Stonehill Tavern, a Michael Mina Restaurant - Monarch Beach Resort Ratings and Reviews
I had Thanksgiving dinner at Stonehill Tavern. The evening started well. My server was very friendly and recommended a great cocktail to start the night. Since it was a holiday, there was a fixed menu. I informed the restaurant in advance that I am a pescatarian. I chose the caviar starter and mushroom risotto for the first two courses, which was followed by a traditional Thanksgiving main entree and desserts. I also ordered the wine pairing.
The wine pairing for the first course came early and the plate arrived soon after I received my cocktail, but since it was a cold dish, I didn’t mind. The caviar starter was very good, though the person who poured the wine didn’t provide any explanation other than what was on the label. Once I finished the first course, I waiting around 20 minutes for the risotto, which arrived less than lukewarm. I also waited another 10 minutes for my second wine, which the sommelier poured. There was no sign of my original server. I told the sommelier that my dish was cold and asked her if I could also get some bread. She brought back my second course after a few minutes, piping hot, and graciously comped my wine pairing.
I finally got bread and finished my risotto, which was better than a neighborhood Italian restaurant, but disappointing for a Mina restaurant. For the main course, I got salmon instead of turkey and ordered only two of the sides that would normally be shared for larger tables. When the dish came out, it contained spoonfuls of all the sides and a tiny piece of dry salmon. The brussel sprouts and kale (the two I had ordered) were tasty, but the rest were average at best. My server reappeared just before the main course was delivered, but only to change my wine glass. Dessert came on a cart , so I picked the pecan and apple pies, which were good. My server brought the check.
I heard another server say that Stonehill was closing soon to be re-opened as Bourbon Steak. Maybe that explains the disappointing experience.
My wife and I cane here for a much needed date night. The ambiance was relaxing and romantic. The food was amazing! Everything is expensive here but well worth the price! My wife had the filet and I had the NY strip. Both were incredible. We definitely will come back and highly suggest trying this place for a special occasion or just a romantic date night.
One of the best dinners, service and food we have had in years! Lyle was our waiter and I would ask to be seated at his table! He was excited and knowledgeable about every part of the menu. We were always made to feel welcomed and special from the glass of Champagne, to the taster soup from the chef, and the two wrapped coffee cakes for our morning coffee to reminisce fondly about our amazing dinner the night before. It worked we loved our start to the morning! The two tiny cones with a taste of ice cream was the final amazing touch!!
We can’t express enough how amazing each plate of food from the chef tasted! We even have to give credit to the bartender for both the mixed alcohol and mixed non-alcohol drinks.
Can’t wait for another special occasion and excuse to revisit our fantastic experience!!!!
I never write reviews but I could not be happier to write a review for Stonehill Tavern!
Stonehill Tavern is a very special restaurant. They know that ambience, service, and great food makes for a great experience. I rarely comment, but our experience was so complete I feel it important to share. This is a fabulous restaurant for a special occasion. Kudos to the very attentive staff.
Went for a birthday celebration for a good friend. It was nice and quiet in the restaurant which is a great perk on a Saturday night. The corkage fee was very inexpensive and they allowed us to bring our own ice cream cake. I really appreciated this because it’s my friend’s absolute favorite cake and it made him very happy. Unfortunately the dinner was rich and every dish was overly salted. Like, way overly salted. It made all the many sides we ordered useless. They all tasted the same - of salt. I ordered the lobster pot pie. It was ok. Except they put the flaky pastry pie part of the pot pie UNDER the sherry pie filling. It was a beautiful display but killed the puff in puff pastry. I probably won’t return. Then upon my departure I gave the valet ticket to the valet guy who opened the front door but apparently that isn’t something he does. You can pay hundreds of dollars per person for dinner but it’s unreasonable to ask valet to get your car.
Stonehill doesn't disappoint, except when we learned it is planned to close and reopen as Bourbon Steak. The prix fixe menu is the way to go. Each course is unique and well prepared. Cocktails were great, lots of egg whites if you're not into that, beware. Definitely visit before it closes, it is worth it.
