Good music. Good food. Good people.
Doesn’t get better than this if you enjoy live music and fabulous food!
Great time with Aziza Miller and PrimeTime 27! Please bring them back. The service was great the food was amazing. The server was quick to say no before he checked and he was often mistaken. However we loved it.
Enjoyed the establishment. Quiet, cozy and definitely different. Great Manhattans! They do have a variety of live shows there. I left prior for a concert at the Beacon. I would definitely go back for the full experience. Warm and friendly place.
It was my first time there and my hubby wanted to go for his birthday. I loved the ambiance. The food was delish, particularly the collard greens. They weren't overly seasoned as I find many soul food restaurants do these days. The ambiance was very nice and the live singing was great.
Normally the food here is exceptional. Today the food was subpar. The macaroni & cheese taste like Kraft macaroni & cheese and all of the food was either cold or barely warm. Was not impressed with the food. My family was not impressed with the alcoholic beverages.
GREAT EXPERIENCE! WILL DEFINITELY RETURN IN THENEAR FUTURE
FOOD WAS DELICIOUS!!!!
It was amazing. Music was great. Food was excellent and the restaurant was very cozy. Service wasn’t the best as it took a long time to order. With that being said I would definitely go again.
Reservation for 6:15, got seated in a walkway table 3 hours later, was very uncomfortable.
Decided to leave but sat at the bar instead. Paid a cover charge of $20 for 2 for the show which was not worth $1.00.
As a celebrity status restaurant my expectation were on the high end. I was greatly disappointed.
My husband and I really enjoyed ourselves. The crowd was mature, the music was great! And special thanks to Manuel who made sure we were comfortable before the restaurant even opened. Curtious service and delicious food! Their crab cakes I ordered twice. We will be going back to enjoy another great night out.
Wanted a quick bite before the movie and to relax after work. Menu looked good, however lacked flavor. Service is fine. Kitchen should use fresh herbs and step up its flare for the art of cooking.
The appetizer and entree were delicious, but the venue itself left little to be desired. It was after work on a Friday, so my expectation was to at least see the bar area full...not at all. It was explained that a show would take place around 8pm, and although people started to arrive around 7:15/7:30p, the way they are seated is not comfortable for dining and viewing a show. Given the way the tables are set-up, guest would constantly be interrupted to allow others to be seated. Also, the décor needs to be modernized; the culture can still be displayed, just more modernized. Also, the drinks can be tweeked a little to enhance them a little more.
If I could give zero stars I would! On a girls trip with my mom. She had heard about this spot and wanted to have a late dinner. I made a reservation a week in advance. I received a text yesterday asking to confirm my reservation. I responded and confirmed we would be there. We had tickets to a comedy show before dinner. They called while at the show to confirm again. Of course I couldn’t answer. We make it to the restaurant 5 minutes early and are told “You have a reservation? We have a private event!” I say yes I have a reservation and you confirmed it. A guy walks up and says they don’t have a reservation for tonight, I say yes I do. The hostess opens the book and finds my name. She says she’s sorry they don’t have a table. Another woman walks up and says go look for a table. The hostess leaves then comes back and says “we don’t have a table but you can wait 20 minutes and see if something opens at the bar but we’re really crowded!” WTH? How does this happen? Unacceptable. I will never come here again. Customer service is JOB 1 and if you can’t get that right I’m not interested!
Made reservations but when we got there (from New Jersey to nyc) I was told we had to sit in the back (the garden) and watch the show on a 32 inch tv screen because we did not make reservations 2 weeks in advance . So disappointed, not to mention they automatically include the tip in the bill. To have been wanting to go to this place for a very long time and it’s a shame that I had a lousy experience
Great place to eat
Dinner and drinks were fantastic. Only complaints are tables too close together and wish drink prices were on menu. Thought drinks were a little pricey for amount you received. Very tasty though
Amazing music from the live band. Good food and decent service. Table seating very close together. Slightly claustrophobic
Catfish fingers were delish. Spring rolls appeared to be store bought and heated. Main entrees - Red Snapper and Steak - were absolutely wonderful, well cooked and tasty. All the staff we encountered were engaging, well mannered, and helpful. The ambiance of the Garden Room felt more like we were in the staff lounge area. Main room is a little pressed for space but decent. Bar is nice too. I look forward to another meal here.
Met with NY friends on our trip from London with my wife. The food was good, service good and entertainment excellent. I have already recommended the venue as a must see venue if in New York. Night made by meeting Valerie Simpson.
Nice venue for big groups and jazz
Loved this cozy soft jazz supper club full of nice people especially the staff
We had a terrible experience. Our reservation was accepted accidentally by the restaurant. They sat us in the back. Our food took almost an hour and a half and was terrible. It tasted like mashed potatoes out of a box and nothing had flavor. Finally, they included an automatic tip which was preposterous considering the poor quality of the food and lack of service.
Best place in NYC. Very lively and the talent that shows up at that place is UNBELIEVABLE.
Great place for a bite before a show at the beekman theatre the cornbread and strawberry butter is addicting great service as well we had the mussels with white whine and the salad with Seared pears amazing!
Great music and great fun. I met with a friend and we went to the Thursday night jam session. We got to hear hear the beautiful Valerie Simpson sing with the house band. We left totally happy.
It would a great spot for a business dinner as long as its scheduled early in the evening. I absolutely LOVE LOVE the restaurant.
Food was ok not great but music was interesting. We may go back for another show.
Actually, changed to a party of 7, everyone liked the atmosphere, food and the live music. We were there celebrating a birthanniversary for D. S., she was happy, 5 stars!!!!
The ambiance was great. Entertainment awesome (Charlene Moore) with band and background vocals. The food was absolutely scrumptious. I had lamb chops, greens, black beans & Rice. Servers were very accommodating. A wonderful evening out. Icing on the cake when owner, Valerie Simpson stopped by to greet the artist and guests. A 10 on scale of 1 to 10.
The place is a bit small, but Great environment, music, and food. I recommend making reservations to have guaranteed seats by the stage. We preferred to sit by the bar so that we could hold a conversation.
One of the highlights of my trip. Fried chickenwas oh so good! The ambience was cozy and the live music was incredible... fun times!! Looking forward to returning when I visit NYC again!!
We really enjoyed our evening at Sugar Bar.
The appetizers (calamari and mussels) were tasty and filling.
The meal (lamb chops and salmon) was delicious, excellent greens.
Husband thoroughly enjoyed the apple crisp for dessert.
Entire staff was attentive and polite. African themed decor was comfortable and cozy.
Live music by Electrikana was great!
Most amazing music in NYC
Great food and great time. Too early for music but will come back.
Interesting decor, a very pleasant and attentive staff, and a competent rendering of Cajun cuisine made for a pleasant dining experience.

Great service and glad to support Ashford and Simpson restaurant
Celebrated wedding Anniv. (39)
Sugar Bar is for the grown and sexy crowd. The service is professional, the food is delicious and the live entertainment is classy. You will definitely enjoy this place!
The sugar bar is the best kept secret in the city.
Really had a great time here, the food was delicious. We had the jerk lamb with cheddar mashed potatoes, I had collard greens with mine, he had steamed vegetables. The drinks were good also, they did not skimp on the alcohol! :) We watched some great live performances and even purchased some of their CDs, they were that good. This is a great place to treat someone special
Had a wonderful experience, enjoyed the live music, food was great, drinks were ok,but was totally surprised by the cash cover charge that I should have been informed of when I made the reservation.
