The Jeans came to Dutchess County, NY where they discovered The Stissing House, an historic 1782 tavern, after an almost 20-year run at their New York City restaurant Provence. One of America’s oldest and longest-operating restaurants, The Stissing House features a wood-burning oven and grill sizzling with Michel’s Provençal-inspired cuisine. With a more sophisticated décor but period details intact, The Stissing House has become a landmark culinary destination. The food: simple, delicious, robust and compelling Provençal cuisine. In every meal: seasonal, locally-sourced, organic grass-fed beef, poultry and vegetables. The vintage tavern room features a special cocktail menu drawing locals and visitors alike to eat, drink and socialize at the bar or the tables. Available for private parties as well.
So charming and the service was phenomenal. The only restaurant I have found around here that carries Casamigos tequila. Food was seasonal - the morel and asparagus fettuccine was divine! And the gem salad with a shallot vinaigrette and sliced radishes tasted as if it was plucked from a garden that day. I can’t wait to return! Five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I love the Stissing House. The chef is truly outstanding, the place is very warm and attractive wherever you are seated. Cocktails are generous. Staff is always pleasant and attentive. The last time I was there the food was wonderful but the menu was limited because it was a holiday and the prices are rather steep. However, I feel it is well worth it.
As in the past, Chef Michel Jean created a superb dinner for our foursome.
Always a treat
We ate in the bar, my favorite room. The service was attentive but not obtrusive. The cocktails made of local bourbon were superb. We shared an appetizer of scrumptious fried wild mushrooms followed be delicious and creative entrees. Just enough room for us to share a rich dark chocolate terrine. Yum!
Charming, delicious food, lovely ambience, it is always a delight to dine at Stissing House
Great food and service. Ambiance made it warm Nd comfortable.
Stissing House is a gem in Northern Dutchess, a true destination restaurant in Pine Plains. The food and service are always a beautiful thing.

Delicious food in a cozy atmosphere. We love dining here!
Amazing experience! The chef/owner came out for a visit and that was very special. Food was incredible and we can’t wait to return.
The food is always good here. The moules frites are outstanding and there are always wonderful specials to choose from in addition to the regular menu. Their specialty cocktails are creative and delicious. All this in a beautiful historic building with friendly and attentive service.
Excellent meal, as always! Stissing House is a favorite, and we are so lucky to have it in Pine Plains.
We ate at the bar because we wanted to be in the main dining room. Met some interesting folks and bartender was awesome! My only suggestion is to eat in main room. We were in a side room and the other tables were at end of their dinner and we would have been eating alone. Will definitely go back and eat at the bar again too!
I have been to the Stissing House several times. This time my food came out cold, all of it, and overcooked and tasteless. My husband's dinner was overcooked. I don't like to complain so I quietly shared my experience with the wait staff. I did not send it back. Just ate half of it. The waitress was very apologetic. The chef came out and was irritated. Really!! I am not the problem, dear chef. your meal was underwhelming. I like the restaurant and the people there. But for a great chef every meal should be memorable for the right reasons.
All I have to say is I ordered the "Organic Poussin :: young chicken with garlic, lemon and natural jus" for $30 and what showed up on my plate was (2) pieces of barely seasoned chicken wings, an entire plate of fries, and an edamame / pea combination.
It belonged on the kids menu and not worth $30. That's a decently priced entree and for what I received that wasn't okay.
My husbands birthday. Delicious food and excellent service
The Stissing House was excellent. My wife and I went for Valentine's Day. They had a wonderful menu and the food was spectacular. I especially recommend their onion soup....worth the trip just for that!
Everything was delicious, the portion sizes were large and splitting the fried wild mushrooms made for the perfect appetizer. The service was great and they let us keep our copy of the special Valentine's day menu.
The chef is amazing
Very good cocktails and an amazing fried mushroom appetizer. Sadly, my wild boar entree was a bit dry and uninspired with boring penne on the side. Still recommend this place. Lovely atmosphere and previous experience has been very good.
This is a gorgeous spot and clearly a lot of love has gone into both the setting and the menu. We had oysters which were some of the freshest we've ever tasted, as well as beef short ribs and a Vietnamese style burger (in the hopes that something from the specials might represent the kitchen's experimentation). The short ribs were perfect - tasty, tender and beautifully presented. The Vietnamese burger was dry, tasteless, and piled with so many fries it seemed as though the burger was the side. It was literally like the two mains came from two different restaurants. The staff were friendly and the level of service was polished. We will probably be back again but will stick to the classics.
French Onion Soup was spectacular. Had the special fish of the night, Monkfish and wow. Was very delicious.
I can’t wait to go back and bring family and friends.
Great experience. Will def come back!
As always, food was excellent, service was very attentive and the place was splendid in its holiday decor. Only drawback was we were too stuffed for dessert.
Food is always delicious. The waitstaff know the menu and can make excellent wine suggestions.
The chef-owner adds to the ambience not only with his superior cooking but with his welcoming attitude.
I live 20 miles from the restaurant but the trip is well worth it. Never disappointed.
I'd recommend Stissing House to anyone who loves a great dining experience
Superb food & service in stylish rustic old inn/tavern setting.
An 18th century building restored beautifully. Servers were friendly and efficient in a very busy dining room. The Margherita pizza was delicious, as was the hanger steak. The fish was a bit bland for my tastes, but expertly prepared.
Foggy roads on a Sunday evening in the winter meant we pretty much had the place to ourselves; it is probably much more crowded other times of the year.
Food (short ribs for my companion and lamb burger for me) was great and server was very attentive and friendly. Not inexpensive, but we knew that going in. Looks like they have a lot of spaces for private functions.
Stissing House never disappoints! Food is great, service is polite and attentive and sitting next to the fireplace can't be beat!
Warm and comfortable, excellent, simple food.
Family in from SC.
Always delicious and creative menu.
Always a great meal; we always look forward to seasonal specials.
A truly wonderful meal, in a lovely setting, with very good service.
One of our favorite places great food atmosphere and people
Lovely meal in a historic place. Felt welcomed and taken care of the moment we walked in. Really nice family owned vibe.
Nice Brunch with my parents, first time in the area where I recently moved. Beautifully restored tavern, wide pine floors and great atmosphere there. FOOD and coffee excellent, I would recommend to anyone to visit this local gem.
Nice oak bar and great selection of drink offerings.
Delicious food in a comfortable setting. Great, personable service that was able to accommodate multiple food allergies.
