Summer Shack-Dedham Ratings and Reviews
While SS will not knock your socks off, they are consistent with their food. Desserts however leave a lot to be desired. We ordered the chocolate silk pie to share and when served, it had clearly been around a while. The filling was shrinking and separating from the crust. The bottom crust was literally the texture of cardboard. You needed a knife to cut through it.
For the price, you barely get your money's worth.
Went with 3 friends on Labor Day weekend (Sunday night). We all live in different towns, and Dedham is central, so it's great that Summer Shack takes reservations. The weekend bartender is so friendly and funny. When we had a friend running late, the hostess was really accommodating to us being seated 30 minutes later than our original reservation. Our server was fine. Seemed a little uneducated about the menu (didn't know if the Sea Bass was Chilean, Mediterranean or something else). Not a big deal though. Whatever it was, the sea bass was terrific!
We had fried clams as an appetizer. At $16, we felt that the portion was either very small or the price too high. The few clams that were on the plate were excellent. Our fried scallops were tasty and perfectly prepared. The lobster roll was average at best, lacking any taste similarity to many lobster rolls we have enjoyed throughout New England. Finally, our server presented himself with a somewhat cocky attitude that certainly was not justified by his performance. His inattentiveness with our table showed in his inability to even refill water glasses for ten minutes after being requested to do so. Note - the dining area was, at most, maybe one third occupied. Maybe that should have been a clue for us.
Had good selection of fresh fish as specials including Artic Char, Swordfish and Striped Bass. Plenty to choose from. We have had waiter before - always friendly and professional and laughs at my husband's humor. Artic Char was flavorful and served with a red pepper sauce - just enough to make attractive and flavorful. Nice cucumber salad was great summer treat.
A group of us went for my birthday. I had never been to the Summer Shack and I thought it was overpriced and more of a "chain" style restaurant - I was wrong! Their menu had a variety of dishes - from reasonably priced sandwiches to more pricier but gourmet style entrees. I ordered the Jasper's Famous Pan Roasted Lobster, it was delicious! Other dishes ordered at our table were a Clambake and Crab Legs. Everyone really loved their meals! Our server was awesome, she was attentive and friendly! We will definitely be back!
My wife and I have been coming to the Dedham Summer Shack every year for our anniversary. We have done this a number of times. We also occasionally come for a really nice dinner out. The food in general is excellent. It was no different this time. I have a couple of comments about things that would have made the most recent experience better.
This is a seafood restaurant. You would expect that a reasonable amount of lemon would be served with the meal. Not this time. We got one tiny piece for two different entrees. We found a waiter to get us a total of 3 more small pieces of lemons. I was wondering if they should send someone to the supermarket on the other side of the road to pick up a batch more.
One of the really nice things that Summer Shack serves on the side is their cornbread. On previous visits, there was a few pieces in the bread basket. This time, there was one small piece. We asked for more and our waiter got us more, so they clearly had more available.
Leaving the negatives aside, the food was excellent, very well prepared as we asked for.
The wine list is not extensive, which is fine, and the waiter was helpful in providing some additional information about the wine. The wine was good and reasonably priced by restaurant standards even at the upper end of white wine prices.
Our server was overall good.
We haven't been to a summer shack restaurant in years and so fondly remembered our experience at the Cambridge, MA one -- great food so we were excited about going to Summer Shack. The menu looked good and the server was so nice, but then the food came. Worst mussels we have ever eaten. In fact, each member of our party had one and then we couldn't eat any more. Our 17 year old daughter said that it tasted like the beach on a hot steamy day with the dank water smell. She got it right. We had been so looking forward to the mussels. Very disappointed. Our entrees were mediocre at best. We should have guessed that that was why there was hardly anyone at the restaurant......
Last time we were here the food was great, service wonderful.
This time, "greeted" by a surly hostess who told us we had to wait to be seated as our table was being cleared- which was this bizarre lie. The restaurant was half full at best - and the table we sat it had been set.
The food has gone downhill. Fried calamari and oysters were overlooked in old oil. The bluefish "be good" was oily and a mess. No veggies.
The pies were even bad - clearly frozen and with a commercial grade filling.
We won't be back.
