Sugar Bar Ratings and Reviews
If I could give zero stars I would! On a girls trip with my mom. She had heard about this spot and wanted to have a late dinner. I made a reservation a week in advance. I received a text yesterday asking to confirm my reservation. I responded and confirmed we would be there. We had tickets to a comedy show before dinner. They called while at the show to confirm again. Of course I couldn’t answer. We make it to the restaurant 5 minutes early and are told “You have a reservation? We have a private event!” I say yes I have a reservation and you confirmed it. A guy walks up and says they don’t have a reservation for tonight, I say yes I do. The hostess opens the book and finds my name. She says she’s sorry they don’t have a table. Another woman walks up and says go look for a table. The hostess leaves then comes back and says “we don’t have a table but you can wait 20 minutes and see if something opens at the bar but we’re really crowded!” WTH? How does this happen? Unacceptable. I will never come here again. Customer service is JOB 1 and if you can’t get that right I’m not interested!
Made reservations but when we got there (from New Jersey to nyc) I was told we had to sit in the back (the garden) and watch the show on a 32 inch tv screen because we did not make reservations 2 weeks in advance . So disappointed, not to mention they automatically include the tip in the bill. To have been wanting to go to this place for a very long time and it’s a shame that I had a lousy experience
Catfish fingers were delish. Spring rolls appeared to be store bought and heated. Main entrees - Red Snapper and Steak - were absolutely wonderful, well cooked and tasty. All the staff we encountered were engaging, well mannered, and helpful. The ambiance of the Garden Room felt more like we were in the staff lounge area. Main room is a little pressed for space but decent. Bar is nice too. I look forward to another meal here.
We had a terrible experience. Our reservation was accepted accidentally by the restaurant. They sat us in the back. Our food took almost an hour and a half and was terrible. It tasted like mashed potatoes out of a box and nothing had flavor. Finally, they included an automatic tip which was preposterous considering the poor quality of the food and lack of service.
The ambiance was great. Entertainment awesome (Charlene Moore) with band and background vocals. The food was absolutely scrumptious. I had lamb chops, greens, black beans & Rice. Servers were very accommodating. A wonderful evening out. Icing on the cake when owner, Valerie Simpson stopped by to greet the artist and guests. A 10 on scale of 1 to 10.
We really enjoyed our evening at Sugar Bar.
The appetizers (calamari and mussels) were tasty and filling.
The meal (lamb chops and salmon) was delicious, excellent greens.
Husband thoroughly enjoyed the apple crisp for dessert.

Really had a great time here, the food was delicious. We had the jerk lamb with cheddar mashed potatoes, I had collard greens with mine, he had steamed vegetables. The drinks were good also, they did not skimp on the alcohol! :) We watched some great live performances and even purchased some of their CDs, they were that good. This is a great place to treat someone special
Atended a CD release party for the incomparable Kirk Bailey. The atmosphere was excellent.
There was a clear view to the stage/performers. The venue was comfortable, food was tasty, service was good and the restrooms were clean. I will definitely come back and refer to others.
