Straw in San Francisco is located in the Hayes Valley neighborhood. The entire menu at Straw is inspired by the type of fare youd find at a carnival. There is even a tilt-a-whirl booth. For starters, try the mini corn dogs, savory lamb cupcakes, sweet potato tater tots or Southern fried pickles.
For your entre, the fried chicken n waffle Monte Cristo at Straw is topped with melted Swiss cheese, powdered sugar, raspberry jam, syrup and powdered sugar. Another popular item is the ringmaster. Its a donut burger with organic ground beef from Golden Gate Meat Company and melted cheddar and Jack cheese. The donut used for the bun is homemade.

Straw Ratings and Reviews
nice and attentive staff couldn't save the food. corn dogs were mushy. philly cheesesteak was unrecognizable; it was a quesidila, and tasteless at that, and served with a dipping sauce that was a terrible match. My friend had the jambalaya, and said it was good.
This place rocks, SO fun, forced my "foodie" friends to go and lighten up, the food is high quality, just not pretentious, and a lot of it fried. If you can't hang, they have some normal salad choices, chicken, etc. You'll live. I loved it, can't wait to go back.
Dining at Straw was a fun experience. From the delightful decorations to the menu to the food and drink. My favorite had to be the Big Dipper Cocktail rimmed with Fun Dip....Delicious!! The staff was very friendly and helpful. Some of us had the glazed donut burger and others the fried chicken (the mashed potatoes were extremely good) We had ordered the chicken and waffles monte cristo sandwich, but unfortunately the waffle iron was not working, the staff replaced the meal of our choice at no charge. I would definitely go back, but next time get starters and desserts!
This fun, intentionally shabby-chic spot uses a carnival as its decor theme. They have a genuine vintage Tilt-A-Whirl seat repurposed as a two person booth. The food also is festive with such specialties as a fried chicken on a waffle Monte Christo sandwich, which is delicious by the way! Our waiter Kevin couldn't have been friendlier or more professional. Definitely worth a visit. I'll be back!
Comfort food that is very rich is what you will find at Straw. Service was great. Our waiter gave us good suggestions, but portions can definitely be shared between people. Mac attack was more a creamy version than a gooey sticky cheesy one. The cheesy grits were delicious but oh so rich in the entree with the shrimp & andouille sausages. The glazed donut could have had a touch more glaze to balance the burger meat. It was an interesting experience, but not somewhere I need to revisit.
My wife and I went to Straw for the first time recently and really enjoyed this charming little restaurant. We shared a couple of appetizers — the Mac and Cheese was amazing, and the Potato Chip Nachos were quite good as well. Serving sizes were large too — so much in fact, that we ended up just splitting one entree. We had the Fried Chicken 'n' Waffle Monte Christo - which was also excellent. We each enjoyed a cocktail — The vodka-infused sake with a hint of basil and fun dip rim was delicious and so was the Cotton Candy cocktail. Neither was too sweet — which was a concern when first reading the names of the drinks. A delightful experience — I'd recommend it to anyone who wants something a little bit out-of-the-ordinary.
My first experience with Straw was when they catered for our my work's lunch (100+ people). It was one of the best lunches I've ever had because it was different then your typical burger. The strawberry arugula salad was fresh and yummy. The buffalo chicken sliders were so savory. I was extremely satisfied with the food. I liked their food so much i decided to go to their restaurant with a couple friends. When we entered the place, it felt like we were kids again. They successfully created a carnival ambiance. I ordered the bearded lady, which is a pulled pork sandwich with blackberry sauce. I loved it! Overall, their food is flavorful, and the service was good. I will definitely return because of the unique experience created for patrons.
Went to Straw because of the good reviews and the proximity to the hotel. The food was so good. I ordered the sweet tots appetizer. It was amazing. Best sweet potato tots I've ever had. The Bearded Lady sandwich (pulled pork) was so good I literally didn't want to put it down. For dessert we had the funnel cake. It comes with three dipping sauces and was out if this world. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. Service was also fantastic. I definitely recommend Straw!
