***COVER CHARGE WILL BE APPLIED IF YOU DECIDE TO STAY FOR THE SHOW***.
great restaurant ad food was great. the service was just too long...no reason for food to take that long to prep especially on a "not so busy" night. I will definitely go to this place again. Hopefully next time service will be much faster.
Hi Raymond. We apologize for the slow service. I will bring this to the manager's attention. Thank you for giving us another shot. We look forward to seeing you.
Great food and great entertainment however tables are too close. You have to move the table to get up.
Thank you for the review. We like to share with our guests, that our tables are set in a family style seating. However if you would prefer to to sit separate from the other tables. You can make a request with hostess. We hope you will be back to visit again.
My 12 yr. old son and I were celebrating my husband's 50th birthday on a Wednesday evening. Little did we know that it was Motown night and my husband happens to be from Detroit so it was a perfect evening. The food was amazing! I had the stuffed shrimp with crabmeat appetizer and the lobster ravioli entrée special; my son had the fried chicken wings' appetizer and ribeye entrée; and my husband shared the wing appetizer with my son and had the fried pork chop entrée. Just delish! I had a few glasses of Malbec which was wonderful. Our server was excellent and the live band was divine. They wished my husband a happy birthday and a slice of cake with a candle was brought out. We couldn't have asked for a better evening! We can't wait to go back.
Hi Karen G. Thank you for the wonderful review. We are pleased that you and your family had a great time! Wednesdays have been full of fun. Please come join us again soon. Happy 50th Birthday to your Husband.
1- They had us packed in there like sardines (It was between shows at the nearby Beacon Theater) And
because of the tight seating we had to pay to check our coats.
2- The fried pork chop was too thick for my liking
3- The collard greens were not good and there was a giant collard leaf on my plate. We saw another
patron's plate of greens and it had many stalks
4- We had to wait a long time for the cornbread
5- Otherwise the staff was nice.
6- The catfish tenders/fingers were good
7- Did not like the veggie spring rolls.
Hi CardoratRosaMex, We are happy that you enjoyed our catfish fingers, and staff. We have a family style seating, so we like our guests to be comfortable, so we offer coat check, however it isn't mandatory. I will notify the chef about the collard greens. We apologize for any inconvenience we may have caused. We hope you will visit us again.
Very nice restaurant with good food, however the seating is a bit tight.
Hi Sandetter, we are happy you enjoyed the food. We have a family style seating. We apogogize if it was an inconvenience, we do hope you will visit again soon.
Valentines Day Eve
Hi Terri we are happy you had a great experience. Please visit again.
Had to wait an hour after my reservation time outside
We apologize for any inconvenience. We were changing shows. The first show went over it's time. We hope you will visit again so we can accommodate you.
Restaurant had a really great atmosphere and our waiter was very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. We had a wonderful time!
My girlfriend and I came for dinner on Thursday’s Open Mic night. We got there about 30 mins before our reservation, so we could increase our chances of dining in the main room. We lucked out and got the last table! The food was absolutely amazing. We had the catfish fingers, I had the steamed shrimp and my girlfriend had the red snapper. It was all superb! The drinks were tasty and when the music started the vibe became 100% live. I absolutely cannot wait to go back! Maybe one day I’ll sing!
Hi Elijah! We'd love for you to come back and sing!!! We are happy you had a great time!
What a great find this restaurant was!! It’s a definite place that we will frequent whenever we are in New York.
The food was delicious. I had the crab stuffed tilapia. Hubby had the blacken catfish. Best tasting collard greens, cornbread and macaroni and cheese. True comfort food
The 4 piece jazz band was fantastic and an extra bonus.
Service was impeccable. Very attentive staff at all times.
Gina! Thank you so much! Glad you had a memorable experience! Please come visit us again soon.
The live music was fantastic. Food isn’t always good at where there’s music but the food is top notch at Sugar Bar. The hostess and table service were the best. Can’t wait to go back.
Suzanne we are so happy you enjoyed the music and the food!!! We hope you come visit us again soon!!
Very friendly environment. Great food and music. Wonderful staff
Great spot for jazz, small, as most jazz spots are, but energetic and lots of fun! And the food was delicious. Everyone at my table had something different - mussels, catfish, burgers - all seasoned and cooked well. Loved my mussels!
We left before the music started so it was not loud at all.
Loved the food- grilled blackened salmon and talapia stuffed with crab meat!
Good corn bread and we were also there in time for happy hour drink prices!
Definitely will go back!!
Absolutely marvelous and the perfect ambiance to celebrate our anniversary
The food was awesome, awesome, awesome at the Sugar Bar. Service was great we both had the whole red snapper, collard greens, I had plantains and my husband the Mac and cheese along with black beans and rice. The personalized performance singing “Happy Birthday “ to my husband and the others by Irina was amazing. We wish there was a Sugar Bar in our home town Atlanta. When we come back to NY you are on our list.
