Le Sugar Reef Ratings and Reviews
We have been to Sugar Reef four times over a six year period. Athough past visits were memorable, this last visit was very disappointing. The wait for food was interminable. Both entrees we selected had on the menu as a starch a risotto. Apparently there was some issue in the kitchen and as a result we were served - after an interminable wait, and no explanation - mashed potatoes. I don't particularly mind the substitution, but having it arrive late and unannounced was not good service.
Really good meal. Seafood Pasta was PERFECT (tons of all the right ingredients artfully prepared). Calamari in the pasta was great and that is one ingredient that rarely gets done right. Pasta perfect and really really liked the sauce. Could you get the meal for $5 less if you weren't on the beach? Of course, but guess what..........If you stay on Hollywood Beach, then eat here at least once-- you just can't find the quality and view anywhere else. Tremendous Value!
The service was poor. We were served our entree prior to the one appetizer we had ordered to share so we passed on it. It took a long time to get our dessert which was a Key Lime pudding not a pie. We were perturbed that an 18% gratuity had been added to our bill when we were a party of 3. We were surprised since we have dined here before and the service was excellent . The food is delicious and it is a great location. Not sure we will return any time soon.
Fiancé birthday dinner. Great location on the beach with perfect ambiance. Service started out a little slow but quickly improved. The place was busy when we arrived for our 7:30 reservation, but we were seated immediately.
The food is fantastic. We split the bacon wrapped shrimp with brussel sprouts, she had the spinach salad and I had the wedge. Both were great. Glazed salmon, and bronzino were our entrees and they did not disappoint. For desert we shared the apple pie, it was very good as well.
We will definitely be back!
Hollywood Beach has a wide variety of just-ok restaurants of various stripes. Sugar Reef Grill, however, is of a different order. The staff, chef, and owner always strive to be at least a clear grade above the other offerings on the beach in terms of service and menu quality (JWB is a higher-priced option, but also of note). Staff greet you politely, and are attentive throughout your dining experience. The food is always very good and well-presented. A clear choice on this beach.
First time we tried this place. Very pretty room right off Hollywood broadwalk, white tablecloths and elegant room in a location known for pizza and casual food. I had a special vegetable soup (it was like an onion soup with large chunks of veggies), wife had escargot. The snails needed a little more salt and butter but they were hot and fine, fresh warm bread to go with them. I'd recommend they stop putting grape tomatoes on top of the snails, I've had them a hundred times and never served with tomatoes before. We both had corvina special with a caper and butter sauce, the entrees were delicious. We finished meal with profiteroles which were very good, two came in a serving, we would have gladly eaten a third. Very fairly priced entrees and wine list, friendly and attentive service. Owner came by to make sure we were enjoying dinner. We will be back.
My favorite place to eat at the Hollywood Broadwalk. Even great for breakfast. The food is delicious and the staff is wonderful. Beautiful ocean view and you can eat inside or out.
I always take out of town guests there. Never disappointed. This place is a hidden gem.
Have been a patron infrequently over many years.Service was much better than in the past, but I find the owner always aloof. The menu is varied and good, but a bit expensive for the average diner.
Parking is extremely difficult, which is something to be mindful of.
We were very disappointed this time with Sugar Reef. We have frequented this restaurant many times in the past and lately each time we like it less and less. They are always out of the selection that we want on the menu. The food was average to not great. We think it's time for a new chef. This place used to be wonderful, what happened? The calamari was floating in something really bitter. The beet salad was strange. The prices are high for boring beach food. Bring back the old Sugar Reef. Please :)
there were so many wait staff buzzing around you couldn't tell who was accountable. but in the end it didn't feel attentive.
escargot didn't have much garlic, beet carpaccio was suppose to be 2 shades of beets etc arrived virtually undressed plain sliced beets with a few sprigs of green and some cheese thrown on..very plain and quite expensive.
Overall quite a disappointing experience compared to my previous 2.
Will give it a rest for awhile
In a word: Terrible. The service was awful and the food was just as bad. The waiter just didn't know anything - at all. We had to ask for bread, they missed one of our salad orders, the pasta was crunchy (CRUNCHY!), the shrimp tasted bad (fishy) and the tails were left in though it was IN a pasta dish (what?), and they mixed up the pasta on two orders. For the prices they charge, I expect them to deliver good food and good service. They didn't.
Note: This is the first negative review I have ever written. It was THAT bad.
This is a beautiful location right on the beach. I usually have the wonderful corvina but I tried the mahi mahi because they were out of corvina and it was not as good. It was blackened with guacamole on top - just a meager spoonful. There was not enough flavor in the fish. It was served with very tasty fingerling potatoes and thin asparagus which were done nicely. The bacon wrapped shrimp with brussel sprouts with balsamic reduction as an appetizer was excellent! The strip steak was rather dry. Very delicious banana bread for dessert. The prices are high and the fish and steak were disappointing.
