About Stephen's on State
Stephen's on State originally opened their doors in June of 2003 under the name Stephen's Prime. Primarily a steak house, the restaurant operated for three years before the owners felt a change was necessary. They wanted to create a more casual setting and in August 2008 renovations began. The entire face of the restaurant was demolished and replaced with sliding french doors that open out to the street. Opening under the name Stephen's on State, the restaurant now offers outside cafe dining in addition to the ala carte lunch and dinner menu. Responding to the high volume of bar business, Stephen's once again renovated in August of 2008 and expanded into the adjacent building doubling the bar capacity and adding a new dance floor. With live entertainment Monday through Saturday, many people are coming to Stephen's to enjoy a full dining experience, dance, or maybe simply to enjoy an appetizer and cocktail from their extensive martini and wine list while listening to music.

Stephen's on State Ratings and Reviews
Our first time here~ Aside from the rude, grey haired man who walked up to the hostess stand looking annoyed, no greeting, holding his phone up to his face, barely mumbled a hello and dropped menus at a table and walked away.... it got better. Our waiter Ron was nice, not very attentive but we didn’t need anything after meal was served. Food was good. Fellini’s directly across the street would be my choice next time solely based on the cold welcome of our first impression in the door.
First time here... delicious food was nice and hot, although a tad pricey. Had a couple of rib eyes which were tender and flavorful and a veal dish and a chicken dish which were both very good as well. Service was prompt, attentive, and friendly (happily surprised us based on previous reviews we've read). A little noisy, but considering the Eagles were playing the divisional playoff, it was understandable and acceptable. A short walk to The Media Theatre after was convenient. Def would return.
We recently went to Stephens for my birthday dinner. It started as a reservation for 2 and 30 mins before the rest of the family wanted to go. Made a call and they were happy to accommodate us for 6 people. Have been there multiple times and the food is always excellent. A great place for us!
When I walked in the door I thought I was in a sports bar. The left of the restaurant is a bar with TV and patrons were hooting and hollering over a sports game. I requested to be seated as far away as possible but it wasn't far enough. Crazy for a relatively expensive dinner menu.
The food and service however were very good. Just can't imagine returning due to the incongruent atmosphere. Not sure what the management can be thinking to mix those two venues.
Ordered their rubbed steak medium rare. It was delicious. Problem was, it was lukewarm. I do not send food back to the kitchen as it leaves my dining partner in a quandary. Does he/she continue eating, or wait for my platter to return and meanwhile their food gets cold. I know the problem was in the kitchen as the steak potatoes were so hot, they burned my mouth. They cooked the steak and then had to wait for the potatoes. What a shame. My rating would have been much different without this screw up.
Had a Groupon for Stephen's on State. Went there before and it was good. Tried it again and not sure I will ever be back. Steak was burnt on the outside and medium in the middle. Medium is good, but I hate a burnt steak. They said that is how they do it. Terrible. I ordered steak fries and they gave me potatoe wedges. I complained about that and they said that is their steak fries.Again, just terrible. No compensation at all on a $100 bill. Be careful what you order there.
I really wanted to love this place. The service was great, loved the atmosphere but the food was just ok. The calamari was soggy, not crispy. The wedge salad had very little bacon and tomato and was just thrown together. The special that I received was drowning in sauce. The chicken Parm that my husband ate was just ok. The banana dessert however was outstanding!!!!
I was very pleased with the service and the food, however, I asked for a dessert with a candle when I booked the reservation under “Special Instructions” and my son did not receive it. I didn’t mention it because I wanted it to be a surprised. Also, the host was annoyed when I asked to have a different table since he sat us right near the kitchen.
Food was great, Debbie, our waitress was very attentive and personable but the NOISE was intrusive to conversation. The band was SO LOUD! It was unnecessary to blast the music as they did. Stephen's is not a large facility so turning the volume way down would still allow people to hear them without having to shout or repeat themselves in conversation.
This was our first visit to this restaurant. We thoroughly enjoyed the food. We had a reservation and were seated promptly. A little disappointed in our service. The young man was knowledgeable of the specials and explained them from memory. As the evening went on he was less attentive and out of sight. The venue is certainly on the noisy side. We were not in the main bar area but in the dining room. I would not recommend this venue if you are looking for a quiet dinner. Overall we did enjoy it and would likely return in the future.
Several reasons to not recommend:
1. No bread offered (all other tables had bread)
2. My wife didn't like her cosmo
3. Asked for asparagus as substitute on my steak order, which was accepted; still received green beans
4. Bus staff didn't clear appetizer plates until after main course
5. Wife's short ribs were fatty
I had heard great things, so was excited to have anniversary dinner here but was VERY disappointed. I would not recommend this to friends.
FOOD: The food all sounded good, but nothing came out correctly (except my Caesar salad). The salmon was overcooked and the waiter even admitted he thought it looked that way when it came out! My "medium rare" steak was medium in 1 small section but black/well everywhere else. It is a shame, because the spice/flavor was good. I would have re-ordered, but it took 30-40 minutes to get them in the first place, so wasn't going to wait longer . The pierogies appetizer was really oily. We were given dessert on the house because of the overcooked entrees... neither dessert came out hot. If you were wondering, lukewarm lava cake is not good.
SERVICE: Our server was very nice, but extremely slow. He had only 1 other table, and they were not understaffed, so this surprised me. It took 20 minutes before we ordered appetizers, and it took nearly 40 after we ordered entrees to get them. He didn't come by our table again for nearly 15 minutes to check how the food was... obviously I couldn't send it back and wait another 30 minutes. He also admitted things did not come out correctly, but didn't offer to bring them back or make a new prep. He also didn't seemed surprised that we were not happy (2 other tables had to send food back too while we were there).
AMBIANCE: I don't care much about decor - but we walked in and it reminded me of McKenzie's (West Chester area), not a steakhouse. It was not noisy or anything, but just not what I expected from a highly recommended restaurant.
OVERALL: I don't know if it was the sunday night kitchen crew, or the server, or what... but I won't be coming back.
Have eaten here a number of times. The dressing in the ice berg wedge was not good. Watery with no flavor. Crumpled blue cheese...nope. Perogie appetizer also lacked flavor. Not good at all.
Rib Eye steak was excellent. Had the special that evening with garlic butter on top. Very good!
But one star off for the poor beginnings.
