Steve & Cookie's By the Bay Ratings and Reviews
I usually dine in the oyster bar, but this past Sat we ate in the dining room. There were two major flaws. One, immediately after finishing our salads, our entrees arrived. This was unacceptable. Additionally, I had half my salmon leftover, and they took away for boxing to go. I asked for extra mustard sauce. There was no extra sauce in the box. The salmon was a little dry and overdone, and it needed the sauce. We live in AC, and have way too many restaurants to go to that we didn't need to be rushed through dinner in mid November. Service is everything and these two issues were service related.
Very nice meal. We ordered salads, appetizer, entree and dessert. The salads were very good. The eggplant rollatini was delicious. I had a fish special which was wonderful but I think I would rather have had rice, potato, etc as the side rather than lettuce. For dessert we got a sampler so we could try various things- all of which were good.
I went there on someone's recommendation expecting a fine dining experience. It is more like a high end Fridays atmosphere, the food was good, but not exceptional. When I spend $40 for a filet I expect it to come with something more than plain mashed potatoes, could have added anything for flavor but there was nothing other than salt. I actually woke up the next morning with my fingers swollen due to the salt content of the food. But any other flavors were absent, no garlic, no rosemary, no anything. On top of that we waited forever to just get bread, when our server did come by the table he disappeared as quickly as he came. It took me three attempts to get his attention to order a coctail. If you are looking for a highend bar experience this could be for you, but definitely not what I was expecting or hoping for.
We liked the restaurant atmosphere and the service very much. The salads were wedges which I liked but my girlfriend was a bit surprised at the size. The filet mignon was good (I have had better and I have had worse). She had the salmon which she said was very good. They had Heineken Light which not everyone has. They brought a fresh, ice cold glass with the very cold bottle each time, and that boosted by rating of what was already good service.
Never Disappoints! Steve and Cookies is one of my favorite restaurants by the shore. The food is consistently simple and fantastic although it is a bit pricey to visit regularly. The noise level gets a bit loud, mostly because people are enjoying themselves, so it's not offensively loud. I wish we lived closer so we could go more often!
This was the first time we had dinner at Steve and Cookies and we had a wonderful experience. We knew we were going to be a bit late for our 5:00 reservation and called to let them know. They were very accommodating and moved our reservation to 5:30. Our waiter was very pleasant and attentive. My husband had a bolonese pasta dish for his first course and I had lollipop lamb chops. We both enjoyed our choices very much. For dinner, I had a crab cake, which came with a type of slaw, and my husband had fillet mignon with a baked potato. Again, everything was cooked just as requested and was very good. I would have preferred a different accompaniment than the slaw, but it was tasty and went well with the crab. We had booked our reservation on Open Table and indicated it was our anniversary, and after dinner our waiter came out with a plate of sampler desserts with a candle and Happy Anniversary written on the plate in chocolate. It was such a nice surprise and added to the special occasion we were celebrating. After that, we still ordered a full size slice of the brownie pie to share, which was served warm, because we liked the sampler so much. I was disappointed that the blueberry pie was out of season because I had read other reviews that said it was delicious. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. It has a wonderful ambiance that is both casual and romantic, but it also feels like a fine restaurant. Another thing we liked was that many of the dishes offered a choice of small or large size. I was able to chose if I wanted one crab cake or two and my husband had a choice of a 5 oz. fillet mignon or an 8 oz. This is nice when you want to start with bread and end with enough room for dessert. It also made our dinner more affordable for fine dining. Our bill was approx. $127 before gratuity and that included one glass of wine and one cocktail. We would definitely return to Steve and Cookies for dinner in the future and to have that blueberry pie.
