Stella Ratings and Reviews
The food is always great at Stella and this wasn’t an exception. My only complaint is around the seating. I took my girlfriend here for her birthday (noted it in the reservation) because it’s an easy fave close to home. They sat us next to a group holiday party in the middle of the dining room, also right near a busy walkway.
I’ve been here many times before so I’m used to the close quarters. Just would have expected a little bit of a better seat on a special night. We had people walking by, bumping the table and the bussing staff were hanging over our space while clearing other parties tables. Just wouldn’t have taken much to read the reservation and place us in a better location on the floor.
My sister and I took our 82 year old mother on a Friday night. The staff was extremely accommodating to our mother's limited mobility, coming outside on a very cold night to help us assist her into the restaurant and see us to our table. The service was attentive and the food excellent. The manager stopped at our table several times to make sure we were happy with our dining experience and if we needed more than was being offered.
The restaurant was very busy yet we felt like we were the only customers in Stella.
Stella offers superb food and drink, a warm, sophisticated atmosphere with a staff that is ready to please. You can't go wrong choosing Stella as a dining destination.
Our first time at Stella won't be our last. They had our table ready right on time, on a very busy Friday. The service was incredibly attentive, and our waiter was knowledgeable about the wine list. Everything we ate was delicious. We were delighted to have such an outstanding meal.
Overall, we had a lovely experience at Stella. My daughter loved her short rib dish, my gnocci was delicious. My husband, however, said that his swordfish didn't taste super fresh, but still managed to eat the whole dish! Hand crafted cocktails were delicious. Our server is a grad student and was efficient and pleasant. We will return! We have heard amazing reviews about their brunch.
Stella is one of my favorite restaurants and I'm a frequent diner with friends, family, and my husband (I even got engaged at the restaurant awhile back) However, the service on Saturday night was AWFUL. We had reservations at 8:15 and didn't get seated until close to 8:50 (no apology provided). Our server didn't share the specials until I prompted her, she barely checked on us, the service took FOREVER. You actually lost service because we didn't order more drinks because it took her our whole dinner to get us another glass of wine (it came after we finished even though we ordered before). We also didn't order dessert because of the lack of attention and care. I hope this was just an off night for you (because I've always been a huge fan) but I was pretty disappointed with the service.
I have always loved Stella but hadn’t been in awhile. The food is excellent and the atmosphere is vibrant. It’s great for special occasions and for grabbing a bite in the neighborhood. I am mostly vegetarian but will eat seafood and there were options on both counts. Stella is terrific!
I hadn't been to Stella in a while and I thought it was as good as ever. Warm, friendly--but not overly so--service. Lively atmosphere. Delicious food. My guest had the artichoke pizza. It was wonderful, a very generous portion and every bite was delicious. I had the short ribs with pappardelle and they were outstanding--perfectly cooked to fork tender; delicious sauce; al dente pasta. The wine list is reasonably priced with a good selection of wines by the glass. This is a great neighborhood place.
Main dining room was freezing.
I started with the mussels - they were fantastic.
Wife started with the artichoke - were good, but she expected them to be lightly battered, not to be as heavily laden as a corndog at the Mississippi state fair. The sauce earned rave reviews, however.
I had the braised short ribs - didn't know how the meat/cream sauce combo would go, but it was DELICIOUS. Short ribs were cooked perfectly.
Wife had the salmon - prepared well, well accompanied.
We go to Stella's because we know the food is always good here. The service could be better in that we weren't offered more bread or coffee at the end of the meal. Also, for a restaurant of this level of dining, serving cream in plastic little individual containers is so tacky. Can't they at least put a little in a pitcher? That surprised me more than anything.
The service was off the charts bad and ruined the evening actually. Drinks took forever, meals came out one at a time with 2-3 min in between and lastly our credits cards returned to us with nothing to sign and was tempted to just leave but we had to track down our idiot waiter who left the slips near the register. DONT GO
I've lived in the south end for 13 years and Stella used to be one of my go-to spots. I died over the bolognese and fresh focaccia bread. I don't know whether there's a different chef or what but for the last couple years it's not been the same. The bolognese sauce used to be a bit more pink...have some cream to it. Now it just tastes plain/average. And the focaccia bread seems to always be stale. So I stopped going. This time I had a business meeting right nearby so I decided to give it another shot. Again, my meal was just as described and disappointing. Also, the first server we had couldn't speak intelligible english. He mentioned one special (I couldn't understand what it was) and interrupted us 4 times within the first 10 minutes to take our dinner order. Thankfully for some reason, he was relieved by someone else who gave us spectacular service and told us about the specials (there were 4, not one as our previous server led us to believe). The pros: They make great drinks, have a nice ambiance and you can get half orders of the pasta. It's a perfectly fine restaurant, but it's lost something. If someone asked me for a reco in the south end, I might mention it with caveats but it would not be top on my list.
great cocktails and the bolognese was delicious. service was a little off--hostess asked if we would like to sit outside & we said yes, then she said actually there are no outside tables available, which we didn't mind it was just odd to offer and the rescind. the server was good overall but started to clear plates while my friend was still finishing her food, which was odd as the restaurant was only half full.
