Cozy pub atmosphere, and the quality and variety of the food far surpasses typical pub fare!
Staff was great.. food was delicious... prices were reasonable!
We made reservations thru Yelp for 7:45. When we arrived at first they weren’t sure if the reservation was there and once they found it we were told we could wait 30 mins or go upstairs. We took a look at upstairs which did not have the same ambiance as the first floor. We took the 2nd floor and the room soon emptied as many were finishing their dinner. Reservations should be better managed at this restaurant so that those who reserve aren’t sent upstairs. Or make the upstairs more in line with downstairs ambiance - lighting was too bright too many TVs in a small room etc
A pleasant Saturday with a nice brunch in a historic Ashland, Ma. with a real history of intrigue. We hadn't been there in years, but it still is a very pleasant and intriguing historical Inn to enjoy lunch or dinner. It also has a so called spooky background which is part of its intrigue. The clam chowder and salad together were very nice, but to much food for me, but probably not for others...it is a historical spot with good food...Dave
Three of us had dinner -- one had a half roasted chicken (a little overdone, but okay), a burger with fries, and meatloaf. The many choices here meant everyone had a meal they enjoyed. Prices were reasonable, and they have a full bar. It was a little chilly, so we asked if they could light the nearby fireplace, and they did. All in all, good food with enjoyable company.
Eat the poutine! Best I've ever had outside of Montreal. All the food was excellent and I really enjoyed the cozy atmosphere.
We visited for a nieces birthday brunch. The waitress was lovely and very attentive. My only complaint was the corn beef hash, mostly all mashed potato very little flavor.
Was there last Saturday night w/ A reservation that was made 24 hours in advance. Asked for a table for four at 6:30 in a quiet area. Was given a hightop table next to the entrance of the kitchen, in the lounge, extremely loud, and constantly busy with waitstaff going in and out of the kitchen with food, very disappointed! To make it even more disappointing I was told that I could only have the table for an hour and a half, because in that corner of the lounge the band will be setting up.. in this space that we were actually sitting in at the hightop table!!
Would not go back, even though our waitress was great, very helpful and very apologetic when we were asked to move at the end of the hour and a half.
We eat at Stone's at least twice a month. This time we had a reservation in the dining room and the service was awful. It took over an hour to bring us a salad and hamburger. Food is always consistent, but we normally like to eat in the bar and probably will next time as well.
Service was slow, we were waiting to be seated - had a reservation- stuck us next to a huge party which was extremely noisy and near the exit where people kept holding the door open- was freezing. Food took forever to arrive.
With a few exceptions the food was excellent. My husband raved about the sirloin steak and turtle cheesecake. Chicken and meatloaf very good. Would like to see more veggies. We sat next to an extremely loud table and it was hard to talk to each other. We definitely will come back just not on a busy Friday night.
Nice neighborhood place. We like going there, best fish and chips, and they have other menu items that are very good.
Reservations are recommended since they do get full
Wonderful and festive celebrating St. Patrick’s Day at John Stone’s! Food was excellent and Guinness was flowing!
We went for the first time St. Patrick's day. We were prepared for a long wait and a hectic kitchen but we were seated 7 minutes after our reservation and our server Buddy was fantastic. Food was amazing - kudos to the kitchen being so busy and turning out perfect plates - cooked as requested. We will be back!
Have been to Stone's many times but we were celebrating St. Patrick's Day on this occasion. The corned beef and cabbage was delicious as was my husband's comfort dinner of meatloaf. Great bar too!
Excellent as usual. A quite busy (on St. Patrick's Day) but they did not miss a beat on service or food quality. I had the NY Sirloin with two veg sides that was perfect for Paleo. I almost bought another to take home for Sunday dinner it was so delish. My Irish other half had the Lamb Shepherds Pie which was great except it had to be sent back to have the potato top browned, as that is the proper way to serve the dish. Always a pleasure to dine here.
We went on St Patrick’s Day and even though the place was packed, we were seated within 10 minutes of our reservation. I think that is very good.
The appetizers were so plentiful and the drinks terrific..we got so full that we moved on to dessert..wonderful carrot cake..
Our waitress and all staff were festive and very accommodating...even though it really was so busy.
I definitely will go back.
Fun for St Patrick’s Day!
Great spot! Happy we found it.
