Chef Jeff Mahin’s California-inspired menu highlights simple, market-driven dishes with a focus on the wood-fire grill. From fresh Hawaiian tuna flown in daily to sustainably farmed Ōra King Salmon, guests will experience seasonal specialties made with fresh ingredients and local produce. To complement the menu, Summer House boasts an extensive wine list that focuses on the state’s distinct regional varietals and independent vintners, along with cocktails and local beer. The Market counter, shared with Stella Barra, serves a selection of fresh-baked pastries, sourdough English muffins and Mahin’s famous cookies, along with small-batch coffee and specialty espresso drinks. Extensive gluten-free and kids menus are also available.

Summer House evokes the breezy feel of a summer beach house with whitewashed wood, earth-toned tiling and warm hues. Glass garage doors along with a lofted ceiling and hanging string lights, bring the outside in – no matter the season.

Service was great and the food was excellent. The cookies are to die for. Our server was amazing (sorry can't remember his name, yikes). We were there for a client lunch and he made us shine.

Got the Halibut which the waitress highly recommended. She said it was in season and was the special. The halibut itself was ok. They served it with peas and edaname. Overload on both and really made the dish more dry than tasty. Overall not that great of a dish for how much they charged. My friend also got the halibut and we were both disappointed.
The three of us ordered the artichoke dip as an appetizer. It was sub par.
When the server brought the appetizer we had no plates to serve ourselves on. My friend grabbed three empty plates from another table. We had asked the server but they were taking too long.

Great Happy Hour! Good prices and options on the happy hour list. Staff were a bit slow in the bar area but the food made up for that. Go and enjoy, I certainly will.

Summer House is a beautiful restaurant, but that is all the positive I can say.
The service was terrible, like we were inconveniencing the waiter and when the food arrived, it was cold. We did mention the food was cold and the server basically just shrugged his shoulders and moved on.
We were celebrating a very special birthday for my sister and I was quite embarrassed of the food and service.
I will not be back!

We've been here several times now and am always happy with our meal. Lots of delicious dishes to choose from, great service and the bakery at the front has amazing cookies. I really enjoy the overall ambiance of the place and love going here for brunch on the weekends.

The restaurant is beautiful. The menu and food was fine, nothing to write home about. They have an opportunity for more variety in their salads. In addition parking at Pike & Rose was a disaster! While not Summerhouse's fault the shopping center is not ready for a lot of visitors, for those who are planning on eat there on a beautiful day/evening arrive with more than 30 minutes so as to locate parking.

It was maybe a bit louder than I would have liked however we sat far enough away where I could catch up with my friend. The food and the environment were on point though and can't say enough good things about the food! Also, the bakery/cookies that they have there are delicious and so unique!

For the first time, we were somewhat disappointed in Summer House. My companion's Tuna Tostadas were so spicy she could barely eat them. My halibut was overcooked and more spicy than I like. The fish was actually chewy. To their credit, Summer House has an open, pleasant environment and is generally excellent. They were very busy. Maybe that was it.

The highlight is always our server. This is a very happy place, clean, and light and fresh. I hope it says this way. Nothing like it anywhere in DC. People are coning from miles away to be transported to California. The desserts are worth the drive themselves. Eating there makes you feel good. The could improve by having a professional and upbeat greeter and seater though. That is not a polished point! Fix that, guys! This person should look sharp, dress well, be a good communicator and start the experience off right!! You are missing the boat here by not setting the opening scene right!

We were last at Summer House a couple of years ago to celebrate my husband's 50th birthday. It was fabulous! However, this time around, it was not so great. We came in to celebrate Mother's Day & the restaurant was definitely busy! Service was a bit on the slow side and the meal was frankly overpriced for the mediocre food. I think our family will be trying other area restaurants before returning to Summer House. One final note, the desserts here ARE amazing! That's the only thing I'd come back for.

I’ve wanted to love this place for so long because of their gluten-free menu but service at seating and coffee bar have terrible every time. Mother’s Day was the final straw. I’m finally just giving up.

I just don’t understand why you would change your menu so often when you’re a successful restaurant. Why does that make sense? Oh I like something, oh now it’s gone.

After many recommendations to eat here, my family and I decided to celebrate Mother’s Day on Saturday evening at Summer House. This was our first visit and based on the reviews, I was excited. Needless to say, I made the 6:30 reservation one week earlier, but, on the day of our reservation, I called Summer House to let them know we would be 5 minutes late. We arrived at 6:35, but had to stay in host line to check in. At that point of arriving finally to the host, I assumed we would be taken to our table, but we were not... we needed to wait an additional 15 minutes before we were sat. Now in full disclosure, on a Saturday night, the front area was packed and extremely loud with a large group of 7 year olds celebrating a birthday. I know for certain, the host wanted to get that party to their table ASAP!

