What Insiders Are Saying
A very solid neighborhood/date night restaurant in a neighborhood that could use more of both of those things. Just try not to fight each other over the squid ink pasta.
Got the halibut which was not cooked properly, the French onion soup was not well done, Dessert was awful. The only thing decent was the can beer from Maui brewing!
Great every time! My go to casual evening restaurant.
A little stark inside. Some food selections a bit overpriced. Nothing special.
Food was gourmet but pretty TINY portions for the HIGH price. Came at 5:30 as opened & no one there, left 7:30 as busy. 1st woman Server “disappeared” 1/2 way through meal taking other tables with clueless guy taking over, had NO idea what happened. He was very removed from customer service principles. I guess it’s their biz model, “floating servers” & “split tip model”...way disjointed, not good. No rapport or connection with the high-paying & values customer. Too many better places around nowadays.
The prefix menu was great deal, fried pancake is awesome, wish the fried have more flavor and could be little more crisper.
We liked the idea of bottomless mimosas with a 2 hour limit and our waitress sold us on it. I was not impressed with how slow and relaxed they were with bringing our mimosa refills as we had to keep asking them. That was a huge disappointment!!
We love StonesThrow and the new chef has made it even more fun.
Excellent restaurant, service was great. Sunday brunch was great, the pancake was huge! and delicious as was everything else we had. If I lived in San Francisco it would be my favorite place to eat.
Great SF neighborhood dining experience. Food was inventive and worth $. Highlight was the burger. Service was inconsistent but friendly. We will definitely go back.
Excellent food and service
Great service. Food was good enough.
Potato puffs and melon/cucumber salad were fantastic starters. Halibut was 4 out of 5, so really good but just a tad off with how much it was cooked. Awesome beer and wine menu organized in a creative way that I actually prefer compared to the normal way. Service on a Sat night was great and atmosphere was good. My only complaint was the entrees seemed a bit too pricey (but nothing ridiculous for SF).
I was very impressed with all of the menu items I ate. The waygu steak was some of the best meat I've ever tasted, and the squid ink pasta was amazing. The beer and wine selection was impressive. And it was very reasonably priced - great value!
Always a fav spot. All 3 first timers loved it! Success!!
We celebrated our anniversary there and were spoiled! Wonderful food, great environment - highly recommended!
The noise level after 6:15 was really high and difficult to hear our conversation we also felt the menu was very limited, not a lot of choices. Unfortunately we were a bit disappointed.
Great service at a restaurant with romantic ambience in a walkable neighborhood. Restaurant staff were very friendly and provided a lot of attention to us. Lighting and interior design made for a romantic (yet not overly serious or pretentious) ambiance. I thought the food was fine - very well-presented but tasted just all right. Price is a little high for comparable options, but I'm satisfied given the location, great service, romantic ambiance, just not so much about the food. Thanks to the staff for helping celebrate a birthday with a candle and writing on our dessert.
I really liked this restaurant and would come back. A few things that kept me from giving 5 stars: minor service issues like not getting our drinks quickly (we cancelled one order because it hadn't come by the time our bill came). Also, we ordered the burger cooked medium and it was very much on the rare side. Servers were very friendly and food was otherwise delicious.
Delightful! Lots of options for small delicious creative bites & beverages to share. Relaxed dress code and wonderful chef cuisine. Gracious and knowledgeable service.
The food wasn't that great. I felt they emphasized too much on putting different things in each dish that they overlook the fact that good taste can be simple but quality ingredients.
Food on this occasion was not up to par. I did not complain because I was on business, short on time and frankly it was so poor that I was in shock. My fish was over cooked and tasted horribly. Potatoes as a starter were quiet salty and just ok. The wine selected was mediocre. The cocktail was amazingly well balanced and delicious.
excellent service, food, and beer's choice. waiters very attentive, the only issue has been the noise: it seems there isn't any noise shielding or absorption of noise: with restaurant fully packed there's a lot of noise. coll design.
Delicious food - unique offerings that all hit the mark. The squid ink pasta is art work
Attentive efficient service- they all work as a team
Highly recommend Stones Throw / do not understand why it is not in the Top 100 of SF.