This restaurant did not meet my expectations.
I was referred to this spot by an enthusiastic dinner and was excited
To try Straw based on the recommendation.
The menu was limited. I was surprised the soft-drinks were
Limited as well ie: not even cherry coke or Shirley temple to be had.
I ate the fish n chips and thought it was very greasy.
Ordered a funnel cake for our foreign birthday boy
Only to be disappointed further when a tea light was offered as a b-day
Candle substitute :( . Would have rather dined somewhere more familiar.
Ate there with my brother for brunch and it was close to empty on a thurs afternoon. Staff was slow and needed to call theor attention because of this, waitress messed up on my order (forgot my soup but at least she did not charge me for it) and the ambience was okay simply because there was enough sunlight from the huge windows but not enough air to circulate on 80degrees of heat outdoors. Grilled cheese sandwhich was great but pulled pork had too much meat and had too much vinegar (borderline sour). Our saving grace was the "mac attack" appetizer that was awesome!!! May have to come back for dinner and give them a second chance since other ppl rave so much about them.
So being a server I know looks matter. Being a young African American I know I'm not ideal to serve but I still deserve good service. I order the hot wing app and it was delicious but there wasn't no app plates and I had to get my own water jug. It was pretty slow so I don't understand how me and my brother could eat the whole app before the server ask how it tasted. Also we had an awkward change of servers. I don't know how they wouldn't think we would notice. Both ther servers had a pretentious attitude and didnt seem to polite.
Straw is fun food in a fun atmosphere. Not super fancy but definitely festive. There was a table next to us having a bday for an 8 year old--I'd say it's perfect for any age. The food definitely tends toward the unhealthy (fried etc) but again it's festive and the kind of food you wouldn't eat everyday.
Food was interesting...bit on heavy side as a lot is deep fried...would recommend balance with a salad (I had kids with me so we just split the favorites corn dogs, chick and waffle etc.). My kids loved it...would go again but try to balance with light fare.
Very quick service, but not pushy! Was just very efficient. Food was very yummy. Very varied options and so very quirky. I had the ringmaster which is a cheeseburger served between 2 donuts. Sounds so wrong but tasted soooo good! My waiter was friendly and chatty. I arrived as it opened so was not at all busy but I can see these place getting packed out. Its hidden in a nice area, but I had heard of it so made the effort to come from the more touristy area. If I ever come back to San Francisco I will make the effort to get here again as I loved it.
Carnival food at its best: mini-corn dogs & sweet potato tots for appetizers, cotton candy & deep-fried candy bars for dessert. The featured dish for the main meal is the Ringmaster: a hamburger patty slid inside a bun of two glazed donuts - and you can top it with cheese, bacon & egg. The donuts have gotten smaller since the first visit back in December so its less exciting now but there are other dishes to try. Check out the menu online.
Its a tiny space, reservations are usually needed. Its a funky, vibrant space: leave you snooty dining pals at home.
i really enjoyed our carnie fest at sraw! menus in old children's books, house-made potato chip nachos, a top-notch veggie cheesesteak, unidentified fried fun size candy bars, crayons, and my pink cotton candy cocktail was poured over real cotton candy right at the table!
LOVE this place -- very fun menu, inexpensive happy hour will decent quality selections, attentive staff and owner. It's very casual, verging on rustic interior, but the special touches (storybook cover menus, creative meals, snack and drink offerings, the carnival fun) make it both delightful and nourishing eats and experience. A hidden gem, for sure. A great alternative in the Hayes Valley area just before a show at the SFJazz Center.
Straw is the restaurant you have to try! Creative and whimsy menu that while delicious will leave you full and regretting your decisions the next day. I had the fried chicken monte cristo, great combo but the chicken was under seasoned. For an appetizer we ordered the Mac attack and homemade potato chip nachos... Awesome choices!!
