Straw in San Francisco is located in the Hayes Valley neighborhood. The entire menu at Straw is inspired by the type of fare you�d find at a carnival. There is even a tilt-a-whirl booth. For starters, try the mini corn dogs, savory lamb cupcakes, sweet potato tater tots or Southern fried pickles.
For your entr�e, the fried chicken n waffle Monte Cristo at Straw is topped with melted Swiss cheese, powdered sugar, raspberry jam, syrup and powdered sugar. Another popular item is the ringmaster. It�s a donut burger with organic ground beef from Golden Gate Meat Company and melted cheddar and Jack cheese. The donut used for the bun is homemade.
It seemed like it wouldn't work. It seemed like it was just a little too much. A donut AND a burger? But, the first bite almost made us cry. So sweet. So savory. So yummy.
Coming back for the chicken and waffle monte crisco... chicken, waffles, jelly and powdered sugar? Bring it on.

I came with my boyfriend for an anniversary dinner and I'm so glad we chose Straw. We had a reservation for Sunday night but didn't really need one (though it might be busier when there isn't pouring rain out). We shared sweet potato tots for an appetizer (I love their BBQ dipping sauce) and then he got The Ringmaster and I got the Fried Chicken n Waffle Monte Cristo and we split both. Oh my God. So sweet, so meaty, so everything. Everything was amazing, but I'd choose The Ringmaster over the Monte Cristo next time - there was just so much waffle I was stuffed before I was halfway done with it.
My favorite thing, though, was the drinks - I got the Big Dipper (vodka-infused sake, lemonade, strawberry and a Fun Dip rim, YUM) and my boyfriend got the Cotton Candy Cocktail, which is a MUST. They bring you a glass overflowing with blue cotton candy and then pour a sake-champagne mix over it so the cotton candy melts down right in front of you, and the final product is like a delicious bright memory of youth... plus booze.
Service was also friendly and great, and I love that they bring you a little book and crayon at the end of your meal. This is definitely a place I'll re-visit, if only to prove to people that SF isn't all fancy healthy salad restaurants - we do the opposite quite well too :)

The theme of the restaurant is based on carnival/county fair. You receive popcorn as an appetizer. There is one "chair" from a carnival ride in one corner. My husband had a hamburger that has a donut as the bun. I had a grilled cheese. The dessert was deep fried candy bars.
It was not what I expected but we had a good time. Probably better for lunch than dinner. Our waitress was very friendly and very attentive.
Burger between two donuts was wonderful. Chicken and waffle Monte Cristo was fabulous. Jambalaya was flavorful but not too spicy. The chef even let us have a taste so we could decide on orderi g it. For dessert, a mystery selection of mini candy bars fried to perfection.
First time here, cute idea but very crowded. Hours listed online are incorrect. Small space, poor service, took order delivered food and that was it, had to ask for a check and refills on water came after we paid, never asked if wanted another drink or how the food was. Was never provided a drink menu or list of drinks, had to guess!
For fair food it's kind of expensive; we got out of there with a shared appetizer (amongst three people), a glass of wine and an entree for a little more than $30 with tax and tip each, but hey fairs are kind of overpriced too and it's San Francisco so . . . . The portions are big but I did not find the food amazing. I love indulging in sinfully bad for you food but only when it's worth it. It's not that the food was horrible, it's that nothing really stood out. I got the monte cristo waffle and chicken sandwich, my friends got the trip-tip skewers over garlic mash potatoes and the pulled pork sandwich with homemade potato chips. The pulled pork was the best of the three and that was not something for which I would definitely go back. I have to say the grilled cheese looked amazing, and I might venture to Straw a second time to give that a try. I'd also like to try out their desserts. I had rave reviews from friends about Straw, so maybe it was just an off night or maybe I didn't try the right dishes. I think it might be worth a second try.
My 8 year old daughter and I were going to a show at the Opera House, and I wanted a place that was tasty and not too fancy. The restaurant is very small and has a lot of charm. Cute decorations with a carnival theme. We even ate at the one table that is made of an old Ferris wheel seat (with pillows for comfort). Unlike traditional carnival food, there were plenty of healthy options too. Although the menu had some kid friendly options like corn dogs and mac n cheese, my daughter opted for the BLTA and I had portobello & pepper skewers. She loved the Aunt Sally salad with a lightly dressed vinagrette too. The proximity to the Civic Center is great too. Fun place to take kids that had plenty of options for Mom too.