A thoroughly enjoyable night of music and surprisingly decent food for a music joint. The service was excellent. Although we didn’t have a reservation for the main room, Matilda did all she could to get us a table and she succeeded. We had a great table close to the stage, which was wonderful because my friend sang. Open mic night, Thursdays, is the bomb. We were seated next to the nicest people. The vibe and camaraderie is very cool and welcoming, and Miss Valerie Simpson, owner and acclaimed singer songwriter is approachable and gracious. A special shoutout to the bartender Shina ( spelling??) and her fabulous margaritas. We will definitely be going back.
Very good food, service and live music every night is awesome. A jewel.
Thank you for your review. We are really happy that you had a great time. Please come again.
We had a good time at The Sugar Bar.
Open mic night is always a good night to go !
Please come again soon. Thank you for your feed back.
My husband and I celebrated our 2 year wedding anniversary. We loved the atmosphere and the band was amazing.
Was there again last night to see Irini & the Jazz Mix. Great musical show. Really good middle American and Southern food and drinks at good prices. Excellent service and ambiance. SB has a varied and interesting clientele. Lynn and I met the Mayor of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba, town for release of his new book, and several dancers from Irini's class at the Alvin Ailey Studio.
The staff, the atmosphere, the price was wonderful. I would tell this, to make sangria in bigger glasses. That drink belongs in a bigger glass.
The service and cuisine were amazing - We are here for the US Open and wanted to celebrate my husbands 60th birthday at the Sugar Bar - we were not disappointed from the hot cornbread with strawberry butter to the turkey chili to the fried chicken and monk fish to the banana rum punch - every item was extremely delicious and attractively served - oh and by all means go on Wednesday to see the band OLD SCHOOL R&B with Class and Spice they even made “Alfie” sound good - everything was reasonably priced and the staff was very professional and attentive-I would definitely come back - thank you for making my husbands birthday a night to remember!!!
While it was early in the evening, the customers at the bar was a bit loud. We had to ask about the pre-fix menu option. But overall, we like the layout/design of Sugar Bar and the value for eating out in Manhattan is really appealing.
Un super accueil pour les 50 ans de mariage de mes parents le chanteur leur a fait un hommage. Service super au petits soins.
Je ne regrette pas et je vous le conseille. Les enfants sont acceptés.
The service, entertainment and food were wonderful. When I visit New York again, I certainly will make the Sugar Bar one of my stops. Valerie Simpson is to be commended for the maintenance of this Manhattan showcase. LOVE IT!!!!!!!
My husband and I celebrated our 3rd wedding anniversary at the Sugar Bar it was blues night and the music was very good and also open mic and my husband John sang which was a highlight for me. The food was awesome if you’re in NYC please visit... Valerie is a sweetheart!!
I would recommend it to a friend for the music only. The food was sub-par. Fried chicken not seasoned well😩. Pork chop tough 😩. Could not understand our server as English is his second language and the noise level made it harder.
I have recommended family and friends to the Sugar Bar and they enjoyed it like I do. I'll make it a routine stop whenever I come to New York.
We had reservations for dinner and open mic night. We arrived on time and they couldn't find the reservation. I told them it was via Open Table. Then they miraculously found it. They then told us that there is a $10 per person cover ( that's ok) CASH. That set off alarms. But we paid. They wanted to seat us in the BACK room on the other side of the kitchen in a COMPLETELY empty restaurant. Saying that the tables are for the whole night not just dinner. I replied that I know which is why I made reservations. I asked how were we supposed to see the show? They said there's screens in the back. Now why would I want to do that??? They said it's up to the host to seat you someplace else. In an empty restaurant???
The place needs refurbishing. We requested our money back and went someplace else that values its customers.
The Sugar Bar was beautiful and AMAZING! Andre Henry was AMAZING! The food was incredibly delicious! I’ll definitely be back soon when I’m in NYC again :)
I was visiting NYC from Washington, DC! Everything was great-the food, the music, and the service!
Excellent service and food. The entertainment is second to none. Everytime I visit New York, the Sugar Bar is a MUST. Valerie Simpson is great as always.
Food was wonderful . The band is fantastic. The next time I book a reservation I will request for single table due to the seating, Otherwise I plan to go there again. JBM
Great place! Just wished the website informed of cover charge and live performance. I saw Valerie Simpson which was awesome!
I took my boyfriend on a date here. We had a FABULOUS night. Great food, Beautiful ambiance, and the music was amazing!
Thursday night’s are epic, food is great, ambience is spectacular!
It’s all about the amazing music & intimate atmosphere. Fabulous!
Met some really nice people while dining at the Sugar Bar.
