About Stephen's on State
Stephen's on State originally opened their doors in June of 2003 under the name Stephen's Prime. Primarily a steak house, the restaurant operated for three years before the owners felt a change was necessary. They wanted to create a more casual setting and in August 2008 renovations began. The entire face of the restaurant was demolished and replaced with sliding french doors that open out to the street. Opening under the name Stephen's on State, the restaurant now offers outside cafe dining in addition to the ala carte lunch and dinner menu. Responding to the high volume of bar business, Stephen's once again renovated in August of 2008 and expanded into the adjacent building doubling the bar capacity and adding a new dance floor. With live entertainment Monday through Saturday, many people are coming to Stephen's to enjoy a full dining experience, dance, or maybe simply to enjoy an appetizer and cocktail from their extensive martini and wine list while listening to music.

Stephen's on State Ratings and Reviews
We’ve been there a few times and this was quickly becoming one of our favorite spots. Tonight, Valentine’s Day we went there and hit a few servicing problems. First, we weren’t told of any specials, then all the women customers were given a single rose except my wife, I had to request one, everyone around us received a basket of bread, we had to request 2x. It was very odd that the service to the other patrons was spot on, but we were ignored. The food was good, but service was very lacking.
We went to Stephan's on State to celebrate my daughters birthday. This happened to be Valentines week so we ordered off their special menu. the filet was perfect as was the mushrooms with lump crab meat risotto. Everyone was happy with their meals. Short ribs, scallops, chicken Stephan's all were great.
Spoke w. Hostess for reservation Saturday at 7PM. This is after happy hour and before night crowd on purpose! Told hostess of special occasion that we wanted to enjoy quiet meal prior to advertised DJ start at 830PM. Hostess failed to mention ENORMOUS party taking place in bar for Eagles celebration. When we arrived, the environment was already untenable. We literally could not hear each other speak. In hindsight, we should have vacated then. Waiter was friendly & apologized profusely for environment. Cheesesteak egg rolls delicious. Entrees (chk parm, seafood alfredo, tilapia) tasty but we ate only some of these expensive entrees before leaving! Given that the check was nearly 100$ but dining experience so unpleasant, I asked mgmt (kelly?) to reduce the cost of the meal. I explained that I had spoken earlier to a hostess who should have informed me of the looming celebration once I told her we were specifically arriving early to avoid noise. Sadly, Mgr refused to take any responsibility, instead blaming me for making a dinner reservation at 7 on a Saturday night. Disappointing. For the cost of responsibility, compassion and possibly an entree, she could have potentially had 4 repeat customers.
Service was great. Prime rib, crab cakes & scallops were delicious and perfectly cooked. Mashed potatoes weren’t the best, baked potato would’ve been a great option but not offered. Live acoustic music was a pleasant surprise and very enjoyable. Will definitely go back!
When we arrived on a Saturday night, the noise level was very high with what seemed like a local crowd, everyone at the bar seemed to know each other.
We were seated at the back of the restaurant at a 4 top which was great because I could sit closer to her. If I was seated across from my date, we would not have been able to hear each other.
Aside from that, our server was great and the food was excellent. We would definitely go back.
This was our first visit to Stephen's on State; we were there to hear a friend's band and decided to come early to have dinner. The menu looked great; however the food fell short of the descriptions. The flatbread was crunchy to the point of almost being burnt and while the toppings were tasty and flavors were good, but overall it was too greasy with oil was dripping off the top.. The bread was delicious as was the dipping oil. Unfortunately the oil was in a container that did not fit the bread board so oil dripped onto the table. The servers were nice about cleaning it up when asked.
My husband enjoyed the Veal Saltimbocca and said it was good but not great. I was disappointed in my salmon. It was slightly overcooked and the risotto was definitely overcooked and flavorless. The sauce and the accompanying shrimp were tasty, however with the tails on dripping with oil and sauce, it was challenging to eat without getting sauce or oil all over.
We tried the chocolate lava cake; this too was overcooked with the cake part clearly overdone.
Overall decent, but not great food. For the price, I expected a better meal
Our first time here~ Aside from the rude, grey haired man who walked up to the hostess stand looking annoyed, no greeting, holding his phone up to his face, barely mumbled a hello and dropped menus at a table and walked away.... it got better. Our waiter Ron was nice, not very attentive but we didn’t need anything after meal was served. Food was good. Fellini’s directly across the street would be my choice next time solely based on the cold welcome of our first impression in the door.
First time here... delicious food was nice and hot, although a tad pricey. Had a couple of rib eyes which were tender and flavorful and a veal dish and a chicken dish which were both very good as well. Service was prompt, attentive, and friendly (happily surprised us based on previous reviews we've read). A little noisy, but considering the Eagles were playing the divisional playoff, it was understandable and acceptable. A short walk to The Media Theatre after was convenient. Def would return.
We recently went to Stephens for my birthday dinner. It started as a reservation for 2 and 30 mins before the rest of the family wanted to go. Made a call and they were happy to accommodate us for 6 people. Have been there multiple times and the food is always excellent. A great place for us!
When I walked in the door I thought I was in a sports bar. The left of the restaurant is a bar with TV and patrons were hooting and hollering over a sports game. I requested to be seated as far away as possible but it wasn't far enough. Crazy for a relatively expensive dinner menu.
The food and service however were very good. Just can't imagine returning due to the incongruent atmosphere. Not sure what the management can be thinking to mix those two venues.
Ordered their rubbed steak medium rare. It was delicious. Problem was, it was lukewarm. I do not send food back to the kitchen as it leaves my dining partner in a quandary. Does he/she continue eating, or wait for my platter to return and meanwhile their food gets cold. I know the problem was in the kitchen as the steak potatoes were so hot, they burned my mouth. They cooked the steak and then had to wait for the potatoes. What a shame. My rating would have been much different without this screw up.
Had a Groupon for Stephen's on State. Went there before and it was good. Tried it again and not sure I will ever be back. Steak was burnt on the outside and medium in the middle. Medium is good, but I hate a burnt steak. They said that is how they do it. Terrible. I ordered steak fries and they gave me potatoe wedges. I complained about that and they said that is their steak fries.Again, just terrible. No compensation at all on a $100 bill. Be careful what you order there.