Restaurant was crowded but not jammed. Noise level was festive but not intrusive. Service was excellent. Menu is not extensive but everybody found what they wanted and I think every plate was clear so I wasn't the only one who enjoyed dinner. Prices are reasonable. We ate and drank heartily, appetizers and oysters and cocktails and wine. $70 per head including good tip. You can get a good meal and a local brew for $30 per head including tip. It's a good value. It was my 2nd time in a couple months of recommending Summer Shack as s destination for a group. Worked great both times.
We went here to celebrate my husband's birthday. There were 6 of us, including a 5-year-old and a 7-year-old. This place is perfect for kids. I love that there is a kids' price-fixe menu for $10 which includes dinner and 3 dessert choices. The dinner choices for the kids were not the usual chicken fingers, hot dog, etc. My kids both got the grilled shrimp and liked it a lot. The Rhode Island style calamari was good, it had a good amount of spiciness, but was definitely greasy. The fish tacos were decent. My husband splurged and got the snow crab legs. They were quite expensive, but delicious. The Bermuda-style chowder was excellent - I would highly recommend it. All in all, it was a bit pricey, but good food.
I made a last minute reservation on Open Table, perfect. We arrived and our table was ready.
They were busy for a Saturday night and it took some time for our server to arrive and he was very friendly and appologetic.
We ordered an appetizer, kids meal and two adult meals. The appetizer did not arrive and the main course arrived quickly. We told our server the appetizer did not arrive and when we said cancel the order he stated he was going to rush it and the appetizer was "on the house"
Food was good, what you expect from Summer Shack. Portion size was good. There is a good kid's menu, though a bit pricy at $10. The restaurant was noisy and there was plenty of families.
We had not been back to Summer Shack because of a not so great experience. This dining experience put. summer Shack back on our list.
We had a small group after a high school graduation and booked Summer Shack for location, consistency and availability. Graduation ran late, we called to advise, and they had no problem holding our table for a fem minutes. We were given a friendly greeting and led right to our table. Food is a little pricey for casual dining, but I still feel the quality and consistency justify the price. Waiter was very knowledgeable on the menu, including the oysters for the night. They were accommodating to diet substitution requests. All that had lobsters and steamers loved them. They were sweet and were not overcooked, Fish and chips were tasty, The side of baked beans tasted like they were given care and attention. To me, well executed sides is a great indicator of overall quality and Summer Shack doesn't disappoint. This remains a go-to when in Dedham and I wouldn't hesitate to try one of their other locations.
The first time that I went there it was not very good and I was hesitant to give them another try. Today we did and what a difference. Had Monk fish which was amazing, Duxbury oysters which was great, and our waiter was top notch.
Totally different experience!! I now can't wait to go back
Fish is always as fresh as can be. Service is great and the night we were there Jasper White was in the kitchen - so we knew that every detail would be checked twice (at least). If I could have a few more fist choices, it would be even better, but we will continue to return for the quality and service.
We went to the Summer Shack to celebrate 3 birthdays. I thought the prices were high and the food didn't warrant the price. It was OK but no one said "this is delicious". Service was a bit slow even though the restaurant was not busy. All in all, I probably won't go back.
As a restaurateur, I am quite fussy about where I eat on my days off, and have decided to try the Summer Shack, as I was in the mood for some fresh seafood.
Upon entering for lunch, my guest and I were greeted and sat by a very friendly manager (Domenic?) who made us feel right at home.
Our server (Vinnie) was a seasoned pro, and was friendly, efficient, and knowledgeable. 3 qualities that only an old-school server seems to possess these days.
We tried several items on the menu: clam chowder, lobster bisque, Caesar salad, fried clams, Indian pudding, and chocolate cream pie.
All of the items were recommended by our server and they lived up to his recommendations.
I would definitely be back and will make sure to ask for Vinnie, as he is the type of server I love to have when I go out, but can never seem to find.
Overall, a great experience with great food, service, and ambiance.
We will definitely be back!
This was the second time I've gone to a Summer Shack restaurant and once again it did not disappoint. All of the food -- and there were nine of us -- was terrific and the service was outstanding. I can guarantee there will be a third, fourth, fifth, etc., visit there.