Been here a lot and keep coming back for the food but the service left a lot to be desired this time. Server made a couple of appearance but we waited a long time. Appetizers were delivered by someone else and entrees arrived before we finished the apps
Wonderful waitress, good food
My husband and I dined here fairly early on a Wednesday night. We were seated in a very cozy room with two burning fireplaces. It was all very pleasant until all the children showed up. We dined here before and saw lots of kids, but didn’t think much of it. Parents did their best, but toddlers will be toddlers and three of these youngsters just were not happy...at all. I get it. I’ve been there and done that. And so our food came, and it was great. Steak was cooked to perfection and well seasoned. Pork chop was juicy and flavorful. Did we want another glass of wine or coffee and dessert? No, we wanted out. This is not a place to come for a quiet(ish) dinner out, a date or if you expect to have a conversation with friends and actually hear them over the temper tantrums. This is a great local place to come for young families who need a break from cooking on a weeknight. We’ll be back but perhaps we’ll make our reservations a bit later in the evening.
As always Stone's was a fun evening. The food is always good, their is an interesting wine list and our server, who has waited on us a number of times, is terrific. On Saturday night the musical entertainment started at 8:00 P.M. and made conversation difficult even though we were in the dining room.
This was our second trip here ans we thought it was excellent. We definitely will return.
Vegetarian option of veggie shepherds pie was not good. Gravy on it tasted like meat gravy. Menu said it came with sides. Waitress said it came with none. Basically it was a gravy with a few vegetables. I didn't get the shepherds pie name. My dinner companion said his food was just okay. Beer selection was very good.
Food and service was very good. I would recommend the burger, fish & chips as well as the shrimp with garlic toast.
Very good food, service and value. Cozy setting. We'll definitely be back !
Fantastic waitstaff: attentive, knowledgeable, personable and just the right amount of attention!
We had to wait about one half hour to be downstairs, but it was worth it. Upstairs is more of a bar scene -- very crowded and noisy.
Classic old time public house with history. Comfort food done well. Fairly loud and not if you are in a hurry, but a great place to gather with friends.
For whatever reason they didn't have our reservation when we arrived. Ended up sitting upstairs which has less ambiance. Food was delicious but took long time. My husband ended up cancelling dessert as he didn't wish to wait anymore.
This is our go to restaurant and it never disappoints. Great food, very good service.
I am an old customer, but was somewhat disappointed with the flavor and presentation of my dish on this day. The drinks were late and served after the meal was presented to us. We had a special old friend from Europe and we wanted to enjoy dinner together. The place was not busy at all, and a good 40% of the items on the menu were not available. Please make sure the quality, presentation, service does not go down. It is not easy to find a good place like this one in the neighborhood. I hope this was a one time experience.
Husband and I went for brunch on a cold, rainy Sunday. We were thrilled when we were seated in the bar area at a table next to the fireplace. It was so nice and warm! We both had yummy Bloody Mary's although it was missing celery. I had an omelette which was great and my husband had a corned beef sandwich which he raved about. Great beer selection as well as other craft cocktails. There was a guitar player singing tunes which we loved. We stayed longer than planned due to the atmosphere. Will be back.
The food was terrific. It always is. Stone's is my default "let's go out" place, whether just my partner and me, or with local friends. On a prior visit, a well-traveled friend declared their shepherd's pie the best she'd ever had.
The condensed version of my most recent trip was that two of our four orders were fouled up, along with a few other bumps in the road. We still left a good tip, and will certainly go back, but this was an unexpected disappointment. I'm going to chalk it up to a bad night, and hope it turns out to be an anomaly.
Stones Public house has always been one of the coziest places that my husband i go when its really cold outside. We have three children and when they were young we came to the restaurant on special occasions like New Years Eve, or Valentine’s Day, but now we visit almost weekly. We have gone to the Tuesday Trivia night and that was a great dinner with trivia fun challenging our brain while simultaneously entertaining our college aged niece who is local while in school. The craft beer selection keeps my husband coming back as well as the wings and fries that can’t be beat. I really appreciate the gluten free options, being sensitive to gluten, the risotto is a great option, along with the brined half chicken. The fruit sangria in the summer and the outdoor terrace are so great too and keep our mind off missing the cozy fireplaces!! Our biggest favorite is the fireplaces throughout the restaurant and the great waitstaff and hostesses. Its one of our all time favorite places to eat locally for these many reasons, oh i can’t forget the apple crisp dessert which is delicious!
We don't live too far away, but hadn't been there in a while. A lot of history, and food was wonderful as was the service and value ! we'll be back soon !
Limited menu because of renovations. Disappointed special birthday - 30th 7 items were not offered. Would of like to of known that as I would of gone somewhere else for dinner.
The food is delicious there usually!
The food was really good. The filet size was a little underwhelming for the price. But very tasty and cooked perfect. We sat at the bar and the bar tender was very friendly, but not very attentive. In fact we ordered 2 filets and he only put us in for 1, so we split it instead of waiting for my wifes dish to come out. So we split a small filet. We ordered a bottle of wine which was a good tasting wine for the cost. The atmosphere is the best around! Not too many places with cozy fires these days. We will come back.