So delicious! And the staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. I had requested the awesome tilt-a-whirl table and we got it! We were really happy with our entire dining experience and can't wait to go back.

This is a great little spot with absolute charm. The waiter was super friendly and attentive. The food was delicious. Had the BBQ pulled pork sandwich. It was warm, tangy and was served on the perfect roll. Love the design of the menus. It is very small and quaint inside and can be a little loud, but worth it for the ambiance.
The setting is gritty and low budget, but the food is delicious and fun! The place was empty because big party cancelled at the last minute, leaving only our table of 3 and one other 2 top. There were two servers and a fully staffed kitchen yet our service was slow. Seemed that the wait staff was very distracted by the loss of the big party. Servers were friendly and helpful, just slow. We were heading to a concert so we were interested in a faster pace. I would go again for the food.

The food is very FUN. Cute names, delicious little treats, but nothing great. I wanted to like it a lot - and I did like it - but I didn't love it. If you're looking for inexpensive fun carnival-like food (burger-y treats, fried tidbits, things on sticks) - then this is your place. But the decor is dreary, even though they try hard with a few carnival signs & a few artifacts. The waiters were all SO nice - but not the best waiters in the world... A group would have a lot of fun here, with drinks.
I saw this place on food channel, and thought it would be fun for a birthday dinner for my son. there was only one waitress, she was friendly but too much to handle for her. Don't expect any carnival fun here, and the food is only average. overall disappointed.
The restaurant felt dirty. The idea for a "carnival themed" restaurant was cute but poorly executed. When we arrived, the servers were oblivious to the fact that we made a reservation. The food wasn't bad. We thought that having plastic plates was kind of weird. On top of that, when we went to pay, we gave our waitress $60 in cash and put the rest on the card. She came back and said we had only given her $40. The restaurant isn't big. How did you lose $20? She ended up making us pay for her mistake. You weren't worth the extra $20, Straw. Overall, I would not go back go Straw or recommend it to a friend.
I had an early dinner reservation to take my eight year old daughter to the quirky carnival restaurant, she was quite excited. I had a little trouble parking, it's near the freeway. Walk in at 6:42, twelve minutes late for our 6:30 reservation. There are 7 empty tables. I ask about my reservation, host has no record of it. I say open table, he says if the reservation isn't there exactly on time he erases it. Says he can't help us all his empty tables are booked with a big phony smile. I say twelve minutes he says, sorry. Walk somewhere else for dinner, walk back an hour later still three empty tables. What a toolbox.
While the atmosphere from the door might be a little bit of a turnoff, don't go away. The food is innovative and great. Be sure and get the Big Dipper - a really nice cocktail. While some of the food is a little strange (a monte cristo with waffles for bread or a doughnut cheeseburger), the skewers are top notch as are the regular sandwiches. The prices are reasonable in an unreasonable area. I will go back to try some of the other offerings.
The vibe here is definitely 50's carnival, from the music to the décor. My mom would think the whole place needs a dusting and I wasn't willing to find out if that was intentional or not! Slushy sangria was a huge win. Next time, I'll definitely try the cotton candy cocktail, looked intriguing. Mini corn dogs were a nice starter, with a spicy ketchup as one of the sauces. My elote was probably the sweetest, most tender ear of corn I have ever had. Absolutely delish. Hubby enjoyed his meal as well...So many fun things on the dessert menu as well, but we were stuffed. Our waiter seemed distracted and could have been a bit more attentive to liquid levels in our drinks, but was friendly.
Lively atmosphere, delicious and unique menu, fun decor...great time for adults! Not so sure it's kid-friendly but definitely not inappropriate. Great music and everyone just seems to be in a good mood - both of which are nice and 'catchy'. Looking forward to return visits!
Always worried to dine with our kids, yet pretend to be adults. Best of both worlds. We loved it. Our kids loved it. The food was darn good. Larger than life eats. Entertaining to see if we could conquer the sandwich. Mission complete. I now crave a few selections on the menu. Can't wait to try the rest. And what a great idea with the desert menu/ journal. I haven't laughed that hard in years. Everything was entertaining and yummy combined. Who knew it would take my son 20 minutes to just wash his hands in the bathroom? It was as if a toy store exploded in there. I guess you could say the restroom was eye candy for kids.

