Summer House Santa Monica Ratings and Reviews
Summer House is all environment and setting. The only reason I’ve been to this place several times is proximity to my house. The food is extremely mediocre, the service is slow and aloof, and the bill is always large. If you want a bright pretty space to have a glass of wine go for it but the food is sub par. After this last 4th visit I promised myself never again. If you order anything surprisingly the sushi is the best thing on the menu (tuna tostadas are really good)
This place was fun and had a great energetic atmosphere. It was packed on a Sunday night, but we were able to get a reservation for 6 that week without a problem. The drinks were good and the food was too! I liked the fresh decor and it did remind me of being somewhere beachy on a cold Chicago winter night! I would definitely recommend dining here!
We enjoyed wonderful service, which can be hard to come by in Chicago, and we truly relished the bright, summery vibes -- which weave through the decor, menu, drinks, and even the servers' uniforms. I was surprised to find that it is a more family-oriented restaurant, and most tables had 1-3 small children. The food was good but not great. My date had chicken and waffles with jalapeño gravy, but the gravy arrived cold and gelatenous in a minuscule creamer-style container. I ordered the Mexican hash browns and it was spectacular with the addition of gobs of Cholula -- the jalapeños had no spice for some reason. I highly recommend the kale lemonade.
Summer House is a neighborhood staple for me. While I enjoy the atmosphere and the food— my favorite part of this establishment is the service. Everyone that works there provides wonderful customer service from the moment you walk through the revolving door!
Unfortunately we were sat next to the kitchen and toilets. This area means you’re seated where you hear and watch the many staff standing and chatting, waiting for food to serve or to observe tables needing something. Much better tables in the restaurant so would like to not be sat there again.
Food was good, service excellent with many lovely staff, and general ambience is so lovely, I really like the space!
Have been here many times and it never disappoints. The food is always wonderful and the staff are very personable and attentive. It has been a little while so this may not be news, but I am soooooo glad they brought back the trout in brown butter. It is a reason to dine there. They had replaced it with a different preparation. The baked goods are always a must, too. Will certainly be back. Great place to go before a show at Steppenwolf. Location is very convenient.
Came here for lunch with my sister for a special occasion and it was SO wonderful. The glass ceiling allows the dining area to be completely lit and even though it was -3 degrees out, the inside felt like summer. The decor is so cute and very hip. Food: DELICIOUS. My sister got the Japanese katsu chicken sandwich on their "what are we cooking today" menu and I got the butternut squash soup recommended by our waitress. Both dishes were fantastic. A group next to us had poke and that looked amazing as well. You MUST hit up their bakery section in the front. We got 6 different cookies to taste and my favorite was their classic chocolate chip cookie. I will definitely be back to dine here again!
First time here and it definitely will not be my last. The entire staff was really nice and gracious. Absolutely no attitude. Our waitress was just awesome. She have great recommendations and service. The food was so delicious! I can’t say enough positive things about my experience. Can’t wait to come back. Definitely make a reservation. This place is very popular ❤️
Overall very good service and food; on the pricier side for what the dishes are. The server this time tried to up sell starting out breakfast with a cinnamon roll. What we got was bread pudding. I asked him when he presented the bill why the check said bread pudding and he said it was the same thing. I suggested that he say he is selling bread pudding NOT a cinnamon roll and NO they were NOT the same thing. Had it been bread pudding we would not have ordered it. He suggested a CINNAMON ROLL. Sometimes the bloody mary can be watery; not a fan of the santa omelette with turkey, seems liked rolled lunch meat in the middle of the omelette; breakfast tostadas, avocado toast, french toast, acapulco omelette, short rib hash all very good; noticed a price increase in a lot of these items...english muffins are great and zero proof cocktails again pricey for what they are.
(If they try to seat you in the front by the bar when the other main room is empty it is because they are trying to spread out the tables for the servers.)
Have had the poke bowl and soups for lunch.
Good neighborhood spot if you aren't on a budget.
This is a place that has some tasty food and some purely mediocre. The sushi and fish tacos were mediocre. The cauliflower appetizer was tasty but was very small and overpriced. The sautéed spinach was as over priced. The butternut squash soap was a winner as was the ice cream cookie. The room was totally over crowded and the service was poor.Being crammed in was a real unpleasant experience. 3 orders of sushi , soup, side of spinach, fish taco and one ice cream cookie desert no drinks totaling $ $157 with tip. Will not see me again Cookie bar was the only reason to come back.
Need a little summer feeling in the depth of a freezing cold Chicago winter? The lighting and atmosphere at Summer House really helps lift one's spirits. Having been at the real Santa Monica less than a week before we had a great comparison. The service was great and we were seated promptly even though we arrived earlier than our reservation. The menu is not very extensive, but the food we ordered was good and came quickly. Perhaps because we were there early pre-theatre and it was not a super busy night.
The valet is the worst in Chicago. If I have the same experience I had tonight that I had also two weeks ago...I’ll never go back. Someone needs to get on top of this and fix it ASAP! Who still uses paper ticket recruits? Get with the new app!
My 9 yo niece has celiacs disease so it's really hard to take her out for meals. Summer House is the perfect place to go for a gluten free, kid friendly meal. They get it. And we make sure to take her there whenever we are in town. The waitstaff is also really patient and understanding of all the questions on preparation etc. Food and ambience are great. Love this place.
