We celebrated a birthday at this great spot! Been there many times and the food is consistently good and the service is good! 3 in our party had the Meatloaf and is was exceptional! The Brie appetizer was delicious and amazingly delicious Vanilla Bread Pudding!
We had called in advance and made reservations for dinner after the annual Lighting of the Trees and singing Christmas Carols in the park. Lots of people there, but we were seated immediately. We both ordered their steak special meal, and a red wine, and the steak was so tasty and tender, our wine was smooth, full-bodied, and just good to the taste! Our waitress was spot-on in keeping our water glasses filled, and she stopped by regularly to see if we needed anything! Great service, atmosphere, and good food!
We couldn't help but notice a change in the clientele and how many children, and blue jeans, were present. In the past years the restaurant has tended to be upscale and a bit elegant but that no longer seems to be the case. Food was about the same as in past years except our order for the pork tenderloin from the menu was overcooked and charged as a much more expensive 'steak' on our bill. We may not return to this establishment as it isn't what it used to be, or what we expected when we made the reservations two months earlier.
Seems as though the quality had decline a bit from our previous experience a year ago. We have dined there for several years and had always found it to be outstanding. Usually the owners were present, but unless the restaurant has changed hands I did not see them
I had been to Storie Street grill before and was excited to return. We went on October 15 and had a disappointing experience. Service was terrible and we waited over an hour for our food. Chicken Parmesan, while good, was served over cold pasta. The veggies served with my fish were simply a bit of slaw. Ambiance is lovely. Reservation was honored on time. I would go again and hope that this was just an off night.
We came to Storie Street to celebrate my sister's 40th birthday. We were seated at our reservation time and warmly greeted by our server Kelsey. From there, things went downhill. There was a plate shortage so no one delivered bread plates. Then we had to ask for silverware. Our salads came out DRENCHED in dressing but we did not complain. Once salads were taken away, it took at least forty minutes for the main entrees to come. The server came by at one point and said it would just be a few more minutes but then it was another twenty minutes. When they delivered the food, we mentioned it had taken a long time and our server said very rudely that 35 minutes was average at Storie Street. Wow. We watched one of our entrees sit in the window for a long time and when it was delivered, it was dried out and cold. We asked for it to be heated and it came back with a new layer of sauce on it but still not hot. Two out of three of the other meals were bad. So disappointing and absolutely no apology from the staff. I was embarrassed that this was the place I had specially chosen to celebrate a special occasion. What a major disappointment.
We have eaten at Storie Street Grille several times over the years and have never been disappointed. The food is always great, as well as, the waitstaff. We enjoy sitting on the covered patio in the summer and fall, while the fireplace is nice during the winter. We ordered the duck wings appetizer and the pork tenderloin and butcher's filet for our meals- all were outstanding. Our server didn't rush us and invited us to stay and enjoy the beautiful evening on the patio as long as we liked. SSG is a great place for a date, special occasion, or a night out with friends. The wine list offers a great selection at reasonable prices. I always recommend SSG to locals, or out-of-towners.
I had recommended this restaurant for myself and friends as we spent the day in Blowing Rock. I had had a good experience in the past. We asked the waitress about the Fried Green Tomato BLT and she said it was their signature sandwich and ordered by many. When it arrived, it was sorely lacking in filling for the sandwich, little bacon and tomatoes. It was just a flat unfulfilling disappointment. For $13, with an additional $1 since they wanted the fries, it was a waste of money. Both were very disappointed. Another friend and myself had the meatloaf $10 special and it was good. Based on the sandwiches, however, will not go back.
This is a good restaurant and I continue to return, but the owners and greeter have "attitudes", like "you're lucky to be here and have us serve you". Too many other good restaurants in the area to treat patrons that way. Everyone who comes in isn't a tourist!
Anniversary dinner for our friends and us and both couples really enjoyed this restaurant. Impressed that the host relocated two walk-ins so they could keep our 7pm reservation. Yay, Host! The food was excellent even though the dining area is a wee bit crowded. Unique asparagus fries appetizer. My wife had shrimp & lump crab cakes which were excellent. (We live in Charleston, SC so we know crab cakes!). I had a chicken al vino and my friends had excellent beef tenderloin which got thumbs up form both. The real treat was the two bottles of house Merlot they presented us as gifts wishing us happy anniversary! Highly recommend.