Needless to say, the host appreciated our patience, thanked us and the evening was lovely! The service, our food, and how we were taken care of due to our patience spoke volumes. Thank you Summer House.. we look forward to our next dining adventure with you!

My recommendations are:

1) For the restaurant: Have a 2nd host stand for reservations only. I know the front area is small, but it would ease the anxiety of those who have a reservation and may think their reservation will be removed because they need to stand in line with people without reservations.
2) For the patron: arrive 15 minutes before your reservation. This will give you enough time to navigate to the host, check in and start to enjoy your evening... anxiety free!

It took 15 minutes and a trip to the hostess station to bring our server to the table. Extremely slow service (server brought wine to the table, then the cocktail, and 10 minutes later the beer) forgot to bring out our appetizer and our food had obviously sat under the heat lamps too long (steak was ordered medium rare and was medium well, pasta was dry around edges). Would never go back.

We went for a Mother's Day brunch a day early. It was our first time here, and frankly we were not impressed. One person ordered a dish with poached eggs and they were served hard-boiled. It took a while to get the server's attention, who took it back to the kitchen for a replacement, which took a very long time. Another person ordered a spinach and kale omelette which had hardly any spinach and kale. To top it off, when the bill arrived, we were charged twice for the dish that we returned to the kitchen, so I had to get that rectified. The rest of our party enjoyed our meals, but overall it was a disappointing experience.

Food: Fine. I had a spinach and kale omelette that tasted good but didn't have enough filling. My wife had the commuter sandwich which she enjoyed, but it all seemed like it cost way too much for the quality, especially since it was breakfast food.

Service: This was my first time here. My parents said they've been here several times, and each time they have to ask multiple times to get what they've asked for. For instance, my dad wanted cream and a spoon for his coffee he didn't get it until the third time he asked. They also forgot to bring out my side of bacon.

Ambiance: Really pretty in there.

Overall, I wouldn't go again. I didn't think it was worth it.

Service last night was horrible. WE had a reservation for four at 7. We got there at 6:55 and the other couple was a couple of min. behind us. But they wouldn't seat us because we weren't all there. Then when the other couple arrived, they had no table and we had to wait 20 minutes. It took forever to get a waiter and he brought drinks and we never saw him again. Finally we ordered dinner (four salads, and we waited another 40 minutes. Add that on to waiting 20 minutes to get a check and we were there for nearly 2.5 hours.

We were disappointed that we weren't seated until 7:15 when we had a 6:45pm reservation. The cook did not have hard boiled eggs for the Cobb Salad, which was unfortunate as it was advertised on the menu as being included. The tofo bowl was delicious, but nothing that I couldn't put together at home. The burger was the highlight of the meal. The wait staff was responsive and apologetic about the egg problem, and we appreciated him comping the glass of wine.

The tuna was suppose to be medium rare for big eye tuna added to salad; it was dry over cook - I should have sent it back. This is the second time this happened here - they really don’t know how to cook fish.

The service was delayed, then we were forgotten, then we asked for dessert menu, and she brought the check instead; 20 minutes later we found her, asked for the desert menu. After explaining that we needed to leave by 7:30, she moved quicker. We arrived and had reservation for 6. Salads and dessert only.

The food was very good - certainly above average - but the meals were overpriced. Scallops entree was delicious. Sides of asparagus and brussell sprouts were tasty but way overpriced for the table-side. Desserts were delicious, and the restaurant was generous with dessert for the two birthday celebrations. The night's special fish (halibut) was excellent.

It's too expensive for what you get - it's *fine* but for $34 the scallops should be pretty darn amazing; and for $32 the salmon should be too, but it was all just fine. (We also ended up getting a $40 something dollar bottle of wine that we literally saw in a wine store earlier that day for $12.) We all know restaurants in this area are expensive/sometimes over priced but I guess we just expected the quality to be better for the price. Again, it was fine - and, who knows, maybe it was just an off night - just seemed pricey to us for what you get.

We had brunch on Easter at Summer House. What a great way to spend the afternoon! We sat outside and enjoyed a beautiful spring day. The food was very good - I really enjoyed, and strongly recommend, my Hashbrown Eggs Benedict which feature hashbrowns instead of an English Muffin! I recommend Summer House.