Twice I have enjoyed brunch here. Russian Hill is not my neighborhood so I enjoy exploring the area on weekends. Hyde Street is very scenic and this restaurant has great ambiance. Sitting at the bar overlooking the street is my preferred spot. The cuisine is contemporary, beautifully presented and always artful and delicious. Enjoy it.
We went to Stones Throw whilst visiting in San Francisco. It was a last minute booking, which I’m always a little skeptical about, how good can a place be if you can get a table last minute? Thankfully my skepticism was unfounded, this place is awesome! Their food menu is small; probably 6 entree dishes. I had the burger which was soooooo good, my fiancé had the short rib pasta which was also yummy. For dessert we had their take on Rocky Road which was also amazing.
They have an extensive craft beer menu which caters to every taste. Their wine menu is also extensive. Whilst their ‘by the glass’ option are great too.
Service was truly 5 star. We sat at the bar, the guy who predominantly served us (can’t remember his name, he is original from the OC and a great guy) really knew his stuff, was super helpful in picking out beers and even gave us some great tips on what to do whilst we where in San Fran.
Without doubt we’ll come back here again when we are next in town.
During a weekend in SF we had a lot of good meals dining out. Stone’s Throw was my favorite! The food was fresh, delicious, and inventive. I loved the simplicity of the decor and the low-key ambiance. Waiters were helpful and friendly. Of particular note were the melon/buratta salad, the chicken liver mousse, the halibut and the Waygu beef. All in all it was a great meal at a great spot!
First time going, went in for brunch. DELICIOUS. The doughnuts, corned beef hash, breakfast sandwich on house made English muffin. The side of thick bacon, worth it. Wish I had more room, our dining neighbors had the morning buns and those looked terrific with dark chocolate. For beverage we had the mimosas bottle do it your way. It was a bottle of sparkling with both orange juice and blood orange-cucumber. Service was great. Definitely be going again.
My only complaint is the common theme of tables being to close together. I might as well be eating at a community table.
Wonderful evening. Enjoyed several of the new items on the menu. Tai Ricci was there to welcome as back and make sure everything was perfect. Thank you to the entire team.
Wonderful staff, atmosphere and food. Would fly back to SF just to eat there again. That enjoyable!!!!
We had dinner here for my first night to ever stay in San Francisco! I recommend the Puff Potatoes and Eggs and the steak. The ambiance was romantic but also inviting for friends/groups. It definitely set the bar for good eats, and it will be a place I will revisit!
Great date night restaurant. We had crudo, hummus, grilled bread, chicken roulade, and hamburger. Wine list was great.
We had a fantastic meal! Everyone was so thrilled with what they ordered all the way down to the creative desserts! We would definitely dine here again. Service was impeccable and even at a late hour.
Amazing friendly homey service alongside delish food and drinks. I reccomend the vegan risotto or the squid ink pasta! also be sure to have one (or 3) of the house made Pimms!
Fantastic food. Delightful atmosphere. Attentive service. Irresistible desserts!
Terrific ! We’ll be back again soon !
3-stars for the food, 0-stars got the service. I was so excited to try the food here, and don’t get me wrong the food is amazing, however we left with a very sour taste. Our server, when we saw her, treated us like we were inconveniencing here by being there. The food took forever, which I understand it was a busy night but not one person mentioned it not even “let me go check on your food”, including the manager who dropped off our main dish before our starters had even arrived. Our empty bottle and glasses of wine sat on our table for some time, we wanted to order another bottle but our server was no where to be found. This restaurant came so highly recommended I was disappointed leaving with the thought, not sure I would go back there.
Amazing food! I had the salad special and was brought their signature ceviche as a bonus beforehand. It was amazing, all plates had an excellent balance of simple flavours that were sophisticatedly combined on the plate. Best meal in a long time!
My fave little gem on Russian Hill. Amazing meal, and very kind, and genuine service.
They treated us like Gold! Dinner was delicious, all three in our party loved their choices and our shared appetizers and desserts were stellar!
