Le Sugar Reef Ratings and Reviews
Moments parfaits
Sugar Reef has been one of our favorite restaurants for years , but we were disappointed with one item at our latest dinner there. The mussels were not as good as we remembered them - too large and lacking the usual taste. Everything else - the snapper, beet salad, wine - were quite good.
Nice food, nice music, service was ok.
We had one of us who did not want to eat meat.
It would be great to have more choices for vegan or vegetarian people.
The single vegan salad could be improved.
The new owner was very present during the evening and this was very appreciated.
Speaking French with the owner war very cool. :)
We have been coming back to Sugar Reef every year for many years. It was always the restaurant we chose for our first night back in Florida. And after that I would choose it for my birthday. And many times in between. It combined a delightful beach front location with a sophisticated and tasteful French Caribbean menu and a charming staff. Things seem to have changed. Although some of our favorites were still on the menu, the list seems to have been broadened and dumbed down to suit the tastes of tourists who want only the familiar and ordinary. And the service, while friendly, was no longer quite so acutely knowledgeable. I can understand the financial realities that drive these decisions. And we’ll give Sugar Reef another chance this winter. But we are already online and on Zagat looking for our new favorite French restaurant.
We have been to Sugar Reef four times over a six year period. Athough past visits were memorable, this last visit was very disappointing. The wait for food was interminable. Both entrees we selected had on the menu as a starch a risotto. Apparently there was some issue in the kitchen and as a result we were served - after an interminable wait, and no explanation - mashed potatoes. I don't particularly mind the substitution, but having it arrive late and unannounced was not good service.
Really good meal. Seafood Pasta was PERFECT (tons of all the right ingredients artfully prepared). Calamari in the pasta was great and that is one ingredient that rarely gets done right. Pasta perfect and really really liked the sauce. Could you get the meal for $5 less if you weren't on the beach? Of course, but guess what..........If you stay on Hollywood Beach, then eat here at least once-- you just can't find the quality and view anywhere else. Tremendous Value!
The service was poor. We were served our entree prior to the one appetizer we had ordered to share so we passed on it. It took a long time to get our dessert which was a Key Lime pudding not a pie. We were perturbed that an 18% gratuity had been added to our bill when we were a party of 3. We were surprised since we have dined here before and the service was excellent . The food is delicious and it is a great location. Not sure we will return any time soon.
Fiancé birthday dinner. Great location on the beach with perfect ambiance. Service started out a little slow but quickly improved. The place was busy when we arrived for our 7:30 reservation, but we were seated immediately.
The food is fantastic. We split the bacon wrapped shrimp with brussel sprouts, she had the spinach salad and I had the wedge. Both were great. Glazed salmon, and bronzino were our entrees and they did not disappoint. For desert we shared the apple pie, it was very good as well.
We will definitely be back!
Hollywood Beach has a wide variety of just-ok restaurants of various stripes. Sugar Reef Grill, however, is of a different order. The staff, chef, and owner always strive to be at least a clear grade above the other offerings on the beach in terms of service and menu quality (JWB is a higher-priced option, but also of note). Staff greet you politely, and are attentive throughout your dining experience. The food is always very good and well-presented. A clear choice on this beach.
