Suga's Deep South Cuisine Ratings and Reviews
Took my wife for New Years Eve dinner and had an excellent time. The environment was perfect for the date I had planned. My expectations were exceeded by far. This was our first visit to Suga's and we were not disappointed. The music was pleasant and not too loud. The ambiance was every bit as romantic as I had hoped for. I highly recommend this place for an upscale date.
Been eating the same distance Everytime I come here and this is the first time I've ever been disappointed with the porch chops until now. The rest of the meal was really good besides noticing the goat cheese salad was smaller than it has been before. The goat cheese shrimp were awesome and the Perfect Manhattan was made exactly that. Perfect
I’ve eaten here a 1/2 dozen times and this was the first time I was disappointed on multiple levels - had reservation and place was only 1/2 full yet still had to wait 10 mins for table. Took another 15 mins to take our food order. Glasses were often empty and presentation of food was rushed diner like. The worst part was they were having heating issues and it was freezing the whole time. The only thing that kept me from walking out was the food was absolutely amazing.
Last night was our first time to visit Suga's and we were extremely disappointed. Upon arrival, the maitre'd had problems finding our reservation (this is after getting a confirmation call earlier that afternoon). The heater system was broken and the ambient temp was less than 60 and we had to keep our coats on to stay warm. After we were seated, we were requested to move due the table being reserved for a group. The service was slow due to due waitress overloaded (she was managing 3 or 4 tables plus a large group). The kitchen was slow or backed up. We ordered the appetizer sampler to be split between 2 people, it came out 15 minutes later on one serving platter but no small individual plates, so we used our bread plates (which wasn't a problem because they didn't finish cooking the bread until we were 80% finished with our entree and it was raw in the middle when we finally got it). After the appetizer, the waitress brought our dinner salads, which would have been very good it they were a little larger - the portions were about that of a garnish. I had Suga's Seafood Pasta and my wife had the New York Strip and Scallop special for entrees. My entree was pathetically over salted and greasy. My wife ordered her steak cooked a medium well, it was an excellent cut of beef but it was served medium rare and her side dishes were cold (probably due to the ambient temp). This whole experience was unfortunate, we really liked the entertainment and the ambiance. Most of all we are just really let down after having hopes of finding a fine food establishment in the Golden Triangle.
The $48 ribeye looked like the ones at Waffle House. It had good flavor but it wasn’t even close to a 16oz. ribeye. I specifically asked for a regular table and they put us at a high top. The waiter simply said oops I’m sorry. We were happy to pay for service and quality, sadly neither happened. But the flavor of the food was good.
The food was excellent and good portions. Service was friendly and attentive. Only down side is with advertisement of "live jazz " we were expecting trumpets, saxophones, guitarists, etc., but what we got was 2 people on electric keyboards with synthesized jazz sounds. It was still good music, but not what we expected. Overall, we would still go back when we are in the area.
We were on the patio. It was lovely with overhead fans and additional cooling units. It was quiet which was appreciated because of our hearing impaired dining companions. The food and service were very good as were the cocktails and wine. The only sour note was the cigar smoke drifting down from the roof dining area toward the end of our dining time. It was most annoying.
We went with another couple and it was a great get away from kids. Loved the atmosphere and jazz music. The musician was amazing. Our server was the best we have had in a long time, so friendly and attentive and was there to make us happy. There was one little problem but she took care of it right away and the manager was involved too. Would recommend this place to everyone.
My wife’s fried shrimp was of good quality, my blackened catfish dinner needs to be taken from the menu. The angel hair pasta came out in a soup of sauce and the catfish seasoning was not done well either. The bottom plank of catfish had sank into the pasta (soup) and was inedible. I have had much better blackened catfish at Cheddars for half the price. This was my first disappointing visit out of many and hope it was just an inexperienced chef.
The service was a little slow, but the waitress was friendly, so it made up for the fact we seldom saw her. Loved the music, the cocktails were so-so and the food was mediocre at best. Had to send the Grilled Quail back because it was so salty, it was inedible. The catfish was mushy and under-seasoned. The appetizer sampler plate was delicious!!
Nice quiet place for an anniversary dinner. Almost all restaurants now are filled with loud people. Dinner is supposed to be a quiet time to eat an have low conversation. Suga's is always a nice place with good food. The only problem I had was the over cooked redfish. It was dry. But... we will dine there again.
Not the best experience I have had. The food which I did get to taste was decently prepared. My steak first came on a bed of green beans which were cooked with mushrooms (this particular note should be listed on the menu. I am allergic). The next steak that came was over cooked. For a $50 New York strip I would expect it to be a single strip not separate cuts of meat that are thinner than my finger. Sorry but this did not meet expectations and won't visit here again.
I must admit that I was a bit disappointed in our Reserved Sunday dining here at Suga's.
From the beginning of using OpenTable app and speaking to confirm my reservations and being told that I would receive a call back, I never did. :(
When we got there, 2nd floor we were seated. The pro was their singers! We were very entertained by them. Very engaging!
And predominantly the food minus the very dry grits was good!
Our service was AWFUL!!! Completely awful!
I'm the type of person when it comes to paying for good food, I DON'T mind spending... If it's GOOD!!!
But service has to come with the prices they are asking for! And Service this day was by far under par!!! She was friendly, but lacked everything else! Not attentive. Even seemed like she went everywhere else but our table a few times.
From taking our drink order, placing our food order, refill our drinks, bring the food without the proper condiments needed, uhhhhh! Even getting our ticket was a hassle!
I definitely don't see myself or my family returning anytime soon, nor recommending my friends. They're too many restaurants now that are less expensive and far better service!!!!
PS. We were there to celebrate my parents anniversary and there was not ANY acknowledgment..... smh
Since it was our first time visiting , I would have liked to have access to the full menu instead of just the Father's Day menu. The wait staff seemed to be overwhelmed and not prepared for our reservation. Some tables had tablecloths and others did not. We ordered an appetizer and had to ask for plates. The plates for the appetizers were plastic plates which I did not expect at a fine dining establishment. My entrée, shrimp & grits, came out lukewarm. I did not want to send it back due to the wait we had to receive it and I was pleased the waiter gave a 50% discount without me requesting it. My father had the duck and he enjoyed it. The entertainment was very good, ambiance good, and food tasty.
We went for Father's Day expecting the brunch from past visits. Suga's opted to provide a special menu for that day with excellent choices ... At sky-high prices. Meal for two with an appetizer, entree, and dessert, coffee and two Bloody Mary drinks cost $200.
We are experienced diners and did not mind the prices, but it would have been intimidating for many people in our area.
Don't eat here! The service is terrible and the prices are WAY to high for the food they are serving up! I got the special, it was $55 and not worth half that price. Everything was way over-seasoned.Also the host didn't check me in for my open table reservation.
We have been there twice. The first time was for a suprise birthday and it was AMAZING. The second time was awful. The waitress was no where to be found, the steak was bleeding when I asked for well done then when I sent it back it came back charred. Also I had sent two of my friends there for her birthday. I requested the birthday package, but nothing was ever set up for them I had to call twice. The waiter was never to be found. Each and every time they needed something they had to get up to find the waiter. Then they sang happy birthday to my friend, which I've never know this company to do, but she was very uncomfortable.
It had been about 5 years since we were last at Sugas and had remembered the jazz music and romantic feel, so we chose this for our anniversary dinner. The night was nothing like we expected. The rolls were good, but the gumbo was overcooked and the rice was crunchy. There were flies inside! One landed on our appetizer!! Gross! We will not be back!!