On previous visits we liked Straw and the food they served. I don't know if it was an off day (Sunday before Labor Day) but on this occasion the salad leaves (to go with the kebabs or "Sticks") were decidedly not as fresh as they could have been.
Our reservation was for 815, and we were told we would be seated by 820-825. At 840 we said something. They then found us a terrible seat and agreed to comp our drinks. After having to reorder twice, our sub par watered down drinks finally arrived. By 915 we still hadn't received our food or any acknowledgement from the owner or manager who was clearly drunk and making a fool of himself.
My husband and I happened to be in San Francisco 3 years ago, the same week this restaurant opened. We had an AMAZING experience. We even ended up sharing desert with the people sitting next to us. The décor was quirky fun, with a decidedly carny vibe, lots of carnival themed pictures all over.
We visited San Francisco recently and this was one of our "must stop" places, unfortunately the ambiance we fell in love with 3 years ago was gone. They VERY loud music playing, in a VERY small space. Our entry came before our appetizer, even though we ordered the entry well after the appetizer. And we had to almost trip the wait staff to get refills on our iced tea and water. I'm saddened to say that we will not be going back.
Really wanted to like this place, but a restaurant has to do more than just paint circus motifs on the wall, hang circus photos in the bathroom, and use cute phrases in the names of its entrees. Even my kids complained about the bare bulb lighting and horrible smell in the bathroom. Food was acceptable and not too expensive, and waiter was really nice, but wouldn't go back until they re-do the decor and lighting.
I made a 1pm reservation for Monday on Sunday for two. I arrived early and was sat by the window to peruse the children's book menus and quirky decor.
The food was amazing! I ordered the "half & half", "dark and gruesome" salad (a bizarre name for something so delicious) with a side of strawberries and the blta, a root beer float, and the sweet potato tots. Yum!
The only small issue was that it took quite awhile for the restaurant's lone server to take our order, so do get an appetizer and don't arrive starving!
So good I'll definitely be back !
This has been on my list to try for a while now and I loved it. A lot smaller than I had previously thought so thank goodness I made a reservation. The food was amazing, staff was helpful and I just loved everything about Straw!
I went to Straw after seeing the restaurant featured on World's Weirdest Restaurants. I took my daughter for her 10th birthday. The food was delicious and both my 10 year old and my 4 year old enjoyed their meals (bearded lady and grilled cheese respectively). I can't wait to try their brunch!
I was looking for a fun place for a girls night out dinner and Straw was suggested to me by a coworker! We had SO much fun! From the story book menus to the delicious drink menu to the coloring book dessert menus... such a fun place The service was fantastic and the food was absolutely delicious! The decor could definitely use some work but I can't wait to go back! It's a very small place so make a reservation!
The food was phenomenal. We had lunch on a weekday, so it was empty. But if you're thinking about brunch and on a weekend, get there early or get a reservation. I've tried to land a spot and it has been packed.

The smoked bacon and apple bits made the mac & cheese the perfect snack to start our meal...plenty for two to share. Loved the pulled pork sandwich and the grilled cheese was equally good. A wonderful casual option that worked very well for us right before an evening at the symphony, which was a short walk away. And if you're lucky, you might get the whirl-a-bird looking seats at the front of this small, fun spot. We'll be back!
I wasn't sure where I wanted to go for my birthday and then decided on Straw. I started with a reservation for 6 and then quickly realized I needed a bigger table when 14 people decided to come. They were super accommodating!!! I love this place because they are fun and simple. The food is delicious and totally affordable. The staff was really friendly and took such good care of us. I would totally go back.
Straw is great - good food, good service - and especially awesome if you get to sit in the cart seat that used to be the seat from an old amusement park ride! :-)

The restaurant was off the beaten path but worth the trek. The potato chip nachos were amazing as was my 'creamsicle chiller'. My husband tried the sangria slush which was way too strong but good if you're a fan of overpowering wine flavour I guess. For dinner we had the club sandwich and burger and both were really good. I loved that house made chips were a side option as they were really good. Overall it was really good and I'd go again. The only downside is the somewhat tiny chairs with arms which I wasn't find of and it's kind of small and a bit dirty looking but I think that's just because they leave the front door open and it's an older building.
A reservation is highly recommended since seating is limited. There are no frills in their decor or seating. I was looking forward to trying the sangria slushy, but they were all out. (It was Sunday at 7:00pm.) I ordered the chicken and waffle Monte Cristo. The chicken had a nice spicy kick to it and the waffle was perfectly cooked. Nice portion. It could have easily been shared.
I loved eating at Straw because I felt it has a lot of character. It's all about the food and the experience. Very casual atmosphere, which I love, and delicious food. That's a winning combo for me.