We had a fabulous experience at Stonehill Tavern. The staff was excellent from hostess to servers. Every bite was mouthwatering and we savored each one of them. I had the mushroom gnocchi for my appetizer and it was simply amazing--didn't want to share a bit of it! My husband enjoyed the Spanish squid and said it was exceptional. We both had fish for our entrees, sea bass and branzino. Incredible. Also, best Cosmo ever. The view overlooking the resort and ocean was spectacular as the sun dropped. 5 stars all around.
The food was wonderful and the restaurant was lovely, however, the service was lacking for a restaurant of this caliber. Perhaps we came on an off night, but the atmosphere was very cold and we were constantly wondering where our servers were at. Perhaps our expectations were different than the restaurant's, but we left slightly disappointed.
Coming to the Stonehill Tavern was never to be expected to be this good.

We had a fabulous time at Stonehill Tavern. We were celebrating a special occasion and the food was excellent. The entire service team was flawless as well, we were really felt cared for and all 6 people in our party enjoyed their meals. A great place to celebrate a special occasion or to treat yourself!
The premier restaurant in this resort. The service is excellent and the food is amazing. This resort is on par with the upper tier resorts in the area: Ritz-Carlton and Montage. Formerly the St. Regis, this resort (and restaurant) have really 'upped their game'. In addition to the excellent restaurant, the bar at Stonewall Tavern is excellent - along with a great bartender. I look forward to being back many times.
Overall it's a nice experience. The food is definitely expertly crafted. Aside from our specific server, the rest of the staff was amazing. Friendly and knowledgeable. Unfortunately our server missed some big ones...repeatedly, starting with giving us water with ice when we specifically asked for no ice. Even IHOP gets this one right...To actually delivering the wrong dessert!!! And the guy was clearly trying to get out of there. Oh well. I'd try the place again for sure.
Had a good experience and enjoyed the tasting menu. Chef even allowed us to change the main course-which was very kind. Delicious food. Bread and spread were amazing. Sommelier did a great job with the wine pairings. Very creative choices that blended nicely. Restaurant is beautiful but very loud. Service was very good. View-if you can see it-is perfect! Nice night.
This restaurant and another two restaurants in OC are on my list of must try. I want to go here for awhile but somehow I managed to skip it all the time :(, so over this long weekend I finally booked and had dinner there with my hubby. I had tried other Michael Mina's restaurants before, and this one was as good as others. The name throw me off at first, but when I saw a Michael Mina's restaurant; I knew it will be good. The overall experience was excellent. My husband loves the bread and butter that they served. If I remember it correctly, it had a bit of honey already mixed with the butter. The combination tasted so well together. I had sea bass and octopus, my husband had lobster pot pie plus the mushroom. Everything was delicious. Customer service is excellent. Ambience and location are exactly what and where Michael Mina's restaurant should be. Cocktail is good and expensive just like other LA restaurants. I was very impress that Michale Mina decides to open up another location and choose OC as his destination. I love fine dining and normally go to LA to try every month for fine dining experiences. Hopefully more restaurants of this scale are opening up soon in the future.
This was our first night of a week's stay at the Monarch. The setting was quiet and comfortable in a booth. Lots of attention from servers as it was not very busy. Food was fantastic!
We returned on the last night of our stay - a Friday. Much busier and louder. We were seated in the midst of the bustle. Would have preferred the deck or booth but were not given the option although we noticed shortly that there was available seating outside. As a couple this would have been preferred :)
We enjoyed our cocktails, the Old Fashion was amazing, and the gnocchi appetizer was delicious. My wife ordered the sea bass and I ordered Michaels Lobsters pot pie. My wife enjoyed her meal but the lobster was overlooked and tough in my dish. This was very disappointing when the other flavors of the dish were excellent. Hopefully this was an exception because the $75.00 market price for lobster is hard to justify when poorly executed.
The service is impecable.
My meal was awesome, the trout. So was my son's the sea bass. The lobster pot pie did not live up to its hype. Both of the ladies had this and were not happy. I did not try it based on their reviews.
We did close out with a stellar desert!
The food was fresh. The scenery was spectacular. I would eat there for that alone. However my meal was a 10! I am just a bit salty that my wife and son's girl did not enjoy the meal like I did. For that reason only I give it a 4.
Maybe next time the lobster pot pie lives up to the hype.
