review on Check Please and the food looked good. We like trying new things. We definitely liked the food but those plastic chairs did not feel sturdy and were a tight fit. Half way through the meal we asked to switch to the more comfortable upholstered chairs. It would have been nice if more of the selections did not have jalapeños but we would go back again. I will make a point of asking for more comfortable seating. As for the music it was really too loud and more like a night club. It was difficult to carry on a conversation.
We have been to S-M many times & have enjoyed it. This time was different. The food was not up to the usual standard that we once enjoyed & we basically ordered the same items.
The background music was definitely on a much higher volume than previous visits. We could not hear the server giving her hello & she could not hear us giving her our order. With all the upscale restaurants in Phoenix/Scottsdale it will be quite a while before we return.