My wife and I have dined here many times, and we have always been served consistently good food. We recommend making a reservation ahead through Open Table as this restaurant is one of the most popular in the area. Prices are in the $15.00-$30.00 range for main entrée with 2 vegetables, which is a great value for the money!!
This was our second time having dinner at SSG, and we made a few choices this time stemming from our prior visit.
1) We ate on the covered patio. The room inside is (or was) crowded, loud, and uncomfortable.
2) We ordered the same kalimari for an appetizer, and it was even better this time. Toss the aeoli, though—it's a bit too mayonnaisey.
3) I did not order the moonshine carbonara this time, which was a disappointing disaster. I love what the chef was after when this idea was created, but it simply doesn't work. Fried chicken and okra in a ham/onion/egg based cream sauce was discomforting, and barely palatable, save the ham. This time, I ordered the butcher's filet, which was fantastic! The best kale I have ever eaten, a delicious sauce served over the steak (cooked perfectly medium rare) and simple red skin mashed potatoes on the side. My date ordered a wedge salad, seeking a lighter fare, and she was equally impressed.
4) We ordered dessert. We had no intention to, since the menu is a bit lackluster in variety, but our waitress thought the meal took too long (which we didn't actually agree with), so she claimed she was going to "buy a dessert" for us. We took the bread pudding, which was delectable, albeit a bit old hat. Standard bourbon glaze with whipped cream. Hard to mess up bread pudding, but good job anyway, SSG.
We were determined to like this place because of the reviews and location, which brought us back a second time. I'm very happy that we returned, and I will certainly be back again soon!
My husband and I have eaten at Storie Street many times. We have NEVER been disappointed in a meal either at lunch or dinner. This past weekend, my husband ordered the duck for the first time and said it exceeded his expectations. We have discovered the key to an enjoyable meal is to go early and/or eat out on the back porch. The tables inside the restaurant are pretty close together and can feel a bit cramped (unless you score one of the larger booths). But outside is lovely and they pull down tarps if it rains, heaters for when it is chilly. Their salad is EXCELLENT, too by the way!
In town for the Blowing Rock Horse Show and made our second annual visit to Storie Street Grille. Sat outside under their covered porch and enjoyed a balmy late summer evening. Seated quickly upon arrival and our waitress greeted our table immediately. She was very personable and apologetic that they were out of salmon (first choice by 3 of the 5 women at the table). We regrouped and ordered 2 Storie Street Salads, Chicken Piccata, and 2 Shrimp and Lump Crab Cakes(*NOT shrimp AND a crab cake, but a cake with shrimp and crab in it). The food arrived in a timely fashion and everyone enjoyed their selection. Overall, an enjoyable evening. Will definitely return next year.
This restaurant has been located in the heart of Blowing Rock for as long as we have owned our vacation home...over 10 years...I know know they were here before that! The reason....great food.
We dined this past week with 2 friends visiting and had a wonderful dinner. My wife had the Trout...and said it was terrific; I had the stuffed Chicken and it was also wonderful.
Service was great and everything was perfect...however the location is small and was a bit noisy...but certainly not unbearable...it was fine.
We will definitely come back!
Just very good food at reasonable prices. Suggest not going close to closing my time. We had an 8:30 reservation, they have a 9 PM closing, the place was not that busy, and they were cleaning up around us and the few others still in the restaurant just a bit after 9 contributing to the low ambience rating.
My wife and I have been visiting Storie Street Grille for more than 10 years while in the mountains on vacation. We booked a special dinner here this week and were quickly reminded why we continue to come back.
The service was outstanding, our server was prompt and readily available without being overbearing. The baked brie is an amazing appetizer; we order it overtime we visit. My wife had a pasta dish with blue cheese and I had the mountain meatloaf with Cheerwine BBQ sauce. Trust me, this is NOT what most people think of when they hear the word "meatloaf." Both dishes were absolutely wonderful and we were very pleased with the portion size.
Lots of new restaurants have opened in Blowing Rock in the past few years. While we intend to try some of the newcomers, Storie Street will always be on our "must visit" list.
Tonight's dinner did not match the usual quality I get here. Salmon was a smaller piece than I received at lunch just a week ago and overcooked. Waitress impatient, but not discourteous. She would not linger if anyone undecided, but restaurant was busy. My house salad was delicious, as usual but guest's wedge was disappointing. Her salmon overcooked as well. But I'll go back.
