Stone's Cove KitBar - Owings Mills - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
Son was in town from Michigan coaching for a college lacrosse tourney. Met my sister, brother in law, and nephew there since we don't see my son often. Great service - they use the team model. We were seated at one of the unique bar tables and enjoyed watching the food prep. Place was moderately busy (early Saturday evening) but the noise level was low enough for normal conversation. We had fish taco's, mushroom flat bread, cuban sandwich, and meatloaf cupcakes. Everything was fantastic, especially the meatloaf. Wine pours seemed a bit light. Would have preferred to buy bottles.
We needed a not-to-expensive place to eat with good food before a lacrosse game. We arrived, told the host we had one extra guest (total 3) and it was no problem. We were seated immediately (on a Friday at 6:30 PM) and served immediately. Food was excellent! We split a cobb salad (asked for no onions and they gladly obliged), portabello flatbread pizza was excellent, fish tacos and a sandwich - all great food, quick and friendly service. Much better than chain restaurant alternatives.
Unfortunately a really bad nite for the kitchen. We had to ask for drinks after 30 minutes. None were offered. Waitress asked us if we wanted water and we said bubbles but she brought regular. Asked us if we would like to change and never came back. Had another waiter serve us apps which took over 30 minutes to come out. In meantime he felt bad for us and got us bread and oil. Food finally came iut but we ate too much oil bread and didn't get main course. Manager spoke to us 3 times and apologized. I would try again though.
Restaurant was fully staffed but everyone looked like they had no idea what they were doing. Kitchen area was messy and unkempt, we were asked by 3 servers if we had our order taken yet after we ordered. Never had drinks refilled, salad was served without dressing. Restaurant ran out of 1 dessert and it wasn't even 7:30pm yet. Dessert we ordered was served in a scalding hot dish but server didn't warn us so one of us had a minor burn from touching the bowl. Wouldn't go back.
This was perhaps one of the worst meals I have ever had! The value of what we where charged vs. what we received was thievery. Our appetizer was so spicy, the mashed potatoes literally had grease pooling all over the top, the steaks my husband and I ordered where the worst! My husband ordered the sirloin. The shape and size of his steak was mind boggling. For $17.00 he received a sirloin that was the size and shape of a small sweet potato. The steak was an odd shape with pointy ends. It was very rubbery. It was aside I sloppy pile of greasy grits. My flank steak was were I draw the line and say I was robbed. For $17.00 I received 5 THIN slices of steak. More like what you would get with fajitas. I bet I didn't get but 3 ozs or less of steak. The steak slices we thin and about 3" long. That was lined on top of "roasted vegetables". MY vegetables were RAW! They weren't roasted or even cooked. They were still cold! They had a very sloppy sauce on them. I sent them back and had another plate of vegetables delivered that were pan fried. We left hungry! My husband and I drove to Chick Fil A and grabbed a snack. Left disappointed, feeling financially robbed and still hungry ....$60.00 later
Overpriced for what was served (a few slices of meat is not a steak!) and food was pretty mediocre. The flat bread was not great. I think this place is overrated on-line-- also weird seating structure of the restaurant made it hard to get server's attention. Won't go back--it was pretty empty too. Might be good for a bar but I think this place is destined to fail with its current offerings.
Stone's Cove, here's your problem - your tipping structure (all on duty share the pool) means your good staff will ALWAYS leave. You can see I'm an actual costumer - my OT "elite" or whatever it is has been earned the past two years solely on reservations with you. The service has gone downhill. The food is still quite good, but I cook really well. If I'm coming to a restaurant, I'm looking for good service. That I've been comped two checks in the past four months should tell you something, considering I'd been comped only one prior since you've been open.
I've been to Stone's Cove two other times right when it first opened and really enjoyed the experience. Tonight was very different. I thought it was odd that the restaurant was so empty upon arrival! During our previous visits, we always had to wait with tables being packed! It was weird to see a restaurant so empty on a Saturday at 7pm, but after our experience I understand why. The experience has gone down hill since opening and I would be surprised if this place survived another year!
Where do I start? The beers on tap were so flat that two folks in our party ended up having to switch to bottles. I ordered two martinis and watched as our server spilled most of it down my glass as he carried it over.
The worst part was that we went 45 minutes without seeing our server. We finished our meal without drink refills and had to flag down another staff member to get our check. During that time, he confirmed our server had left - no one else ever picked us up after he left which would explain why we sat unserviceable for 45 mins! For a bill of $177, you'd think we would have received better service. Not worth the $$ or the time... with Foundry Row open, you have better options now!
